Pam and Roger Experience Pedal to the Metal Last year Roger bought a new Corvette Z06, replacing a well-loved 2009 Z06. Shiny Admiral Blue with a Blade Silver stripe and red hash marks, the new wheels are living up to their reputation as a fast ride with style to spare. The car features a performance busting 650 horsepower supercharged V8, a big step up from the 505-horsepower previous version. The seven manual speeds put the power to the pavement. Stepping on the gas takes it from 0 to 60 in 2.7 seconds with neck-snapping acceleration. Amazingly this Corvette outperforms Ferrari’s and Lamborghinis. What better way to really get to know the car and how to drive it to the limit than to take it to the track. Well maybe not our car to the track, but one better – take a Ron Fellows Corvette to the track and get coached to make the most of it. It turns out GM likes this idea too and recommends the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School at Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club in Pahrump, Nevada. About an hour west of Las Vegas, on the road to Death Valley, the resort is like a golf resort for race car junkies, with lots of garages to keep member’s cars, comfortable accommodations in condos with full kitchens, a great club house, and three tracks including a big 2.2 mile with 10 tricky turns. They like to say members are perfecting their drive, just not golf balls. It doesn’t hurt that Canadian driver Ron Fellows, from Mississauga, the winningest charter member of Corvette Racing, endorses the program. The program is a balance of classroom time, exercises in “the Paddock”, and laps around the track, each track session at higher speed as the drivers gain knowledge and confidence. Expert instructors, each of whom have a long history of racing, driving and teaching, lead classes, take groups of three or four drivers through their paces doing figure eight’s and quick stops in the paddock, and on laps. Classes focus on individual aspects of the car and racing – tires, steering, traction, electronic controls, and more importantly how to balance the car, when to brake, start turning, and start accelerating in each turn. Surprisingly there are eight individual steps to follow to correctly turn each corner. The first venture out onto the track the drivers are like tourists, taking in the shape, trying out turning at the turning cone, concentrating on the apex cone to be sure to be in the correct position on the track, at the correct speed, to maximize speed coming out of the turn. The first laps no shifts are made, in the automatics or standard transmission cars. You get to drive exactly the model you own so everything you learn applies when you get back to your own car. There is a lot to pay attention to, and concentration is at the max. With each successive track session speeds climb, until the spouses watching from the bridge are amazed by the sound of the engine and the sound of the wind as the cars pass under the finish line. Pam got to ride along on three track sessions, each one faster than the last, with the instructor coaching each driver behind him, watching the track, talking on the track radio, shifting gears, and perfectly executing all of the eight steps to turn every time. What a rush! A visit to Las Vegas would not be complete without a couple of first class shows. This trip included the Michael Jackson One show put on by Cirque de Soleil at Mandalay Bay, and a David Copperfield show in his own theatre in the MGA Grand. Both were outstanding, and the Titanic exhibition at the Luxor and the aquarium were amazing too. Vegas Rat Rods has an outstanding display at the Welder Up showroom, Counts Customs has some great rides, and the Carroll Shelby Museum offers the history of the Mustang Cobra, with some beautiful cars to enjoy. The Las Vegas area is full of natural wonders, besides the casinos and the shows. The Valley of Fire, just 45 minutes north of Las Vegas, is a spectacular trip with brilliant red rock outcroppings all along the drive. The road passes through Overton, with its Lost City museum which tells the story or early inhabitants and the building of the Hoover Dam. Just past Pahrump Death Valley offers short side roads into the scenery, at 20 Mule Team Road and Artists Road, and the spectacular view from Zabriskie Point. A real surprise was the Pahrump Winery, with the lovely restaurant Symphony. Although no bets were placed and no fortunes won, Las Vegas offered an exciting escape from the ordinary, and the thrill of the track will not be forgotten soon.

WEST SENECA MEMORIAL DAY PARADE

May God Bless our fallen hero's. This would be a great statement to open any Memorial Day Event, because that is what Memorial Day is meant to do, honor those who gave all during their me in the Service of protec ng our American Freedom!

On May 28th many WNYCC members with their cars paraded up Union Road in West Seneca in the Annual Memorial Day Parade. It was a beau ful day (weather wise), both sides of the street were lined with children and their families awai ng the passing of the Corve es, because each car was loaded with candy, soon to be tossed in their direc on. It was raining candy for about one half hour, kids running all over trying to collect as much as possible!

So for those of you who missed this wonderful event, thanks to Bill Shephard, you can look at the a ached photos and see just who was in the Parade, their guest and their cars, saves me the me necessary to type the names and cars, thanks Bill!!

Upon our comple on of the Parade we proceed to The Olive Branch Family Restaurant on Union near French for Breakfast or Lunch depending on your desire. A er we finished ea ng we all went our separate ways.

Thanks to all who set this up and a special thanks to all the members who par cipated in this memorable event, and again "God Bless America"

Bob O'Connor

THOUSAND ISLANDS, ALEXANDRIA BAY NY John and I joined WNYCC in March 2018. The first event that we were excited to participate in was the Thousand Island Trip. The trip was very well organized. Rain or shine, we were prepared to take our 2017 Corvette Grand Sport Convertible. It’s always fun to see the look on fellow travelers faces watching a convoy of corvettes pass by. Our accommodations in the recently remodeled Captain Thomson’s Resort were very comfortable. The balcony view overlooked the inner harbor and waterway. We ate our meals at Riley’s by the River. The restaurant offered a variety of tasty meals and great view of the waterway. We really enjoyed the boat tour and the Boldt Castle tour. This trip offered us some much needed down time and an opportunity to get to know WNYCC members. We look forward to participating in more events. ~John & Charlene Drogi

Thousand Islands Trip I hate to use the words Corvette and blustery in the same sentence but…the Club event to Alexandria Bay brings both to mind! Once again Pete and Geanine managed to get all those involved going in the right direction and arrive at our destination, Captain Thomson’s Resort in the 1000 Islands. Our early season Escape Package included many things! 2 nights at the newly renovated resort, 2 tickets for the Uncle Sam’s 2 Nation Tour and Boldt Castle and a fairly liberal meal package at Riley’s, right in town. Also included this year were two 1000 Islands mugs and two cold drink cups. Meeting most of the group at the Pembroke rest area, the group traveled to Alex Bay almost without a flaw. John and Diana had to double back when a wiper motor had issues. We saw enough rain to “spot” the cars. We all gathered at Rileys’ for dinner and re-connected with members and made plans for Tuesday. The 2 Nation Tour was informative and COLD! Lots of legends and stories along the way. Boldt Castle was amazing! Summer gardens were being put in place as restoration of the castle continues. Nearby docents were helpful in answering all questions. We decided to take a quick tour of the boat house across the river and were glad we did. Bots of different kinds and eras were displayed and the craftsmanship of both the vessels and buildings was apparent! Dinner on Tuesday night had us scattered about the town. We opted for BBQ. Side note…Congrats to Deb and Randy on their recent retirements! Wednesday morning has us all going in different directions. Some headed to Canada, some to the Waterloo Outlet Mall. We opted for a wine tour at the 1000 Islands Winery …(oh to be 18 again)..and then we too headed for home. Again thanks to Pete and Geanine for another wonderful Club event. Submitted by Nancy Egan
