Held once a year, this program brings a select group of active and civic-minded citizens to Aultman Hospital for a day of shadowing a member of the medical staff. It was an honor to be considered part of this group and, having been born at Aultman Hospital, it was a homecoming of sorts. Spending the morning with Dr. Suzan Cheng, Stark Radiation Oncology, was fascinating. One, I need to eat more fruits and vegetables, and two, the coordination and planning involved in operating the department is extensive to say the least. It certainly is a team effort. If more people could experience what goes on behind the scenes at the hospital, I think we would all be better patients. Dear Chamber members,Well, here we are and it is already October! A little over a month from now, it will beElection Day on November 3rd and we should all be preparing to exercise our right tovote. If you're not registered to vote or need to update your information, the deadline to do so is October 5. Early voting will begin on October 6.There are quite a few very important decisions facing us as voters in November—mayoral, City Council, township trustee, and Board of Education races; levies for school,library, and road funding; and three proposed amendments to the State Constitution.The Legislative Committee heard a presentation from the Massillon Public Library inSeptember and will be listening to presentations for and against Issue 3 at the October 8meeting. Recommendations from the Legislative Committee regarding your Chamber'sstance on these items will be discussed and voted on at the October 13 Board meeting.Please watch your email for information after that.If you are interested in learning more about Issue 3, please plan to attend the LegislativeCommittee meeting on October 8 at 8:00 a.m. at the Chamber. Issue 3 is a proposedamendment to the Constitution “granting a monopoly for the commercial production andsale of marijuana for recreational and medicinal purposes.” (Source: 9.18.2015http://www.starkcountyohio.gov/uploads/cd/32/cd3205a42af3f5bea239e6eabba63aca/gen15issues.pdf) Roger Geiger, Vice President, NFIB/OH Executive Director, will be providing information opposing the passage of Issue 3. Watch for more details.The Stark County Board of Elections website (starkcountyohio.gov/board-of-elections)has a wealth of information about the logistics of voting along with who and what will beon the ballot. Workforce Investment Board Can Fund Medical Assistant TrainingThe local and state demand for more medical assistants and other positions in hospitalsettings and physician offices will be met thanks to a $386,616 Sector PartnershipNational Emergency Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) that the WorkforceInvestment Board of Stark and Tuscarawas counties has received. The local Board will provide funding for eligible dislocated workers for both classroomand on-the-job training for medical assistants and other healthcare in-demand positionsthat are paid above the entry level rate of pay for the region. The purpose of theNational Emergency Grant is to assist states and local workforce boards to provide in-demand career pathways for the dislocated workers. The grant is designed to effectivelyand efficiently re-employ dislocated workers, so those eligible for the program must bedislocated workers who have been unemployed for at least 27 weeks, unemploymentinsurance claimants likely to exhaust their benefits, or eligible veterans.Jennifer Meek Eells, Executive Director to the Board, explained that the typical length of training for medical assistants averages nine to twelve months through adult careerand technical programs, with an average cost for training and certification of $8,000.Hospitals can then hire and train these individuals. The Salvation Army Celebrates 150 Years
What started as a movement in London made its way around the globe, and this summer, The Salvation Army celebrated its 150th anniversary of service. Founded byWilliam Booth in east London in 1865, The Salvation Army was inspired by Boothʼs son,who noted the large number of homeless people sleeping along the banks of theThames River. Boothʼs response was, “Go and do something”—a statement TheSalvation Army has epitomized for decades.The efforts of The Salvation Army have branched far beyond England. The organizationis now active in 162 countries, anchored by the communal desire to offer spiritual, physical, emotional, and financial support to those in crisis. The Salvation Army ofMassillon has carried out Boothʼs mission since the 1885.The Salvation Army of Massillon stays busy, recently distributing nearly 500 backpacksand back-to-school supplies and services; helping the homeless find safe, secure shelter; and feeding the hungry through its Choice Food Pantry and weekly Hot Mealsprogram. The youth programs recently expanded to include a parents-and-tots program;a new arts and drama program will begin this fall.
