Dear Shipmates,
I look forward to serving as your Branch
President. I wish to thank the outgoing branch
officers and board members for their service and to
thank those who continue to serve as officers and
board members. We have a great team and I hope
that we can continue to meet our goals and
objectives.
On June 14, 2014, I attended my first Soap Box
Derby on Capitol Hill and witnessed the Fleet
Reserve in action. Our driver and car will be
heading to Akron, Ohio as a contestant for the
Championship. Thanks to all the volunteers in
Branch 24, and the Fleet Reserve Club for their
support. We will be recruiting drivers for next
year.
Your new officers look forward to our first official
Board Meetings at the Fleet Reserve and our
first East Coast Regional and National
Conferences. We will strive to keep everyone
informed and hope for participation of all members
at every event local, regional or national.
As a members of the Fleet Reserve, we encourage
everyone to exercise our legislative forum from the
National Headquarters. There is legislation
pending and increased scrutiny of the VA. We
have been associated with Branch 24 for
many years and we know that we can make a
difference.

Let me introduce myself as the new president of

who held office and manned a committee last year. I now
want to thank everyone who will be holding office or
committee positions this year. I do have a request for our
next meeting of movies to send overseas to one of our
military groups along with microwave popcorn. They said
they are in need of entertainment and snacks.

A commemorative plaque from the year 1913, cast from metal recovered from the USS Maine was given to Branch 24 by FRA
National headquarters. It depicts the Greek goddess Athena with a shield in her left hand and the right outstretched over the
sinking battleship. Athena's shield bears the words Patriotism and Devotion surrounding an eagle carrying the 13 star U.S.
shield. The image was designed for the U.S. Government by the famous sculptor, Charles Keck who died on April 23, 1951, and
cast in New York by Williams Foundry. The plaque reads, "This Tablet Is Cast From Metal Recovered From The U.S.S. Maine."
The USS Maine was raised and much of the metal was removed with most being used for souvenirs. Plaques can be seen in a
variety of places throughout the country. It has been installed in the rotunda above the encased chair from the stateroom of the
USS Maine.
The USS Maine was launched November 18, 1889 from New York Navy Yard. She was the first of four ships in the US Navy to
hold that name.
On February 15th, 1898 an explosion destroyed the entire forward section of the ship. Opinion quickly turned hostile in the
United States when an inquiry concluded a mine or external explosive charge had caused the disaster.
She rested in the middle of Havana Harbor for 14 years with one of its masts still visible above the water line. The USS Maine
was finally raised on February 15, 1912, in and much of the metal was removed with most being used for souvenirs. On March
16th she was sunk in the Gulf of Mexico with a ceremony and full military honors.
The center Mast of the Maine rests at Arlington National Cemetery where the FRA Auxiliary pilgrimages to lay a wreath each
year. 229 USS Maine casualties are interred in section 24 at Arlington beside the memorial. Of these, the identities of 62 are
known, and the rest remain unknown.
The mizzenmast (far right) rests at the seawall on the U.S. Naval Academy.
