PASTEL SOCIETY OF NEW JERSEY www.pastelsocietynj.org JUNE • 2018 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE CALENDAR OF EVENTS Facebook PSNJ Member Page Dear Members, Bloom, at last, is all around us and what a better way to celebrate nature than derive inspiration from it? Our Paint In the Garden event was held early in May in preparation for the plein air season and several of us gathered in my garden to compare our gear, exchange tips and paint quick sketches. Look up our PSNJ Members FB group page for images of that enjoyable day. Membership renewal notices will be sent out soon. Please renew your membership in a timely fashion. Starting this year your membership cards will be emailed to you, rather than snail mailed. Our PUMP event (Paid Up Membership Party) is tentatively scheduled for 9/16. We had a fun time last year and hope you will be able to attend. Coming up in fall are two exhibitions in new venues, a demonstration by our own Jeri Greenberg and a workshop in planning. In spring we will hold our second Biennial Juried Signature show, which counts towards your D-PSNJ assignation, as well as our annual Members show. Speaking of the latter, the board is looking to revise and improve the award structure. As always, we thrive to improve your PSNJ experience. Seeing this toy caboose nestled in a heap of old toy railroad tracks brought me back to the days in Brooklyn, NY, where as a child we used to pass the old train yards in Coney Island.

I thought if only that little toy train could speak of the wonder and entertainment it brought to the child or adult who played with it. I have always felt intrigued by trains and the lonely Caboose in particular.

Caroline Klein - Somehow, I always knew art was a career I wanted, although I was also drawn to the field of fashion. I designed and made my first two prom gowns and made my wedding dress. My art education was both formal and informal, from a commercial art school in Tenn. to informal classes at the Kunst Academy in Munich, Germany. Over the years, I have taken classes and workshops in pastels, oils, colored pencil and sumi-e (oriental watercolor.)

I am an Exhibiting Member of the Guild of Creative Art, Shrewsbury NJ, as well as past president. While there I taught sumi-e and pastels. I’m pleased with the years that I have spent running our figure workshop at the Guild, booking models and arranging the classes. In my home studio, I taught classes in colored pencil.

Featured Volunteer Caroline Klein

I am also a Signature member of the Pastel Society of New Jersey, an Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, and a charter member of the Plein Air Painters of the Jersey Coast. I am also an early member of the Pastelists’ Salon of New Jersey.

Our retirement home has a 20x20 foot loft which serves as my studio. Lately, I have been working primarily on landscapes and some figure work. My pastel boxes are a mixture of brands, from hard to soft, with no particular brand dominating the collection.

There are times when I feel guilty about abandoning Sumi painting, but it is difficult to juggle too many mediums at the same time. I am, however, extremely proud of the numerous awards I have received in this medium in both national and international shows.

At this time, working plein air gives me a feeling of freedom. It is hard to say that any one thing inspires me. It is of the moment. Right now, these are on the easel.

PSNJ Exhibitions News- submitted by Anita Gladstone

It’s hard to believe, but 2018 is almost half gone, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t still exhibition opportunities for PSNJ members. Just in time for the holiday season, for the month of October, we will have a special Small Works Exhibit at the Peg Williams Gallery in the Short Stories Bookshop & Community Hub in Madison. The maximum framed size will be 16” in either direction, so keep that in mind when considering what you might enter.

Also, our 2018 Annual Juried Exhibit will be held in a new venue this year - The Gallery Space in Rahway, NJ. Crane’s Mill has been a lovely place for our exhibits, but it is exciting to find a new venue and audience for the superb paintings being created by our membership. The show will run November 1 - November 30. Our awards juror will be Brian Bailey, PSA-MP, IAPS-MC. Selection jurors will be Casey Klahn, PSA, Alain Picard, PSA and Jeanne Rosier Smith, PSA.

Please watch your email for details.

The Biennial Signature and Board Members Invitational Exhibit was held at the Wyckoff Family YMCA from March 5 through the closing reception on March 25. It proved to be an excellent showcase of our talented Signature Members and Board Members to a new audience. We had a nice crowd at the closing reception. The 2019 Biennial Juried Signature Members Exhibit will be held at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown from April 3, 2019 - May 21, 2019.

Monadnock Area Artists Association2018 Workshops

www.monadnockareaartists.org“Realistic Pet Portraits in Pastel” - Lisa Ober

September 2018

Lisa Ober, PSA, IAPS-MC, will be your instructor in this hands-on workshop sharing her experience creating life-like pastel pet portraits. Lisa’s step-by-step approach to teaching pastel pet portraiture insures that when this workshop is complete you will know how to develop a realistic pet portrait from the first sketch through signing the finished painting.

Lisa will talk through the secrets to creating absolutely pet-able fur whether painting cats, dogs, horses, or other furry creatures. She will address the special issues of painting all black or all white fur, a common challenge. She will also show you how to make incredibly life-like eyes, a critical component for a realistic pet portrait that might leap off your paper! Time permitting, Lisa will also provide great tips for photographing pets in order to get the most flattering reference photos.
