Quarterly Bulletin ● 2020 ● Issue 1 ● March 2020 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Jason Hoke Dear GDCA Members, Happy New Year to all the members of the Great Dane Club of America. This year has already brought about great opportunities to reach out to the public and promote our regal breed. In December we hosted the Meet the Breed booth in Orlando. I cannot thank Jay Miller enough as our Public Education Chair for her tireless dedication to this most important task. She has helped produce two wonderful booths for not only the AKC show in Orlando but also in NYC for the event that was held in the Javits Center. Along with the production she mans the booth day in and day out. That is dedication! As you know a chair of a committee relies so much on our dedicated volunteers who’s love of our breed truly shows by spending hours in the booth answering questions and educating the public. I want to take a moment to personally thank all of the volunteers from both Orlando and NYC. I am sure all the members of the GDCA join me in extending our gratitude for all of your efforts. From Orlando: Carol Mosher Lisa Williams Terry and Valerie Wagner Lori Cornelius Pam Deloria Gary Usher Bob Peare Rachal Wilson Jody and Steve Hill Maverich Leggo Leitch Maja Kazazic Jackie Finkel Tudor Wessel Cathy De Mott Laura Coomes Karen Pacino Dave Miller And a Big Shout out to two Juniors who volunteered, Allison Galliant and Izzy Eaton!!! Everyone must always take the time to encourage the youth of our sport. They are our future!! Then in NYC at the Javits Center I want to thank: Jennifer Mack A special thanks to you for designing the second booth. Everyone loved it and your hard work was so well executed. The GDCA couldn’t be happier to be represented with such beautiful work. Jeffrey and Betsy Ball Cathy Dlugsz Mary Fran Cini Kira Wright Melody and Rich Massari Mr & Mrs, Stacy Smith As you can see it takes a village to have such events run so well. All members of the GDCA should try to volunteer at some point. We all need help throughout the year. Please remember to support our committees through volunteering. HELPING OUR OWN Bill Stebbins

The Helping Our Own Program was developed about 10 years ago to assist members of the GDCA who are aspiring breeder-judges to obtain Sweepstakes assignments. An important part of an original judging application is in-ring experience. This would include stewarding as well as judging sanctioned matches and Sweeps. The GDCA affiliates have been supportive of this program and usually use the Helping Our Own list (on the GDCA website) to select their Sweeps judges. If you have aspirations to become a breeder-judge and would like to have your name added to this list, please contact me at your earliest convenience.

BREED MENTORS

Bill Stebbins

I have always had a profound belief that breed mentors are an invaluable tool in guaranteeing a healthy future for any breed. The GDCA has some 5 dozen individuals who are approved breed mentors. The knowledge and potential assistance possessed by these individuals is what any breed should desire.

For anyone wishing to become an approved judge of Danes they must have one of these mentors listed on their application form. Some aspiring judges will obtain the required ringside mentoring at an all-breed show, Specialty or even the National. Breed mentors are usually only aware of the people that desire mentoring if they are contacted to do so. To that end I recently proposed a more proactive approach by our breed mentors through the assistance of our affiliate clubs in providing this assistance. I have attended affiliate club Specialties where the club has provided a formal ringside mentoring section at ringside and has advertised this opportunity in their premium lists. The club has arranged for GDCA breed mentors (often times members of that particular Specialty club) to volunteer to help any attendees and it seems to have worked out quite well. Those of you that are mentors are already aware of this proposed program while others might consider this a positive adjunct to their club’s Specialty shows. For future judges to learn the breed in a manner that coincides with the beliefs of the GDCA would go a long way to maintain an appropriate knowledge level within the ranks of Dane judges. To wit… our recent Breed Standard revision had some notable changes other than the approval of the Merle. You tell me how many people coming into our

breed are aware of the following revised statement… “Lack of true Dane breed type, as defined in this Standard, is the most serious fault.” I hope that we can get more affiliate clubs to become involved in this most important educational tool.

HEALTH & RESEARCH

Darryl Pitts ‘Color Code’ Revision The committee would like to thank all of those that took the time to review the draft and share your comments and suggestions for the revised ‘Color Code’; all suggestions and comments are being taken into consideration. The document will now be referred to as the ‘Breeders Color Inheritance Guide’. The Health & Research Committee will continue to work on the document revision which shall include peer review and independent consultation. Pending these findings, future edits will be made and submitted to the board for further review and/or approval. If approved by the Board, final document will be submitted to the membership for a vote. OFA - CHIC Requirements Advanced cardiac exam with echocardiogram will now be required by the OFA for Great Danes to obtain a CHIC number. A grace period will be in effect until March 15, 2020 after which time auscultation will be no longer be accepted to complete the CHIC requirements. Post-Operative Bleeding Complications The Health and Research Committee, along with the Charitable Trust, is actively reviewing studies and information available to implement a recommended post-operative protocol in an effort to reduce the number of post-operative bleeding complications within our breed. We hope to have this available in the very near future.

We are very excited to announce a first for our breed! The first RACH titled Great Dane. RACH Whitwind's Something Wicked This Way Comes CD PCD BN RM3 RAE3 BCAT CGC CGCA TKN. Salem is owned by Heather Whitaker. We are very proud of them! A RACH title is an AKC Rally® Champion. The letters RACH may be added preceding a dog’s name when it has achieved a minimum of 300 championship points from the Advanced B, Excellent B and Master classes, with a minimum of 150 points from the Master class; and 20 triple qualifying scores obtained from the Advanced B, Excellent B and Master classes. In other words, it's very competitive and takes a lot of dedication, hard work, teamwork, and many entries to earn!! Shirley Spall, the Central Division, Lynda Moriarty, and myself are hard at work getting companion events organized at our new 2020 national location in Decatur, IL. Thank you for your patience as we get the details ironed out. Don't forget that rankings for companion and performance events are listed on the GDCA website. I want to thank those that keep those rankings up to date for all of their hard work. Special thanks to Traci Rinoldo and Gayle Smith.

Beloved husband and best friend to his wife Patricia, he resided in New Jersey for 76 of his 80 years. He was in the trucking industry for many years and owned a number of companies, including Robin Distributors, Renee’s Pastry Shop and Robby’s Trucks. Bob was an animal lover, and along with his wife Pat, well known in the worldwide Great Dane community as a breeder, exhibitor and therapy dog trainer, bettering the breed for over fifty years. (Haltmeier Great Danes) He was predeceased by his son-in-law, John

Comly in 2014; a sister, Anita Marcus and a grandson, Shane Haltmeier. Survived by three children, Robin Frauenpreis (Scott) of Newton, NJ, Renee Comly of Marshall, VA and Robert J. (Bill) Lewis (USAF, ret.) 1944 - 2019: Husband of Betty Lewis Member: GDCA Member: GDC of New England Member: GDC of Central North Carolina Charter Member: Souhegan Kennel Club Kennel name "Waccabuc(Fawns and Brindles) Lt Col William C. Lewis (USAF, ret.) 1944-2019 After battling the complications of Lyme disease for nearly 30 years, Bill gave up the fight on 4 November 2019. His wish was to help others avoid suffering the same way he did. Toward that end, he has asked me to let people know about some available information you can pass to someone you may know who has been affected by this awful disease. Here are two books which may be able to help them: Rising Above Lyme Disease by Julia Greenspan, ND, and Unlocking Lyme by William Rawls, MD. Please honor Bill’s memory by getting help or helping someone else to get help. Bill was born & raised in several places in New York State, and it was in South Salem, NY that he met me, his future wife. We started dating in high school, and designated a date in December 1960 as our first anniversary. We didn’t marry until August of 1967, after graduating from The College of Wooster. So, we did, and I will continue to celebrate, both of those dates. Also, in 1967, Bill joined the United States Air Force. Here is what our son, Brian, wrote about his career: Lt Col Lewis joined the Air Force in 1967, and was commissioned at Officer Training

School, Lackland AFB, TX. Performing duties as an administration and personnel officer, he served in the secretive Foreign Technology Division at today's National Air and Space Intelligence Center; in the famed 89th Airlift Wing, home to Air Force One; as an aide to an Air Force major general in Korea; and commanded a Military Entrance and Processing Station in Fresno, CA. His career culminated at Hanscom AFB, MA, where he retired after 20 years of faithful and honorable service. He continued his work at Hanscom for nearly 30 years more, providing personnel and training support to various Special Program Offices of the Air Force Materiel Command. His decorations include the meritorious service medal, and the Korea Defense Service Medal. As noted above, our first assignment was at Wright-Patterson AFB, in Dayton, OH. Our first pet was a parakeet. He was a fun family member, but we really wanted a dog. Dayton is where we met Bob & Joyce Ecker of Devrok Great Danes, and fell in love with the breed. Over the next 40 years, we raised, exhibited, and loved this breed. Bill and I have been, and I continue to be, active members of several Great Dane Clubs, specifically: GCDA, GDCNE, & GDCCNC. Even though we opted for smaller breeds as we got older, the Great Dane continues to be our first love. His GT DANE license plate is now retired. Souhegan Kennel Club also occupied a special place in Bill’s heart. At his passing, he was one of only two of the original Charter members to still maintain a membership. Bill is survived by me, Betty Lewis, our son & daughter-in-law, Brian & Joy, and their children, Josh & his wife Bobbie, Ian, Ellie, & Khylee Lewis. Bill’s brother Steve, and his wife, Judy also survive him. If you wish to donate anyplace in his name, I think he would like it to be The Great Dane Club of America Charitable Trust. Evelyn was the last of the founding members of the Hoosier Great Dane Club (1963). Her kennel name was Four Leaf Great Danes. She always handled her own dogs (Brindle and Fawn), and liked to travel to the shows with her best friend, Ruth Holzer. She taught handling and conformation classes at IOTC for many years. In the 1970’s Evelyn taught me to handle my own dogs and invited me to join the HGDC. She remained active. (Courtesy of Kathy Frederick) Mrs. Robert C. (Carolyn) Thomas January 4th, 2020 Wife of Robert C. Thomas (1925 – 2011) AKC Licensed Judge Breeder, Owner, Handler of Harmony Hill Great Danes, Marlboro, MA (Fawns and Brindles)

Beginning in 1956 Carolyn and her husband Bob (Robert C. Thomas 1925 - 2011) bred Great Danes under the Harmony Hill prefix, producing twenty seven litters in twenty five years. "Harmony Hill” was originally an apple farm and our old colonial type house was built in 1840. The kennel was remodeled from the back section of a 100 foot barn ... “Our whelping and puppy room is in the house, right off the kitchen ..." Despite retaining only nine bitches and five studs for their limited breeding program, there were 143 Champions directly bred from Harmony Hill dams and sires. Carolyn owner-handled their Danes to their championships, but the whelping box was her first love. Carolyn said their favorite days were Joker's Specialty Breeds from the Veteran Class, all Stud Dog and Brood Bitch wins, and any award at the GDCA Futurity. They felt fortunate to have bred two Best in Futurity and two BOS in Futurity winners. Of special note were two Dane bitches who became Top Dog All Breeds in Sweden (1969 - bred by us, and owned by the Magnussons), and in Canada (1972 - a Joker daughter bred by the Fletchers). Ch. Harmony Hill Sherwood Joker produced 46 champions. Carolyn and Bob's two children,

Linda and Robert, were involved in the kennel and learned a love of animals, the value of good sportsmanship, and a sense of responsibility. For several years the children competed in Junior Showmanship -- hence Carolyn's interest in judging these classes. Carolyn's strong belief in education is noted: "Since a majority of judging of Great Danes is done by judges outside the breed, it was necessary to do symposiums at the National GDCA." She chaired a committee for the first AKC Dane slideshow for prospective judges. As a member of Dog Show Judges Association of America and the American Dog Show Judges she presented programs on the Great Dane for both worthwhile organizations. The AKC approved Carolyn for the Sporting, Working, Non-Sporting, and Herding Groups -- and she enjoyed assignments in 14 foreign countries. The breeders and owners of the Top Twenty contenders are justifiably proud of their Great Danes. “I deeply appreciate the honor they have bestowed by inviting me to judge the 'cream of the crop'." Carolyn leaves a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, and two great grandchildren. Harmony Hill, a small breeding kennel, kept the breeding and exhibiting of Danes as a challenging hobby. "We hope we have been an asset to the breed."
