ORGHA, PO Box 51186, Livonia 48151 www.OldRosedaleGardens.com Publication Date: April 15, 2016 President’s Press by Dick McLain Happy cold and warm spring. Such weird weather. I am writing a small column this week as we start anew this month. Jean Niland has given up her position as ORGHA president due to a number of different conflicts and time constraints. She has been a great addition to the board and when time permits may well be back to serve in one of our positions. I agreed to a request from the board members to take the position as the President for the remainder of the year. I would like to send a big thank you to Jean for doing a great job in her tenure. We really appreciate it. She was really great to step up to the position when needed. THANKS JEAN! Be sure to check the calendar for events. We have the spring cleanup coming this month, home of the season, garden walk, and the neighborhood yard sale coming soon after that. Think about showing off your yard in the garden walk this year. I know that we are all just waiting for the summer fun events that are a part of the neighborhood. Look through the newsletter and see what is, was or will be. See you all out and about! Spring Cleanup on April 30th Spring is here and once again time to spruce up the neighborhood. Join us for our annual spring cleanup on APRIL 30TH. We will meet at Blackburn and Plymouth at 9 am. Bring your favorite gardening tools. Paper and plastic bags are provided. Enjoy a cup of coffee and donut as appreciation for your hard work. What ever time you can offer will help keep our neighborhood beautiful. Direct any questions to: Linda Koloski 7342612377 Kathy Burnett 7347169079 ORGHA News – April 2016 1

Rosedale Scholarship By Barb Matthei This year, in response to comments received, the Old Rosedale Gardens Homeowners Association Board decided to award one $500 College Scholarship to a high school senior instead of the two scholarships that we previously awarded each year. To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must currently be a high school senior, must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, must have resided in Old Rosedale Gardens for at least one year prior to April 1, must have participated in at least one service/volunteer activity for ORGHA as a High School junior or senior, and the family must have contributed to ORGHA in 2016. Applicants can still complete their service requirement by volunteering for the Spring Cleanup. If you or someone you know satisfies these requirements, download an application at http://www.oldrosedalegardens.com or contact Barbara Matthei at 7344216821 for an application form. The completed application forms and high school transcript, must be submitted to ORGHA by May 15 th . The winner will be chosen by a drawing from the pool of all eligible applicants and will be announced in the June Newsletter.

City Government Update Water Main Spring Update on Water Main project: The project is not over. They will work until the reclamation is complete. After we get further into spring they will be back to complete the work with more topsoil and hydroseeding. There will also need to be an assessment of sprinkler damage that has not been fixed yet. You will need to identify issues as sprinkler season returns. I have received feedback from several sources that the city has been getting a large number of calls from residences concerned that there would be no additional reclamation. Be patient. They will return and make sure each yard is completed. The seeding will need to wait until the end of April to allow the soil temperature to be warm enough to support seed germination. So the request is do not flood the city or the contractor with phone calls. I will let you know when they are finished. Let me know if you have any questions. I also have one rough estimate for replacement of the lead service lines. It was from a different drilling company and they went high ($6000; price may vary based on the individual situation). I am sure we can do better so stay tune as it get more bids. DTE Tree Trimming The tree trimming phase may not be that far away. One important piece of information was contributed by a neighbor, Rob Seiter. It is about a disease that can kill oak trees called Oak Wilt. It appears DTE is aware of this issue but we all need to be careful to monitor the situation if you have an oak tree that is marked for trimming. The following is from Rob: I think the residents should be aware of Oak Wilt during this DTE tree trimming. Oaks of any variety should not be trimmed from April 1 through November 1 because they are susceptible to Oak Wilt. There is a fungus that is transmitted by insects and it is lethal to oaks. The fungus attacks the tree's vascular system and can kill a tree in as little as 30 days. Any open wound is a site where the fungus can enter the oak. Here are some websites that describe the problem: http://treedoctor.anr.msu.edu/oakwilt/ https://www.michigan.gov/som/0,4669,719229938_34758352413,00.html http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2015/07/15/oakwiltmichigantreesfirewood/30201121/ I contacted the Livonia Forestry person and she recommended the April 1 to November 1 ban on trimming oaks. She has spoken with the DTE people and they agreed to the time window. Not sure that this is getting to the actual person who is trimming the trees. I called the DTE rep from the card that was left on my door and he told me they were aware of the issue and would not be trimming oaks during the summer. Still not sure that this message gets to the actual tree trimmer. My oak has the white dot indicating it is to be trimmed. We have seen Oak Wilt kill four, hundred year old oaks at our cottage in West Michigan and it took about a month to kill these trees. A neighbor cut into his oaks on Memorial weekend, and they were dead by 4th of July. Also, we tried to save another oak tree on the lot line with injections by an arborist, but it just died over several years and had to be removed at considerable cost. Thanks for this info Rob. Remember this for the future in case you ever need to trim your own trees and you have oaks. If anyone thinks they have an oak tree marked for trimming and are not sure let me know. WOW Cable Company Tree Trimming WOW and their contractor will have met with us by the time you get this newsletter. I will update all with information from that meeting. Thanks to the folk who have contributed toward ORGHA in early 2016. We have already received 112 contributions which represent 18% of the neighborhood residents. So far Ingram has a slight lead in the contribution rate ! The suggested contribution for 2016 is $30, but as always, any amount contributed is gratefully accepted.
