PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Shipmates,
It is my honor and privilege to be your
newly elected President for 2013-2014. I will
strive to make Branch 24 the best veterans group in
the FRA. My main focus will be: increase our
membership, retain current members, provide
programs and activities which will sustain our
members so they will attend meetings.
I have chosen to participate in the Wounded
Warriors/Navy Safe Harbor Programs, which will
be my project for the year. I would like to ask the
members of Branch 24 to join me in assisting these
veterans by volunteering your time for whatever
they need. I will also ask you to support the effort
to reduce the FRC mortgage by purchasing raffle
tickets. Interestingly, the ticket number you
purchase is good for all daily drawings through the
year and stays in the pool even if you win multiple
times. By playing the game you help reduce the
club’s overhead as well.
The Branch can be a great place for our
members to visit and participate in programs,
which includes having volunteers serve on
committees to support Americanism/Patriotism,
Youth Activities, Membership and special
projects. If you would like to volunteer, please
contact me.
We had great participation by our members
at the Memorial Day Parade which is co-sponsored
by Branch 24 and the City of Annapolis. Our
Branch and Unit members participated in the
parade and services at the City Dock. We held
Memorial services at the Fleet Reserve Club Dock
with a fresh wreath adorned with a rose for each
Branch 24 shipmate (29) and Unit Member (3) that
passed away in the past year. (continued on pg. 4) …...

AUXILIARY
Unit 24 Fleet Reserve Association July—August 2013
UNIT MEETINGS: Katherine Bearden, President 410-255-6620
Regular meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 7:35 p.m.
The Board of Directors meetings precede regular meetings at 7:00 p.m.
Chaplain: Linda Masterson (410) 263-3569 It has been a difficult month, as some of our members and their families have experienced serious illnesses and lost loved ones. Ken Carter passed away after a lengthy illness; Dottie and her family need our continued support and prayers. Bob and Janice Jenkins appreciate everyone’s care and concern during Bob’s ongoing illness. Kimball Wheet, son of Virginia Wheet and brother of Loretta Jorden, passed away suddenly from complications following surgery. Please inform Linda of cards sent or visits paid to members or their families. Linda was unable to attend May’s meeting due to illness, and Mary Ellen McGrath served as chaplain. Theresa Smith’s mother in law is recuperating from surgery to
heal a broken leg.
Americanism/Patriotism: Stacy Fazekas Troops to whom Stacy was sending supplies have returned home. Claire Purdy’s son is now in Afghanistan, so we may now send items to him to share with troops. Stacy reported that our Unit was represented in the Annapolis Memorial Day Parade on May 27 by Loretta Jorden, her daughter Loretta and their cousin, and herself. Our Unit was represented at the 5/19 Ft. Meade Massing of the Colors by Anne Tydings, Loretta, her daughter Loretta,
and Kathy McCruden. Diane Hoover received our Unit’s new banner.
Welfare: Theresa Smith 410-757-8768 [email protected] A new Welfare chairperson is needed for the upcoming year. Duties include preparing and delivering holiday food baskets, and collecting and distributing donated items. In the past months clothing and linens were delivered to Sarah’s House and My Brother’s Pantry and Camp Greentop. For Sarah’s House, Mattie brought items, Diane donated a ham and Theresa made casseroles. The Autism Walk and Oklahoma Relief Fund were other causes that we helped to support. Theresa attended the Tea Party at Melwood, at which some military children are students. Barbara Hrynyshen, Mattie Kovac and Theresa donated clothing during the past month. Barb Hrynyshen, Mattie, Theresa, Linda
Masterson and Sylvia Wainio all work at the Thrift Shop now.
Membership: Sue Hogan Our membership is 583 on 4/1/13. 2013-14 Officers: Kathy Bearden-President; Susan Hogan-Vice president; Toni O’Neill-Treasurer; Kathy McCruden-Secretary; Diane Hoover-Financial Secretary. Directors: Loretta Jorden, Dorothy Carter, Barb Hrynyshen, Janice Jenkins, Linda Masterson, Mary Ellen McGrath, June Rasmussen, Amanda Smith, Theresa Smith, Anne Tydings and Sylvia
Wainio.
Youth Activities: Loretta Jorden (410) 956-6015 Eight volunteers consisting of Girl Scouts and family members helped with the Vet Dogs Walk at Quiet Waters, by monitoring pathways and providing pedestrian safety. On 5/25, the Girls participated in the Pilot program at the Bay Bridge Airport, which was geared toward Scouts in grades 5-12. Girl Scout Loretta Jorden participated with the Unit in both the Massing of the Colors and the Memorial Day parade. The Unit helped to sponsor
young racers in the Annual DC Soap Box Derby Race held on 6/15.
VAVS: For the upcoming year Theresa will chair the VAVS committee,
Upcoming events: July 2, 2014 Unit meeting July 25-28 , 2013 – ECR Convention, Falls Church, VA Oct 15-20, 2013 – National Convention – Chattanooga, TN
in memory of Ken Carter. Last month she took to the Annapolis VA Center coffee and supplies. In July she will collect for the Center tea bags, hot chocolate and Splenda. A vintage car show will be held there on 6/15. Theresa learned that a Branch member works at the
Center.
Hospital: Mary Ellen McGrath (410) 956-5454 continues to collect glasses for donation to the Lions Club and books for soldiers such as mysteries, biographies and science fiction. Barb Hrynyshen received thanks from Mary Ellen for her recent donation. A box may be placed in the Club for people to easily drop off their used items. Bingo games at the nursing home will resume in Sept. For the past few months, Valerie Reed and Terry Douglas stepped in to help with Bingo, helping
to make the event a fun diversion for the patients.
Publicity: Kathleen McCruden (443) 742-4841 Notice of meetings was submitted for publication in the community news online and in the Capital Gazette. E-mail messages containing news and events are circulated to our members on a regular basis. If any member wishes
to add an e-mail address to the circulation list, please call Kathy.
Unit Activities: Amanda Smith Joint installation of officers was held on 6/15. The Unit’s Past Presidents’ ceremony was held on 6/4. The Annual Pilgrimage at Arlington was held 4/26-27 and was a special time for Diane Hoover as National President, and for all Unit 24 members. Our National President’s Project, National Vet Dogs, held its walk at Quiet Waters Park on 4/21. Diane and the project’s coordinators greatly appreciated generous assistance from Unit members who helped with registration, sales, gift bags, water station, award table, shirt distribution, and other duties. Prior to the event on 4/19, members helped at the Club to prepare gift bags. On 4/13 our Annual Spring Dance ‘Sock Hop’ was a fun and successful event, co-chaired by Irene Romero, Toni O’Neill and Kathy Bearden. It was quite profitable, as decorating and other costs were minimized due to creativity and ingenuity of the committee members. Our Unit will be represented at the ECR Meeting July 25-28 at Westin Hotel in Tyson’s Corner, VA, by Diane Hoover, Toni O’Neill, Steve Toulotte, Sylvia Wainio, Theresa Smith, Amanda Smith Loretta Jorden, Anne Tydings and Dottie Carter. Next CLC meeting will be held 7/20 at Pax River,
Branch and Unit 93.
Refreshment Committee: Sylvia Wainio Thanks to all who provided ‘pot luck desserts’ for the June meeting. Refreshments will be needed
next for our September meeting.
Good of the Order: Steve Toulotte thanked all who supported his daughter in American Society for Suicide Prevention’s walk; their team raised a total of $15,000. Theresa and Linda Masterson are planning our Unit’s new cookbook. A cover contest will be held and recipes are
needed. Please contact Theresa or Linda for more information.
Members of Unit 24,
Elections for 2013-2014 Officers and BOD’s were held, installation was Saturday June 15th. Thank you for reelecting me as President of Unit24. My first year was a real learning experience, with lots of help from all members, especially Unit 24 officers and BOD’s. Newly elected officers and BOD of Unit 24 will be planning for the coming year budget and to discuss ideas for events and fund raisers. All members are invited to attend.
Our own Toni O’Neil is running for President of LAFRA-East Coast Region. The conference will be held in Falls Church, Va. on July 26th thru 29th. Let’s put our support behind her. Diane Hoover’s year as NP-LAFRA comes to end at the National Convention, in Chattanooga, Tn., October 16th thru 20th.
The FRC is running a lottery based on the Md. Lottery daily pick 3, the proceeds from this fund raiser is going towards the mortgage on our Club. The FRC would appreciate your held in making this a success. Tickets are $20, the drawings are daily for a 365 days, starting July 1st.
Unit 24 wishes all Dads a fun filled and enjoyable Father’s Day.
July 4th, Independence Day - We thank all members and veterans of the US military for keeping our country free, enabling all citizens of our great country can celebrate Independence Day – July 4th in the manor they choose. Thanks You!!!!

…...Unfortunately, Congressional and DOD Budget
cuts prevented us from using the Navy YP Boat
which we would have taken us to the Severn River
for Memorial Services.
We had a grand joint installation ceremony
and dinner for the officers of the FRA ranch 24 and
Auxiliary Unit 24 on June 15th. Pins and certificates
were extended to shipmates for their contributions. It
was well-attended by members and their guests.
I am excited about all of the projects and
programs to be implemented in 2013-14. Come join
us !
