President’s MessageTwo things we know for certain; Bridge players in Unit 219 are faithful to the game, resilient and generous! Freezing

weather, high winds or floods do not keep us away from the tables or from giving generously to worthy causes.

During an unusually long and cold winter in the panhandle, we bundled up and came to play bridge; our table count remained high.

In March, when members came to play bridge at Pensacola DBC and found the club in the dark due to high winds causing power line damage, they stayed. They played with minimal light from windows and an open front door. And, after a refresher course in using pick-up slips, a great game followed using flashlig ts and a lot of fun was had by all.

On April 30, 27 inches of rain flooded the western end of the Florida panhandle and resulted in only a one day closure for Pensacola DBC (you needed a boat to travel), a one day closure for Fort Walton DBC and a two day closure for Destin Bridge Clubs (the playing venue was closed). Some Pensacola players are still repairing their floode homes and some are inconvenienced by road closures with route changes to the club, but they come to play bridge faithfully.

If you read our section in the SBN, you will see recurring articles about the generosity of the members in our Unit. At the May Tallahassee DBC sectional, a raffl supporting Junior bridge in Unit 219 was held. Also, in Tallahassee, games to benefit the Animal Shelter as well as the homeless shelter were held and members volunteered to help with PBS fund raising. Panama City DBC gave the proceeds of four games to the American Cancer Association. In Pensacola, games supporting Impact 100, the American Heart Association, Relay for Life and the local Manna Food Bank were held. On June 21, clubs in Unit 219 will be participating in The Longest Day supporting the Alzheimer’s Association. An update will follow in the next issue.

We send our congratulations to Ann Ridaught from Tallahassee, Unit 219’s newest Gold Life Master!

I am proud to be the President of such a generous, enthusiastic and caring unit.

From Panama CityRobert (Bob) C. Fowler of Panama City Beach died at the age of 82 on April 2, 2014 in Fallbrook, CA at the home of his daughter. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean, in 2008 after 52 years of marriage.

Bob was a banker and after retiring and moving to Florida, his hobby was playing bridge and he attained the rank of Gold Life Master. Bob managed and directed the Panama City Duplicate Bridge Club (PCDBC) for over 30 years and also directed games at the Panama City Beach Club. Bob loved to travel and with Jean’s help, directed bridge games aboard cruise ships.

PCDBC made a memorial donation in Bob’s name to the Lynn Haven Animal Shelter (taking care of stray animals was one of Bob’s passions) and will hold an upcoming special game for the American Cancer Society in his name.

Bridge was an important part of Bob’s life and bridge in the Panama City area will definitely miss Bob!

From PensacolaOn March 31, Pensacola DBC held a party to honor three New Life Masters, from left to right: Garlan Sisco, Mary Ann Abrams and Barbara Ann Chesterfield. A 20 table game followed the celebration with overall winners; Brenda Starnes and Sid Kalishman in the open game and Judy Watson and Joanna Champlin in the 299er game. Congratulations to all!

The Pensacola DBC Annual Membership meeting was held on April 11 following a NABC Promotional game. The 2014 Board of Directors pictured left to right: Jeri Edge, President; Wes Barnes, Vice President; Vicki Schell, Secretary; Myrl Eisinger, Treasurer; Suzanne Arnold; Joyce Gardner; Mary Knowles; Richard Osborn; Stuart Siegel; and Garlan Sisco. The first Board meeting was held on May 14. One of the upcoming goals will be to update the Bylaws and the Policies and Procedure Manual.

The winners of the 17 table game were Murray Hall and Kathleen Fullerton in the open section and Bruce Dunworth and Marcia Phelps in the 299er section.

Pensacola DBC held the 4th Annual Betty Austin Memorial Day Hot Dog Roast on May 25.

Betty Austin was a long-time, very active member of our club. As Party Chair, she was known for impromptu parties on Saturday and roasting hot dogs. Betty also volunteered at the Naval Museum and the Manna Food Bank and was responsible for the beginning of recycling at our club. In 1941, as a child, Betty lived on Pearl Harbor Naval Base and watched the bombs fall on the ships in their berths. She had a lot of stories to share.

Overall winners of the Unit Championship game were Betty Sheffield and Cheryl Walker in the Open Pairs and Shirley Reischman and Vicki Schell in the 299ers.

On May 30, Pensacola held a charity game to benefit the Manna Food Bank. The April flood damaged the facility and resulted in a total pantry loss. Members were overwhelming generous, donating a car load of non-perishables and a check for $917.00.

Overall winners were Barbara and Larry Westholm in the Open Pairs and Patty Kattner and Jean Askew in the 299er pairs.

From Tallahassee The recipient of TDBC’s April charity game was Leon County’s Animal Shelter Foundation. Nineteen tables of players raised $500 and collected food and supplies to support homeless animals in the Tallahassee area.

The fundraising was boosted by several “A” players who agreed to be auctioned off for a future playmate; using a silent auction format, Robert Todd, Fernando Teson, Mitzi Duncan, Douglas Parker, and Pat

Horton were bid on and “won” by TDBC members — but the real winner was the Animal Shelter Foundation! First overall game winners were Charles Christmas and Edgar Casper in the open pairs and Jeanette Gaboardi and Gloria Ford in the 99ers pairs.Tallahassee DBC held their spring sectional on May 2-4.

Thanks to Ginger Thomas and Becky Overton, Tournament Chairs and DeVerle Little, Partnership Chair for a job well-done. A raffl was held to support the Juniors of Unit 219. Winners of the Sunday Swiss pictured left to right: Pat Horton, Fernando Teson, Raphael Schreiber, and Spencer Hurd.

Sylvia Walford (L) and Pam Flory (R) are pictured answering phones for a WFSU fundraiser. Tallahassee DBC is proud and honored to play an active role in community efforts.

President's MessageIn the May issue of ACBL’s Bulletin you’ll find the CEO’s message referring to the use of Perfume, Colognes, and ‘scents’ in general. I would like to remind all of our members that this is becoming an extremely important issue in our clubs and during our tournaments!

My bridge partner happens to be very sensitive to any type fragrance and it simply amazes me how many players continue to ignore this issue and bathe in strong perfumes or colognes. A few weeks ago a very nice gentleman came to our table reeking of cologne. He was

surprised to find that it was his fragrance that was causing my partner’s puff , watering eyes and horrid coughing attack! He didn’t think of his after-shave as a fragrance!

We all realize that you may not feel ‘normal’ without your perfume, after-shave or scented hand creams……but please take others into consideration as you get ready to come to play! If you feel that you must wear a fragrance…put it on AFTER bridge! It is simply RUDE to do otherwise!

The “other” issue that was addressed in this article was coming to play bridge when you are “under the weather” – in other words: SICK, COUGHING, SNEEZING, RUNNY NOSE and/or OPEN SORES that have not been adequately covered. ANYTHING that can be transmitted to others in close confineme t should be kept at home! We all handle the cards transmitting enough healthy germs (if there is such a thing) – please don’t bring your unhealthy germs to the bridge club!

Vero Beach News: Open House Brings in New Playersby Lyn Giuff ida

Last January, the Vero Beach Bridge Club offered four open house/free lesson dates to encourage new players to come to the club. All four events were held in the same week to save on advertising costs. We ran two ads in the local paper, hoping to attract social players currently not playing duplicate and new players who had never played bridge. Each event was run by two teachers one for the newbies and the other for those who had never played before. For the new players, we used a mini bridge lesson to introduce them to the game. The lesson for the social players was the Stayman convention.

Each session was approximately 1.5 hours in length. When our guests arrived, we offered refreshments and name tags and then had everyone introduce themselves to the group. We talked about our club, how duplicate bridge works, why we prefer playing duplicate bridge over party or rubber bridge, the ACBL, and the educational programs and student games the club has to offer. Each participant was given a folder with a copy of the Gazette, our monthly newsletter, the monthly game schedule, the class schedule for the month, and a registration form giving us their names, bridge background, and contact information. In the future, we may include a free play. After the general discussion, we broke into two groups for the bridge lesson.

We held one morning session during the week and one on a Saturday, one afternoon and one evening event. Happily, we have seen many of those who attended in our student games and attending our classes. We hope to hold this even again next season.

Trouble by Paul W Dennis

Regardless of whether you are playing Standard American , 2/1 Game Force, Kaplan-Sheinwold, Goren or any other approach-forcing system, a new suit by an un-passed hand creates an unconditional one-round force. The only time this is not true is when opener has made the severely limited rebid of one no-trump.

This works out well most of the time, but occasionally responder will pick up a hand that seems to beg for a second bid, even when the overall strength of the hand wouldn’t seem to justify the second bid.

Typically, this would involve a hand something like this:♠Q9xxx, ♥KT9xx, ♦Qx, ♣x

or perhaps

♠KJTxx, ♥Jxxxx, ♦x, ♣Jx

A few years ago I had a session where this problem arose three times during the course of the twenty-six boards played. Needless to say I got each board wrong, without necessarily doing anything terrible in the process.

Hand 1

♠87532, ♥QT432, ♦6, ♣AT

Partner opened 1♦, I responded 1♥ and partner rebid 2♣. What now? The spades were too wretched to re-bid, 2♥ (fourth suit forcing) would create a game force, 2♦ would be ridiculous and passing 2♣ risked leaving partner in a 4-2 fi .

Holding my nose, I tried 2♠ praying that partner could fin another call. Unfortunately, such was not the case as partner passed holding

♠J, ♥AK5, ♦A9874, ♣K983

Two spades went down one with nine tricks easily available in a heart contract

Hand 2

A few hands later I picked up a hand that seemed very familiar

♠98754, ♥QT432, ♦6, ♣A7

Again partner opened 1♦, again I responded 1♠ and again partner re-bid 2♣. Remembering the previous mishap, I chose to re-bid 2♥ hoping to soft-pedal on the next round.

Wrong again! This time partner bid 3N in order to show his extra values with

♠ 6, ♥A6, ♦AK8754, ♣KQJ8

Hand 3

Near the end of the evening I had that déjà vu all over again feeling as I picked up

♠ T9874, ♥J8632, ♦2, ♣A6

I can’t really describe the queasy feeling I had when I picked up this hand and heard partner open 1♦ and then rebid 2♣over my 1♠ response. Having been burned twice by taking a second call with such junky hands, this time I passed. This time partner held

♠5, ♥ AKT9, ♦QT98, ♣KQT8

and made eight tricks in clubs, but as the cards were distributed, the hand would also made eleven tricks in hearts without breaking a sweat.

Having racked up one of my normal 48% games, I headed for one of the local watering holes to post-mortem the hands. When the discussion turned to hands above, it seems that most were merely guessing and mostly guessing wrong. While I was playing fourth suit forcing, even those simply playing a new suit forcing by an un-passed hand (a/k/a bidding naturally) found these hands troublesome.

There really isn’t a natural answer to this problem. Someone suggested responding 1♥ with these weak fi e-fi es but the problem is partner almost never re-bids 1♠ with three spades and a singleton or doubleton heart.

One solution suggested to me at the time came from the late Bob Glenn, a leading bridge professional from Chicago, who suggested using a jump to 2♥ over a 1♣ or 1♦ opening to show 5-8 high card points with fi e-fi e in the majors. Another possibility would be to play the 2♥ response as showing fi e spades and four or more hearts (so partner would need to have more hearts than spades in order to pass the response).

I haven’t really made up my mind as to the best solution for these hands, so I really haven’t adopted any particular method, preferring to stumble along as in the hands described above. I am, however, open to suggestions.

President's MessageI want to remind all of our members who attended our last 4th of July Regional in Deerfield Beach that Unit 243‘s Gold Point

Regional is moving to Bonaventure in Weston from December 8th- 14th. The Hospitality of Unit 243 will be better than ever and we expect some challenging players from our winter contingent. As always, I am sure that everyone will notice the work put in by your Board. Jean Spector and Marge Pecoraro will be co-ordinating the partnership desk as well as TJ Singer setting up an on-line partnership program.

Of course Bill Rauld & Marty Robins along with the Board are setting up a comprehensive tournament schedule with some new events. Look for our new notices in the Bridge Bulletin. Please feel free to email me ([email protected]) with any comments so that we may be fully prepared for December 2014. The “long-hot” summer has started - so don’t forget to go some extra times to your local clubs where the air-conditioning is free!!!

Let’s all enjoy our bridge,

Jim Walker
