As we move into the month of June, recently dubbed “Italian-Heritage Month” in Ontario, we

look upon those wonderful individuals that embarked on a difficult journey to Canada to provide a better life for their loved ones. I continuously reflect on how my life, and the life of my family would have been different had my grandparents and relatives not taken a leap of faith. In my short time, I have been able to hear about incredible stories of hardship, and sacrifice that was necessary to provide a better life for families. Canada is a

wonderful nation that has provided a safe haven for those eager to build a new life in a land built on the hard work and determination of immigrants. I look to my own grandparents with gratitude for their perseverance during hard times, to provide my parents with a life that at one point would have seemed unimaginable. I am grateful, humbled and honoured to say that I am the descendant of immigrant grandparents whose sacrifice still echoes in my memories, in my work ethic, and my ability to understand life’s difficult paths.

This month, and every month, we must honour and remember those that sacrificed more than the clothes on their back to provide a better life for us. Hard work, determination, pride, and education are the keys to success in life. Without them, we are nothing. “Se vedi un affamato non dargli del riso: insegnagli a coltivarlo,” – Confucio

I see the face of a man wondering what will become of the day while his eyes curiously scan the room in

the hopes of finding signs of a great start to the morning. The coffee begins to boil and my father makes his way to the door to fulfill his daily ritual of getting the paper. He calmly makes his way back to the table and I begin to survey his every move. He sits quietly at the table, reading the paper, trying to adjust his eyes to the light. His eyes, hazel in colour, perk up once I begin to speak. We casually eat our meals and I see my father stare out the window in hopes of seeing the sun rise. He patiently waits for a sign of life. As he stares, I catch a glimpse of something special. I see the transformation of a man as the sunlight casts over his face shedding light upon his features. His pompadour glistens in the light, although silvery in colour, there are hints of white which become pronounced as he runs his fingers through his hair. His nose, roman in the way of great warriors, catches the light, transferring it to the other characteristics of his face. The various scars on his face are illuminated and read like stories in book, although one would never be able to decode them. The light that casts over his face gives me a moment to reflect on the past. Images begin to circulate in my mind as if a flipbook was forming. I now see my grandfather. His face has meshed with that of my fathers and I see them both staring at me. This eventually fades and I awaken from this hallucination to see the face of a father staring at his boy with kindness in his eyes, while bearing sorrow in his faded smile. I see a man who has been weathered by the storm of life, but I also see the possession of strength to continue the battle. I see a father.

Our brother, Al has been a respected businessman in Hamilton for decades and a

faithful member of our Trieste Lodge. His roots are in our Italian community from his humble beginnings at Barton and Sherman and St. Ann’s School. Al is quiet, humble, persevering and efficient. He’s been a leader in the electrical industry with an outstanding reputation for service in this basic, vital utility.

The Sons of Italy, Trieste Lodge is happy to celebrate this distinguished award presented to our brother Al Merlo. We share his pride of accomplishment. Excerpt from Ontario Electrical League:

“A longstanding member of our Hamilton Chapter has received a very prestigious award…Al Merlo is being recognized by the City of Hamilton. Please take note that Ward 5 in Hamilton has over 80,000

residents and hundreds of businesses. I would like to congratulate Al Merlo on behalf of the Hamilton and District Electrical Contractors Association for his achievement.”

Al Merlo: his name he was given, his reputation he earned. Bravo e complimenti!
