The period between September 2004 and May 2005 has witnessed a time of growth and diversification for the Geological Society of Oman (GSO). The membership number has increased from 292 to 385, a total increase of 32%. In this period the GSO delivered a total number of thirteen monthly talks and organised six fieldtrips compared to twelve talks and five fieldtrips in the previous year. One of the highlights of the year was “Exploring Mars”, a talk that was held under the auspices of the Minister of Tourism, this was later followed by the traditional GSO-SPE yearly joint event. On the educational level, GSO provided a workshop on the geology of Oman for Geography teachers from the eastern province of Oman. Furthermore, GSO provided an introductory geology course for PDO A level geoscience scholars. At the international level, GSO successfully participated in organising the 24th IAS meeting of sedimentologists, which was held successfully at Sultan Qaboos University in January this year.
In addition to our conventional core activities, GSO has been proactive in several arenas, through its subcommittees. In an effort to preserve Oman’s unique geological treasures, the coming months will witness a presentation by the Geological Heritage and Conservation subcommittee on the vulnerability of the various and unique geological treasures of Oman to the concerned authorities.
On another front, the Geological Museum subcommittee has recently been invited by the Ministry of Tourism to submit a strategic proposal on the theme and contents of the Huta Cave geological museum. Furthermore, the Geotourism committee has been active in promoting geotours to numerous tour companies both locally and at an international level. This effort has been rewarded by the promotion of geological tours by local tour companies. With the help of GSO, these geotours are expected to commence in the next tourism season.
As we look to the future, activities of the upcoming GSO season are shaping up to hopefully meet your expectations. Fifteen talks and eight fieldtrips are planned for 2005-2006. In addition and as a mean to continually improve the communication between the GSO members and public/industries of interest in the Geoscience world, GSO has decided to launch the GSO Geoscience Directory.. Moreover, and in order to emphasise the importance of Geological Heritage and its Conservation, GSO has invited the Joint Nature Conservation Council of the UK (JNNC). During the visit, GSO will take advantage of the opportunity to seek advice and co-operation of the JNCC in the field of promoting geological heritage and Geoparks in Oman. GSO will also be on the organising committee of two international conferences. The Oil and Gas West Asia Conference (OGWA) that will take place in Muscat in the first quarter of next year and the Geo Arabia 2006. In Geo2006, GSO is planning to organise a workshop on the Natih Formation.
As it is apparent to all, GSO activities are not only on the rise but are also witnessing diversification. However, in order to follow through and sustain these activities, our society will require a stronger commitment in the society’s affairs on the part of our members and continuous support from our sponsors.
On behalf of GSO's Executive Committee

AL HAJAR Newsletter
Since its launch in January, 2004, , the Quarterly Newsletter of the GSO has gone from strength to strength. The Newsletter incorporates technical, business and leisure geoscience topics. Three issues have been published in the 2004-2005 year (July 2004, November 2004 and March 2005). A variety of articles have appeared in including reviews of GSO events (Lectures and Field Trips), profiles of oil companies operating in Oman, and technical articles written by both professional geoscientists and amateurs including:
Hydrocarbon potential offshore Oman.Snowball Earth.Geological exploration in Oman: the early years.Working and living experience in the Sultanates of Oman and Brunei.Sedimentary environments on Mars.Fahud Field, new seismic survey.Dinosaurs.

becoming a leading forum for g e o s c i e n c e n e w s a n d knowledge in Oman and internationally. The Newsletter has maintained its crisp and light b u t informative cutting edge style. H o w e v e r, the newsletter is entirely dependent on the support of the membership to submit articles for publication and the editorial committee encourages all GSO members to do so. John Willoughby, the editor for the last 12 months, has now left Oman and his position as GSO editor. We thank him for his efforts with . We would also like to thank all the companies that have sponsored in the previous year.
Currently at a very early, conceptual stage, there are ideas for more heavyweight publications from the GSO, either as Occassional Publications or Special Publications Series. Over the next twelve months proposals for such publications will be solicited from the membership body.

As a mean to continually improve the communication between the GSO members and other people/industries of interest in the Geoscience world, GSO has decided to launch the GSO Geoscience Directory. This directory is intended to be a home for geosciences and petroleum related information. It will mainly hold details of all the scientists and companies who are associated with geosciences that are based in Oman.
The GSO Geoscience Directory will be launched as a web-based directory in September 2005 and will be followed by a printed version in following years. We hope you find the directory useful in your daily business. Sponsors are kindly invited to support this initiative.

GSO Sub-Committees
Geological Museum “an idea that will
transfer the treasures inherited from the past to the present and explore the future”.
The GSO’s Geological Museum Sub Committee is to pursue the objective of capturing Oman’s geological marvels through an independent stand-alone geological museum that houses all the geological specimens from the different parts of Oman acquired by various associations and institutions. The museum will serve to promote geological awareness to the youth of the Sultanate; act as an attraction for tourists and as a safe heaven for irreplaceable geological specimens.
Acting on that goal, and to affirm its presence and gain professionalism, the geological museum committee is currently involved in designing and initiating the Al-Huta Cave geological museum which is part of the Al-Huta cave tourist development in Wilayat Al-Hamra. GSO will be the main technical institution and will present a visualization of the museum and provide the technical information to be displayed.
In addition, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the committee is involved in establishing the first scientific exploration centre in Oman which is due to open towards the end of this year. The centre will house a mini geological museum to provide support for basic education students, teachers and parents of the Sharqiya area and will display a variety of rock samples, dynamic models and posters.
Participation of local & international tour companies
GeoTourismIn January, 2006 the GSO Geotourism sub-
committee and the Geologists Association (GA) will jointly run a non-specialist, tourist-based geological field excursion in the Sultanate, a repeat of an excursion that the GA undertook in February 2003.
The itinerary will include a day studying the geology of the Muscat area, including the Grand Mosque, before travelling up the Batinah coast to Sohar and then passing inland through the mountains to Nizwa. The excursion will continue east along the mountains to Sur and the Wahiba Sands. Much of the geology will be dominated by the Semail Ophiolite, including the MoHo in Wadi Abyad and the 'GeoTimes' pillow lavas in Wadi Jizzi, but will also include Maastrichtian conglomerates, lower Tertairy shallow marine carbonates, hot springs, the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary and Precambrian diamictites. Not only will geology be seen on this excursion, but also some of the Sultanates cultural and historical sites will be visited including Nizwa Fort, Jabrin Castle, Beehive Tombs, falaj systems, the Sur dhow yard and the opportunity for turtle watching at Ras Al Junayz.

TOURS
Geological Heritage & Conservation Sub-Committee The geological heritage of Oman is a treasure that deserves to be looked after and shared. At a global scale the conservation of geological heritage is given top priority as stated during the United Nations Conference of Environment and Development (UNCED) in 2002. It is believed that “A good knowledge of geological heritage - and a healthy respect for all it represents - is an important factor in the holistic approach for sustainable development”. GSO sees as its mission for the current period to promote geological heritage and conservation with a view to aiding scientific endeavour and education for the public. GSO believes that the promotion of geological heritage is an important, recognised need that should be addressed.
There is nowhere in the world where the phrase “geological heritage” is more relevant than here, in Oman, where the diversity of Oman’s geology is interleaved with people’s day to day activities.
The sub-committee in its short span achieved the following:
Discussion with the Royal Oman Police is ongoing regarding rock and fossil smuggling. A presentation to ROP headquarter is scheduled in June, on why and how to address the issue.Collaboration with different societies and organization is ongoing on how to address the problem both locally and globally.
A list of sites of scientific interest has been compiled and will be submitted to different ministerial agencies.
A series of posters were presented during the IAS conference and GSO main events to raise awareness among members and non members, alike.
The committee undertook a series of field visits to address and select sites as potential Geoparks.
A series of talks addressing the issue have been presented or are scheduled for the near future, including: 'Nature Conservation in Oman' by Al i Al -Kiyumi, Director General of Environment, Ministry of Municipalities, E n v i r o n m e n t & Wa t e r R e s o u r c e s ; 'GeoConservation and GeoParks' by Tony Weighell of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (UK), and 'Preserving the Huqf' by Mike Odell, Petroleum Development Oman.
