Presidents Report 2012/2013

The season kicked off with the cross country and road running season last May and with increased participation state wide. This was, in part due to more fun runs added to the pro-gram and creating more exposure for athletics in the state. Salisbury only had two regis-tered runners for the winter season. The performance that stands out to me was the trail running championships. On a very wet day with Charlee Boxall covered head to toe in mud. I am looking forward to the numbers rising from two, to as many as ten this winter, to enable us to compete in relay events. The track season had an increase in numbers competing, as well with what I think was the highest attendance we have had as a club in several years at interclub 9 on a Sat-urday night with 28 athletes competing. The Club finished up the season winning the U/14 boys and U/18 women’s premier-ships, a stack of state medals and 5 open state champions over 8 events (Megan Szirom, Sam Russell, Charlee Boxall, Jarrod Sims and Jess Wedd). The club was also fortunate enough to have 9 junior national competitors. The Australian All Schools Championships was impressive for Salisbury with the only South Australian gold medallists being from Salisbury. They were Nikki Thompson, Lachlan Page and Alix Harlington. We have had some great additions to the club this season, Megan Szirom, a level 5 walks and distance running coach joining the club. Megan has brought with her some great young walkers and can hopefully help make the club stronger in the walks events again; Something which the club was renowned for not to long ago. We have been working closely with Athletics SA to start bringing country athletes into the sport. We both recognised a great pool of athletes in the Riverland region and we put a plan in place to provide a pathway for athletes in this region to make state teams. Through the work of then ASA development officer, Megan Szirom, we organised a coach-ing clinic at Glossop High School which was run by Megan, Warren Davey, Mel Leach, Josh Ware and Myself. We had about 30 athletes attend with positive reviews. In particular, athletes from the Mildura region were interested and through this we have linked up with the Sunraysia Academy of Sport (SAS) which is based in Mildura. They have started up an athletics program but required help with coaching development. Si-mon Moran has been working hard with the SAS in helping develop coaching strategies and programs. As a re-sult, there are now two coaches at SAS who have been made Salisbury Club coaches; they are Emily McClelland and Mr Singh. Emily and Mr Singh are also in contact with other coaches from our club who are able to help them with event specific training programs, technique and general support. Furthermore, we have now had 9 athletes from the Mildura region register with the club and

represent the club at the state relay championships and other events. Many of them will take

part in the up coming winter season.

Hopefully this relationship continues for many years and builds to help country athletes

reach there potential, strengthens Salisbury as a supportive, strong and large athletics club

and strengthen and build athletics in South Australia.

Our fundraising this year has consisted of a Bunnings BBQ on the 28th of April at Par-afield.

It is usually our biggest fundraiser of the year and I would like to thank everyone who

helped out. It requires a lot of work from a lot of people but the rewards are worth it. The

second fundraiser is currently under way with the SA community lottery which you can still

purchase tickets for.

The year was marred by the passing of Salisbury coach, committee member and life mem-

ber Ron Wasgind. Ron started coaching at Salisbury East Little Athletics when his children

started. Ron continued coaching up until the last 12 months, coaching many athletes who

were transitioning from Little Athletics and Senior Athletics. He was also a life member of

many coaching organisations including the Australian Track and Field Coaches Associa-

tion.

Finally I would like to thank the athletes, coaches, officials, parents, volunteers and the

committee who put in a tremendous amount of work this year.

Special thanks go to Ian Skewes for his work over the last two years as the secretary, he

will be sorely missed. Adrian Pounsett for his work with attaining grants and getting the

club up to start club regulations and Warren Davy for his willingness to help out the club in

anyway possible.

Registrar’s Report 2012/2013

This year our membership has grown again from the previous season. The summer sea-

son has finished and we have winter still ahead of us. We do not expect our numbers to

change much between now and September which will be the official end of the

2012/2013 season.

This season we have 75 members (compared to 64 in 2011/2012) who have registered

with Athletics South Australia and SAAC. The breakdown of these numbers is as follows:

Athletes who have registered for Athletics SA and the SAAC 64

Athletes who have registered only for SAAC 3

means they were registered with a little athletic club and also with Athletics SA and

Team Manager’s Report

Interclub Competition

With 2012-2013 being my first season as Team Manager, I was very impressed with the

performance of all the athletes at championship events and weekly Interclub com-

petitions. The dedication of athletes on a week to week basis when it came to people vol-

unteering for relay teams was very refreshing. 2012-2013 also saw the recruitment of a

number of athletes from Mildura and a partnership with the Sunraysia Academy of Sport.

This combined with the return of some familiar athletes has led to a healthy growth in

club membership and I look forward to seeing this trend continue.

State Relay Championships was the highlight of the season from my perspective. The

performances from all athletes were fantastic with many standout performances. It was

also the first major event in which the athletes from Mildura competed. They provided a

huge presence in the lower age groups with the majority of them competing above their

age group, which was also true of all athletes. A large number of athletes walked away

with medals, even some mixed teams who competed against full male teams. The State

Relay Championship teams and their results are shown below.

2012-2013 also saw several of our age groups winning their respective premierships de-

spite the large number of athletes in other clubs. The following age groups are the pre-

miers for 2012-2013; U/14 Men and U/18 Women. All other age groups should be com-

mended for their performances as well. This was a very successful season with great

performances all around and several key partnerships forged. I look forward to watching

this club grow and succeed in seasons to come.
