Your ability to obtain external funding is a common criterion for promotion and tenure. Grants promote vigorous research and scholarship by providing release time, travel funds, supplies, and student assistants' summer salaries. This session will provide keys for graduate students and new faculty members (particularly those at research universities) to secure more grant support.

Teaching Session I: Student-Centered Teaching - Designing Your Course Methods, Assignments and Assessments to Optimize the Student's Opportunity to Learn

Presiding:

Presenter: Edwin J. Barea-Rodriguez, Professor and Associate Dean for Student Success and Instructional Innovation, University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio, TX

M30212:15 p.m. 11 -

In many disciplines, the standard way to plan a course is instructor-centered. This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of Scientific Teaching, a student-centered pedagogical approach where both teaching and learning are designed with the same rigor as science itself. Originally introduced to teach undergraduate science courses, this method is now used in many non-science courses. Scientific Teaching involves the use of backward course design, active learning, diverse classroom assessment techniques, and Bloom's Taxonomy. This session will model and give participants an opportunity to practice a variety of classroom assessment techniques, and will demonstrate how the Scientific Teaching method benefits all students, particularly those from underrepresented minority groups.

Undergraduate Session I: What to Do After You Apply to Ensure Admission and Funding

Presiding: Deborah Northcross, Executive Director, TRIO Training, SAEOPP Center, Memphis, TN

Presenter: Donald Asher, Managing Partner, Asher Associates, Gerlach, NV

M10712:15 p.m. 11 -

Have you ever noticed that some students with a 4.0 GPA are rejected by graduate schools, while others with a 2.8 GPA may be admitted? The deciding factors are often the personal statement and pre-application communications. This session will provide specific tips on how to write an effective statement for application to graduate school, as well as how to reach out to specific mentors about what to do after you apply and how to win the funding dance. Even if you have already applied, this workshop can help you in this critical process.

The Gateway Grant Model: How to Support Applicants for Prestigious National Fellowships

Presiding:

Presenter: Michael Westrate, Director, Center for Research and Fellowships, , Villanova, PA

M1074 p.m.2:45 -

Program managers for prestigious fellowships and advisors at colleges and universities who assist students in the application process for these fellowships have discovered that many underrepresented and minority students and future faculty—applicants who are well qualified in education and experience—are underserved in application support. They agree that students could benefit from receiving strategic tips and support on how to present themselves in ways to make them more competitive to win a major fellowship, gain admission to graduate school, and land a quality position in their field. Without this support, URMs and future faculty are less likely to be successful in securing a fellowship—and are therefore less likely to gain admission to and to complete graduate school. However, URMs who receive this kind of support are even more likely to win than majority students. This session will describe efforts to provide this kind of training, and will reveal some of the best practices in application writing and support that have resulted from those efforts.

Presiding: Sheila Witherspoon, Associate Professor, Counselor Education, South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC

Presenter: Sheila Witherspoon, Associate Professor, Counselor Education, South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC

M1044 p.m.2:45 -

The growth of academic programs delivered in virtual settings have provided instructional opportunities at proprietary (for-profit) and “brick and mortar” institutions of higher education. As the number of people graduating with Ph.D.’s far outpaces the number of tenure-track positions available, many have accepted part-time and/or full time positions as online educators. Where the discussion of directing newly minted doctorates was once upon a time considered “taboo” we will explore the profession of the online educator, discuss scholarship opportunities within and/or beyond academe, and examine the implications of promoting the career of online educator for newly graduated doctorates of color.

Saturday, October 28, 2017Plenary Session II: Complexifying and Simplifying at the Same Time: Intersectionality as a Lens to Understand Mentoring Relationships

Presiding:

Presenter: Stacy Blake-Beard, Professor, Simmons School of Management, Boston, MA

Marquis Salon B9:30 a.m.8:15 -

Over the past five decades, we have seen a growing interest in the topic of mentoring. The research and practice on this very important developmental process have increased along with this interest. As the use of mentoring, both informally and formally, has grown, there has been a need to challenge and broaden our knowledge of the factors that may support effective mentoring, particularly across dimensions of difference. In this session, we are going to add to the extant knowledge base of what supports mentoring by exploring intersectionality as a tool. Intersectionality is a particularly powerful framework because it allows us to draw upon both the complexity and simplicity necessary to understand mentoring relationships. We will focus specifically on how the ability to recognize; welcome and value intersectionality may engender effective mentoring relationships. In this session, we will first define and explore the concept of intersectionality. What do we mean and what do we need to know about this concept? From there, Dr. Blake-Beard will use a participative exercise to allow attendees to deepen their understanding of their own intersectionality. Finally, we will apply the concept of intersectionality to mentoring, delving into how to leverage it to strengthen and support mentoring relationships.

The Gateway Grant Model: How to Support Applicants for Prestigious National Fellowships

Presiding:

Presenter: Michael Westrate, Director, Center for Research and Fellowships, , Villanova, PA

M1071 p.m.11:45 -
