A show passionate about pleasure boating

An exceptional event bringing together all of the most innovative revelations in the yachting industry, the show

invites the public at large to discover a unique offering of motor and sailing boats, yachts and superyachts that will rival each other again in creativity and luxury. If, as in a great many other sectors of business, the boat industry has been experiencing a slowdown these past few months, it has been confronting the new order with all its characteristic energy and passion.

2009, A SHOW FOCUSING ON THE LOVE OF PLEASURE BOATING Since 1977, the Show has succeed in winning acclaim among the world’s largest boat shows thanks to the undisputed wealth of the goods and services it exhibits, the quality of its visitors, and its resolutely international character in terms of visitors as well as exhibitors.A number of assets have contributed to this success: an extremely exhaustive offering of small and large vessels—both sail and motor--a brokerage section, the display of boats in water, sea trials, and more…

THE PURSUIT OF ExCELLENCE ANd INNOVATION HAS NEVER BEEN GREATER…The world of yachting has always been first and foremost a milieu for ardent boat lovers,” explains Eric de Saintdo, show manager of the Cannes International Boat and Yacht Show, an event that

has been developing within the sector for more than 10 years now. “The major boat builders are striving to come up with innovative solutions to meet the demands of a changing market: new hulls, new engine types, new types of hybrid engines that respond to the increased interest in environmental concerns, greater focus on design and quality of service… Today’s new economic order is pushing everyone to go one better in the pursuit of excellence. The entire sector knows that at a time when the cards are being dealt again, it is important to be even more demanding and strive towards greater economic performance.”

EUROPE’S LARGEST IN-WATER SHOW, THE mEETING PLACE OF A mAjOR ECONOmIC SECTORThe Cannes International Boat and Yacht Show is an exceptional showcase for yachting, an industry of great consequence in France. France is the world’s No. 1 builder of sailing boats and no. 4 builder of motor boats; pleasure boat sales amounted to 1.29 billion Euros in 2007 (up 10.4%), two-thirds of which were for export. The French pleasure boat industry numbers 5,000 c o m p a n i e s , which together g e n e r a t e 45,000 jobs and an annual turnover of 5 billion Euros. It serves a total of 4 million yachtsmen.

Trendsin the French marine industry

After experiencing a period of uninterrupted growth since the end of the 1990’s, the French marine industries have seen their situation become significantly strained starting autumn 2008, with a very abrupt slowdown in the number of orders being placed. World leader in

sailing boats and inflatable craft, and 4th in building motor boats, the French marine industries are adapting to cope with the situation and prepare, as best as possible, for the recovery, while holding on to their dominant positions.

YACHTING IN FRANCE IN 2008/2009

Despite the crisis, there is an interest in boating activities that remains strong and a real desire to sail. While there is a certain amount of waiting-and-seeing, there is still a great desire to sail, maintain one’s boat and renew its equipment. Never have the great yacht races attracted so many spectators (more than a million visitors at the start of the Vendée globe alone…) and the activities linked to water sports aroused such fascination: over 500,000 visitors at the “get Afloat Weekend”; more than 320,000 Web surfers at www.virtualregatta.com competing in the virtual Vendée globe. Similarly, numerous disciplines are seeing their number of members increase (canoeing / kayaking, kitesurfing, windsurfing…).

PLEASURE BOATING & SUSTAINABLE dEVELOPmENT

Aware of the challenges sustainable development creates for the future of yachting and water sports, the profession gave thought to the matter very early on. Consequently, the French Nautical Industries Federation initiated work in 2002 with a view to setting up, starting 2005, its Bateau Bleu Programme. The aim of the programme is to integrate concern for the environment throughout the lifecycle of a boat.

Before • The aim of the Prix Bateau Bleu is to support and encourage research and development of products, systems or concepts suited to pleasure boating and move toward greater protection of the environment;• At the same time, different work groups were formed under the aegis of the French Nautical Industries Federation to give careful thought to the tools and production processes.

While in use • By awarding the Bateau Bleu Label, the Federation assures the promotion of bateaux eco-friendly boats and equipment. The label is awarded to boats equipped with systems that permit efficient soiled-water management and to all equipment

that make it possible to avoid spills when refuelling. More than 5,000 “Blue” boats have been sold to date; • The Federation also endeavours to raise the awareness of yachtsmen to the necessity of adopting an eco-responsible behaviour. To this end it has carried out a wastewater information campaign to encourage yachtsmen to only use eco-friendly detergents and hygiene products, both on board and in everyday life. A good practices guide is also given out to everyone who buys a “Blue” labelled boat.

At the end of a boat’s life• At the start of 2009, the French Nautical industries Federation created in early 2009, the Association for eco responsible pleasure boating. Based in Caen, the association has as its mission to organise and run the setting up of the French network for dismantling and recycling pleasure craft that have reached the end of their useful lives (BPhu - Bateaux de Plaisance hors usage) and by extension, other waste disposal networks linked to all the water sports activities.
