RichardWilhelmcametoChinaasayoungmissionary,wherehesoonsetupamissionthatwentagainstconventionalexpectation.HedidnotbaptizeasingleChinese.InsteadhestrovetowardsanunderstandingofChinesethinking.ChinawasbeingbledtodeathbythecolonialpowersandRichardWilhelmexperiencedatfirsthandrevoltsagainstforeigners,thepassingoftheimperial-dynastiesandtheFirstWorldWar.Duringatimeofsuchturbulentupheaval,hesearchedrelentlesslyforthedeepesttruthsthatmightenablepeopletodealwiththechangesandtoshapetheirownlives.Heaccomplishedsomeofthegreatestworksoftranslationofthe20thcentury:CONFUCIUS,LAOTSE,otherclassicaltextsofDAOISMand,mostimportantly,theICHING,THEBOOKOFCHANGES.Thisbookhasservedasaninspirationformanyreaders.Eventoday,WilhelmisconsideredoneofthemostdistinguishedmediatorsofChinesecultureintheWest.

Inherdocumentary,thefilm-makerBettinaWilhelmgoesinsearchofthelifeandachievementsofhergrandfather,RichardWilhelm,byfollowinginhisfootstepsthroughChinaandEurope.ShecombineshistoricalexpositionwithpicturesofChinatodayinpursuitoftheessentialthemeofRichardWilhelm’slife:todiscoverhowthegreattruthsandwisdomofmankindcanoutlasthistoricalchangeandcontinuetoretaintheirrelevance.

RichardWilhelmwasfascinatedbytheculturalheritageoftheuniversalwisdomhediscoveredintheChineseclassics.WithhistranslationshetriedtoimparttheseChineseculturaltreasures,sothatEuropeandtheWestmightmeettogether,eyetoeyeandonapar.Wilhelm’sindefatigableeffortsandthefascinatingtextshemadeavailable,givethefilmalonglastingvibrancy.

BACKGROUND

WhilstWilhelm’stranslationofConfuciusandLaotsearosefromhisownpersonalquest,itwasaChinesescholarwhodrewhisattentiontotheIGING,THEBOOKOFCHANGES,oneofthemostcomplexworksofChinesecultureandphilosophy.Likeotherimperialmagistratesin1911afterthedeclineoftheempireandChina’stransformationintoarepublic,thescholarhadtakenrefugeintheGermanleasedterritoryofQingdao.

RichardWilhelmwasbothfascinatedandworriedbythetremendouschangestakingplaceinChinaandintheworldatlarge.LikeC.G.Jung,withwhomhewasfriendsfromthe1920s,hesearchedforuniversalwisdomthatcouldwithstandhistoricalchange.ItwasWilhelm’stranslationoftheIGing,transcribedfromGermanintoEnglish,whichleadtothewidecirculationintheWestofTheBookofChangesandtoitsbeingheldtobeoneofthegreatestandmostrelevantofclassicalChinesetexts.

BorninStuttgartin1873,RichardWilhelmwenttoQingdaoin1899asayoungmissionarywiththeEastAsiaMissionatatimewhentheterritorywasleasedtoGermany.Hefoundedaschoolthere,whichstillexiststodayandbearshisname,aswellasahospital.

HewasanunusualmissionaryforthroughouthisentirelifeheneverbaptizedasingleChinese.InsteadheallowedhimselftobeconvertedtoChinesewisdom.

Thetimeshelivedthroughwereturbulent.In1900theso-calledBoxerRebellionbrokeoutagainstforeignerswhohadcolonisedthecountry.Duringthisperiod,Wilhelmwasnomereobserver.WhenGermantroupsattackedChinesevillageshe,togetherwithaChinesedoctor,intervenedasnegotiatorthusavoidingfurtherbloodshed.

In1911heexperiencedatremendousturningpointinChinesehistorywhenthecountrybecamearepublicaftermorethantwothousandyearsofempire.DuringthefirstWorldWar,GermanyhadlostitsChinesecolonyandQingdaowasoccupiedbytheJapanese.Inthefaceofdireconditions,RichardWilhelmretainedhisironicsenseofhumour,enablinghimtoobserveeventsastheyunfoldedwithrelativeobjectivity.In1920hereturnedtoGermanyforashortperiod,wherehemetwithC.G.Jung,AlbertSchweizer,HermannHesseandCountKeyserling.OncemorehespenttwomoreyearsinChina,thistimenotasamissionarybutasscientificadvisortotheGermanembassyandavisitingprofessorattheBeida,theUniversityofBeijing.

In1924heassumedthefirstchairofSinologyattheUniversityofFrankfurt,wherehealsofoundedtheChinaInstitutetofurtherculturalexchangeandresearchintothemostprofoundtruthsthatunitedifferentculturesandperiodsoftime.HisfriendshipwithC.G.Jungdeepened,withwhomhepublishedthebook,THESECRETOFTHEGOLDENFLOWER.

RichardWilhelmdiedin1930attheageof56.HeisburiedatthegraveyardofBadBollinSwabia.Theeightsymbols,whichmakeupthecornerstoneoftheIChing,surroundhisgrave.

ForsometimetheIChinghasnotonlybeenknownbyexperts,butfromthe1970sinparticularbyabroaderpublicaswell.

TheIChingisoneoftheoldestbooksofmankind,whoseoraclewasconsultedbyChineseemperorssincemorethanthreethousandyearsagowheneverimportantdecisionshadtobemade.InthecourseofsucceedingcenturiesitwasaugmentedbytheflowerofChinesewisdomintheformofaddedcommentariesbygreatscholars.ThusitbecamethefundamentalphilosophicaltextofChineseculture.OnemightcomparethesignificanceoftheIChinginChinawiththatoftheBibleinChristiancultures.

IntheWestRichardWilhelm’stranslationoftheBookofChangesinfluencedawholegenerationduringthe1970s,whowereseekingadeeperunderstandingoflife.Itremainsa„perennial“,whichisreprintedoverandoveragain.

GERMAN-SPEAKING AREA

ThesalesofRichardWilhelm’stranslationpublishedbytheDiederichs,amountedto27editionsby1998withover500.000copies.SincethenthebigpublishinggroupHugendubelhaveboughttherightsandrepeatedlyreissuethegreatwork.FurthermoreHugendubelpublished36differentpublicationsabouttheIChingbetween1994and2006,manyofwhicharealreadyoutofprint.

Sincethecopy-righttotheWilhelmtranslationexpiredin2000,thenumberofeditionshasliterallyexploded.ThemostrenownedGermanpublishersoftheIChingaredtv,Herder,Heyne,Arkana/Goldmann,Lotus,Mosaik,Diogenes,Piper,Patmos,Anaconda.ManyotherpublicationsrelatingtotheIChinghavealsobeenissued,aswellasnewtranslations.Around100titlesaretobefoundinpubliclibraries.

ENGLISH-SPEAKING AREA

AstillhighercirculationhasbeenreachedbytheEnglisheditionofRichardWilhelm’sIChing,whosetranslationbyCaryF.BayneswasencouragedbyC.G.Jung.ThisversionismostwidelycirculatedintheUSA.TheIChingispublishedbysomeofthelargestpublishinghousesworldwidesuchasPenguinandRandomHouse,aswellasmanyminorpublishers.Englishspeakingpublishinghouseshavesoldmorethan12millioncopiesoftheIChing,excludingalargenumberofpublicationsrelatingtoit,plusaneverincreasingcirculationontheinternet.Onecandownload,amongothers,anIChing-softwarebaseduponRichardWilhelm’stranslation.

Duringtheyears1984-1991HenrikJägerstudiedSinology,JapanesestudiesandphilosophyinFreiburg,MunichandTaipei.From1993-2003hewasascientificassistantattheInstituteofSinologyinTrier.Between1990-2001hemademanylongersojournstoTaiwan,lastlyasvisitingprofessorattheDanjiang-University,Taipei.

Since2009hehasbeenworkingonaresearchproject“TheperceptionofConfucianismasaninitiatorofenlightenment“attheUniversityofHildesheim.
