OUR STORY 02

Jeremy Malman, then a PhD student, and his long-time

friend, Edon Gottlieb, who, at the time, was fully immersed

in a rigourous apprenticeship under the renowned

Michael Barragan, initiated the conceptual framework of

the program; the result of an unforgettably synergetic

exchange between the two where they, very thoughtfully,

described how motorcycles and motorcycle maintenance

had positively impacted their lives in unexpected ways.

Both had spent a great deal of time working with at-risk

youth and young offenders in varying capacities, coupled

with the complementary nature of their respective

professional backgrounds, they were encouraged to further

explore the potential utility of a motorcycle restoration

facility that exposed inexperienced, and marginalized

young people, to the art of vintage motorcycle restoration.

An exhaustive review of the research literature yielded

several compelling findings. Most startlingly however,

was the conspicuously neglected practice of vocational

mentorship. Instead, many widely relied upon therapeutic

strategies were more closely aligned with failure and

personal dissatisfaction than anything else.

Considering the global programmatic shortcomings of the

organizations expected to serve this extremely vulnerable

community of young people, seemingly couched in habit

and outdated theoretical paradigms, we vowed to build

something better.
