Immediate Release Sembawang Shipyard ’s Green Wave Environmental Care
Competition For Schools 2004 Award Presentation Ceremony
Singapore, November 29, 2004 - Sembawang Shipyard Private Limited,
a subsidiary of SembCorp Marine Ltd, is pleased to announce the
winners of Green Wave Environmental Care Competition for schools
2004 at the award presentation ceremony at Tudor Ballroom Room,
Goodwood Park Hotel.
Our Guest-of-Honour for this award ceremony is Mr Tharman
Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education. Sembawang Shipyard’s
“Green Wave” Environmental Care Project was launched in January
2003 and is an annual competition opened to all students at Primary,
Secondary, Junior Colleges / Centralised Institutes / Institute of
Technical Education (ITE) and Tertiary Institutions. This project targets
at students as we believe that if we can successfully inspire and
motivate young minds to think innovatively and adopt advanced
technologies on environmental protection and improvement, we are on
the right path towards making Singapore into a regional center for
environmental development and making our planet a better place for all.
This is the second year of the competition.

During the ceremony, a total of 21 awards were presented by Mr
Tharman Shanmugaratnam to the winning teams. (See Appendix 1 and
Appendix 2). Besides presenting the awards to the winners, Mr Tharman
Shanmugaratnam also jointly unveiled the Green Wave Environmental
Competition for 2005 with Mr Heng Chiang Gnee, Chairman of
Sembawang Shipyard Pte Ltd. (See Appendix 3). With the joint
sponsorship from BP Shipping and Shell Trading for the top prizes since
2004’s competition, participating teams and schools can continue to
expect more exciting and challenging competition next year. Winning

Winners of the top prizes at the JC/ITE/CI and Tertiary levels will also

be offered attachments with Sembawang Shipyard in divisions such as
Engineering, IT, Human Resources, Operations and Business.
The prize money for the Primary, Secondary and Junior
Colleges/Centralised Institutes and ITEs should be shared on a 60%-
40% basis with 60% of the prize award going to the School fund and the
remaining 40% to the student/students who are in the project team.
We are pleased to announce that a distinguished Advisory Panel will be set
up by the shipyard’s Schools Environment Committee by mid 2005. The panel
of advisors will be invited from key educational institutions, statutory boards,
reputable commercial firms actively involved in environmental care and
protection and our alliance partners. We will announce the list of advisors on
our dedicated website (www.sembship.com/greenwave) once the panel is
formed. The key objectives of the Advisory Panel will be to set direction,
enrich the competition and provide hands-on advice on organization of the
competition such that the competition gets better each year. We are confident
that with the guidance of the Advisory Panel, we will be able to achieve our
set target of introducing the Green Wave Competition to all students in the
ASEAN region by 2008. We truly see this as our contribution towards the
advancement of environmental care development in our part of the
world.

Project Summary
Our proposed Water Conservation Unit (WCU) is a wire-mesh structure that can be used for bus stops, pavilions or even covered walkways. When rainwater falls on the layers of wire-mesh that formed the roof, they would drip through but would eventually drop to the sides. Light would also go through. When the water drops to the side and as the structure is tilted, it would drop on a large pot of plants. To prevent the plant from drowning, the water would drip through a pipe attached to the pot and would be channeled into either a drain or a storage tank.

Project Summary
For water management, we thought about the underground reservoirs as there is limited land space in Singapore to build reservoirs. We could dig holes on the roads and cover the holes up with a metal cover with holes because metal is strong. There will be holes as the rainwater will flow down a pipe and it will lead the rainwater to an underground reservoir. The water will then be purified and then send to our homes to do washing, bathing and drinking but the water will have to be boiled just in case the water is a bit dirty. For air environment, we think that if there was a fan at the back of a car, it might reduce air pollution, but the motor has to be removed. The fan will need batteries and the fan must be strong enough to push the car forward and backward. There will be holes at the back of the car so that the wind will be able to push the car backward and forward. There is another fan behind the first fan because one is for reversing and the other fan is used for moving forward. There will be three buttons to control the speed of the car.

Project Summary
Phytoremediation is a safe and inexpensive means of removing toxic chemicals from the soil through the use of plants. According to research done, the brake and silver ferns have the ability to uptake arsenic. Arsenic is a proven human carcinogen. The purpose of our project is to do an extension of the project started in mid 2003 where silver ferns and brake ferns were cloned using tissue culture method. The focus is on increasing students’ awareness of arsenic in the soil due to usage of fertilizers and pesticides as well as the method of using hyperaccumulating plants such as ferns to remove them. The tissue culture method allows the students opportunities to see the purpose of advanced techniques in helping to combat pollutants.

Project Summary
Our project aims to create awareness among the public to keep our water clean from domestic waste. We will be focusing on how and what we can do as an individual to save our water as well as the understanding of how it affects people. By finding out the effects and causes of water pollution, we hope to achieve better awareness among public of the negative consequences that will result and thus, to improve the situation by educating them our ways to reduce water pollution. Our team came up with an interesting board game to promote and create awareness on water pollution. Together, hand in hand, we hope to save our Earth’s water.

Project Summary
Many of our household appliances are discarded in today’s “throw-away society”. These appliances contribute significantly to the increasing amount of waste generated everyday. Although a large proportion of discarded appliances are still functioning, people yearn for new products and willingly discard their obsolete products. This project reviews environmental problems raised by discarded household appliances, investigate the purchase, use and disposal of household appliances from the consumers’ and retailers’ perspectives, to provide quantitative research on product ownership, lifespan and routes of disposal of household appliances. This would help create a waste management plan that serves both consumers and retailers better.

Project Summary
We are doing a feasibility study on the idea of having a “rainwater collection tank”. The objective of this project is to help our school cut down on its high utility bills. Firstly, we felt that the amount and quality of rainwater collected in Singapore would suffice rainwater as an alternative source for our basic cleaning needs. We did an analysis on how feasible this idea is and the results were very encouraging. Re-education is also another important aspect to reduce demand for water. We have also showed a variety of activities as to how this can be achieved.

Project Summary
We aim to develop an environmental-friendly white-board marker by changing the chemical solvents in common white board markers into organic solvents by extracting certain parts of plants. We decided to embark on this project because our teachers and friends find the odour from the school white-board markers intolerable. Research also shows that xylene which is commonly used as a solvent in white-board markers is harmful to health. We also package our white-board markers with slogans to encourage re-cycling, re-using and reducing.

Project Summary
Students lose their handphones frequently and are not allowed to use a strap or pouch to secure their handphones in school. Hence, we designed a handphone securing device with a retractable string so that it can be kept in the pocket of student’s clothing. We make this device from used correction tape that many students are throwing away. The gears and casing of correction tape are used to make this device. The details of the device design and our findings on the cost of thrown away correction tape are detailed in our project.

Project Summary
The aim of the project is to shed light on the filtration properties of water hyacinth and its potential use for sewage treatment. We conducted an experiment with two aquariums using water hyacinth plants to filter impurities from the aquarium water and another control aquarium using a conventional mechanical filter. The level of dissolved ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and pH level of both tanks were tested and compared.

In this digital era, paper usage and demand remains a problem which lead to a series of environmental issues like deforesting and changing of landscaping. To help reduce paper consumption, our team has developed a prototype to sort out paper that are still reusable from printer and photocopy machine. We hope this effort will encourage the development of more environmental friendly gadget and promote public awareness in saving the earth’s natural resources.

Project Summary
We are designing a device to recover some energy from an aquarium tank. This device consists of a small turbine which is connected to a generator. Pumped water from the filter will drive the turbine. The generated energy will then power some bright LED which will provide some light to the aquarium tank. This is a clean air system and will not cause pollution.

Project Summary
Based on the present situation in our college, we have drawn up a more sustainable waste management system. We decided that the best way for any ‘waste management’ programme to be successful is through active participation. We tested out in our college by organizing an ‘Earth Week’ which was filled with many activities. From the results, we concluded that through awareness, waste management programme is more sustainable.

Project Summary
In the ballast (intake) water, there are many unwanted marine organism and particle. Transferring of those marine organism from one port to another port could cause harmful effects to the marine environment. The solid particles also cause sediment in the ballast tank. So we need to remove them before pumping them into the ballast tank. This project is a new separator device for ballast water system. It uses the theory of centrifugal force to remove larger solid from liquid, aiming to produce a practical which has high flow rate and higher efficiency for ballast water treatment. We have constructed a prototype of separator unit and assembled with other equipment.

Water saving - hot water shower system

Project Summary
Our survey has shown that 70% of people in Singapore who use hot water shower would let the cold water run off till it becomes warm before bathing. We estimated that an average of 1 litre of water would be wasted per usage due to this bad practice. Based on a conservative figure of one-tenth of Singapore’s 3.5 million population taking hot shower once per day, there will be approximately 280,000 litres of pure water running directly into drains each day. To totally eradicate this waste, our system will only allow water run out of the tap/shower when its temperature reaches the user’s selected set point.

Project Summary
For this Sembawang Shipyard’s Green Wave project competition, we demonstrated a conceptual design of a window cleaning system with steam cleaning technology to showcase cost effective means of water usage for washing and cleaning job. Using the Steam Cleaning technique will enable us to control water usage and reduce the splashing of dirty water during the cleaning process. This is in-line with ENV green objectives of Recycle, Reuse and Reduce.

Project Summary
The sink is a place where washing and food preparation takes place. Waste from washing and food preparation blocked the flow of water from draining off. For our project, we designed a device to catch the debris as the water flow down the drain pipe. The circular enclosed device has two internal strainers placed 180 degrees apart. One of the strainers is placed in the flow of the drain pipe and the other at the dry discharge pipe. The strainer in the water flow pipe will catch the debris. A manual external rod can be rotated to clear the debris at the dry discharge pipe.

Energy recovery from hot air-con exhaust

Project Summary
Standing near to the compressor of an air-conditioning unit, one can feel the intense heat being omitted. This heat energy is thus wasted. The project aims to reuse this energy to heat up water for bathing purposes. A prototype is fabricated to prove the feasibility of this energy-conservation idea. It is found that a small window air-conditioning unit cannot generate enough hot water to take a bath. However, air-con units in large buildings are able to do so. It is hope that this concept can be implemented in buildings where air-conditioning and hot water are needed simultaneously, e.g. hotels.

Project Summary
The Singapore Green Plan 2012 stresses the need to venture into exciting and untried areas to ensure Singapore’s sustainability. It aims to recycle at least 60% of the waste and explore the different sources of energy. The project aims to help Singapore in achieving its goals. The Domestic Biodigester reduces the organic waste of household by anaerobic action. The digesting system consists of 2 main components; waste disposer and the digester. The waste disposer will pulverize the organic waste into small particles and feed into the digester for anaerobic decomposition. The whole system should sit nicely under the sink.
