According to Dr. Hazrat Amin, the Program Manager of HealthNetTPO, “Experiences during the previous years revealed that promoting and supporting women to generate income and increase knowledge have a positive impact on the well-being of entire families and prove to be effective and sustainable; women act as mobilizers for their surroundings while encouraging their neighbors and acquaintances to start up small scale income generating and literacy programs. If culturally discriminatory practices could be minimized, women and girls in Afghanistan would not only be able to contribute to their family and community but also to rebuild the nation”. More than 3000 women have been directly targeted during the last program as implemented by HealthNetTPO in close collaboration with local partners AWEC, AWRC and ORCD. The 54 women from 9 provinces that participated in the Conference shared the success stories and challenges they faced during the implementation of their personally initiated micro- projects. “Investing in women and providing them supportive platforms can facilitate in resolving conflict and promoting peace”, said a women who is implementing a psychosocial education and holy Quran micro project.” According to the participants of a panel discussion, representing different organizations that address Women Empowerment, the way forward for the promotion of women rights in Afghanistan is increasing women’s educational, social and economic opportunities while discouraging harmful practices such as high dowries, early and forced marriages and while addressing violence against women and children. There is an urgent need to develop a clear roadmap for a more coordinated intervention strategy targeting not only women but communities at large.
