reparationsfor the PVP2004 Confer-

working hard to make the upcomingconference a success, a review of thePVP- 2003 would be appropriate now, asthe conference activities are still fresh inour minds, particularly regarding theTechnical Program.

Conference statistics reveal that we had147 sessions: 113 paper, 15 panel, ninetutorial, eight demonstration, one plenary, and one training. A total of 422 paperswere scheduled for presentation in thepaper sessions, with Tuesday being thebusiest day of the conference, having 147papers, followed by Monday (123),Thursday (95) and Wednesday (57). Atotal attendance of 3026 participants wasrecorded for the paper, panel, and tutorial

ence in La Jolla arewell on the way withfull swing of activi-ties. While we are

sessions. The averageattendancerate for thesesessionswas 22, withthe maximumnumberbeing 55.Sevensessions

were noted to have attendance in singledigits, and six of these sessions were onThursday (!).

The average number of papers persession was 3.73. This low averagesuggests that there was an excessivenumber of three-paper sessions. The lownumber of attendees during the Thursdaysessions is also of concern. Currently, our conferences are four-day events, andschedules and attendance should beplanned accordingly.

In my personal view as the TechnicalProgram Chair, the technical quality of theconference was very good. Participantevaluations of the conference supportedthis viewpoint. Evaluation of programcomponents: Sessions Technical Content,Presentation Quality, Session Conduct, and Student Paper Competition received

“Roast” of Outgoing Chair Howard Chung

attendee ratings of “excellent” to “good”.The remaining technical program elementsreceived “good” to “above average”ratings.

A marked improvement in PresentationQuality was indicated compared withprevious conferences. Kudos to the

PVPD Senators Preparing to“Roast” Howard Chung

presenters!! Also, the success of theStudent Paper Competition should berecognized, for it received the highestrating among all the technical categories.

Although not specifically categorized, the following needs to be mentioned here:not having the author and name index atthe end of the program booklet was adisappointment. Hopefully, we will haveenough input lead-time for the nextconference to resume the practice ofpublishing this index. On a more positivenote, the introduction of the Sessions andMeetings at a Glance sheet was a hit, receiving many complimentary remarks.Of course, we are planning to continuethis practice, and add other improvementsto make conference materials as helpful aspossible for the attendees.

As theTechnicalProgram Chair, Iwould like tothank theTechnicalProgramRepresenta-tives, SessionDevelopers,

and the Authors for their efforts in makingthe technical program of the PVP 2003Conference in Cleveland a success. Also, I would like to express my apprecia-tion and thanks to our Division ChairWilliam J. Bees for his guidance andleadership during the development of thetechnical program.

We look forward to seeing you all at thePVP 2004 Conference in La Jolla.

Adoes quite well inthis area. In the lastconferences, at leastone-third of PVPparticipants havecome from overseas.

Needless to say, the technical contentand the quality of PVP conferencesessions have really benefited from theoverseas participation.

In order to help recognise, encourageand promote multi-national participation,PVP has created position of InternationalCoordinator, reporting to the ExecutiveCommittee.

Our first initiative was to create the“Outstanding International SessionAward”, which aims at recognising (andpromoting) the development of trulymulti-national sessions. The OutstandingInternational Session is selected by acommittee of Technical Committee Chairs, and approved by the Honors Committee. This award was presented for the firsttime at PVP-2002 in Vancouver, then atPVP-2003 in Cleveland, and will bepresented again at PVP-2004 in La Jolla. We also keep statistics of the attendees’country of origin, and report these to theGeneral Committee.

Visibility is important: we suggested thatattendees of the conference-wide receptionwear ethnic/cultural garments signifyingtheir cultural heritage or interest, so thatthe event shows the multi-cultural aspectof the Conference, and countries orregions that are represented. Please do notforget to bring your material to La Jolla!

Other initiatives will be developed in thefuture. I ask all members of our PVP familyto forward their ideas and suggestions tome. I look forward to seeing all of you inLa Jolla. ([email protected]).

recent years. Fabrication efforts haverecently been very strong in the weldingand residual stress area. The M&FCommittee has several subcommitteesdealing with different aspects ofpressure vessels and piping: (1) Materi-als; (2) Fabrication; (3) Fracture; (4)Subcritical crack growth; and (5) Fitnessfor service.

At the 2003 PVP conference (Cleve-land, OH), the M&F Committee spon-sored 26 technical sessions (24 papersessions; 2 panel sessions) and 88papers, published in 3 volumes ofconference proceedings. Dr. P. S. Lam,the M&F Technical Program Representa-tive (TPR) for the 2003 PVP Conference, received a Certificate of Recognition forhis diligent efforts. In the 2004 PVPconference to be held at La Jolla, CA,the M&F Committee will have about 30technical sessions and 100 papers. TheM&F TPR for the 2004 PVP conferenceis Dr. Yong-Yi Wang (Tel: 614-459-3200;E-mail: [email protected]). Becauseof the multidisciplinary nature of thecommittee, several sessions are fre-quently organized in collaboration withthe Codes and Standards, ComputerTechnology, and Design and AnalysisCommittees.

Membership in the M&F Committeeis open to people with different disci-plines interested in fostering technicaldevelopments in the areas mentionedabove, as well as any other aspectsrelated to materials and fabrication inpressure vessels and piping. aspects of Operations, Applications, andComponents (OAC) that apply to the PVP.OAC is a dynamic organization, in whichnew ideas are encouraged and developed, and interdisciplinary activities arewelcome.

OAC has several subcommittees, all ofwhich deal with the different aspects ofpressure vessels and piping. Each yearOAC organizes and sponsors a number oftechnical sessions in, for example,Reliability and Safety; Qualification andTesting; Monitoring and Diagnostics;Toxic Substances, including the Trans-portation, Storage, and Disposal ofRadioactive Materials; Pumps and Valves;Operations and Maintenance; Piping andPipe Supports; Plant Life Extension;Pressure Vessels, Heat Exchangers, andStructures; and Codes and Standards. Our committee membership also hasstrong international representation, withsome of our subcommittees headed byinternational members.

For the 2004 PVP Conference, OAC hasorganized more than 35 technical ses-sions, with more than 125 papers, in fivevolumes of conference proceedings. Onthe international front, at least 16 coun-tries are represented, with one sessionhaving papers from Nigeria, Japan,Portugal and Egypt. OAC is also pleasedto announce the introduction of anentirely new topical area on the subject ofLaser Peening, a new process based onlaser technology, that replaces thehammer blows and bead streams used inthe past with short pulses of laser light. Itis also worth noting that, because of themultidisciplinary nature of our Committee,a number of OAC sessions are beingorganized in collaboration with other PVPTechnical Committees, such as ComputerTechnology (CT) and Fluid StructureInteractions (FSI).

As the incoming OAC Chair, I wouldlike to thank the outgoing CommitteeChair, Ike Ezekoye, and the outgoingCommittee Secretary, Karen McElhaneyfor their contributions over the pastyears. Special thanks are also due to theoutgoing OAC Technical ProgramRepresentative (TPR) for the 2003 PVPConference, Stephen Hensel. Steve willnot be leaving us, however, in that he hasagreed to assume the duties of theincoming Committee Secretary. Inaddition, Steve has also agreed to assumethe additional duties of Lead-TPR for asecond consecutive year.

At the 2003 PVP Technical CommitteeMeeting, OAC elected to adopt a two-year selection system, for which there is aLead-TPR and a Co-TPR for any givenConference year. Simply put, the Lead-TPR takes on the additional role ofmentoring the Co-TPR, so that the Co-TPR can more easily assume the duties ofthe Lead-TPR for the following year. Asnoted above, Steve Hensel has agreed toassume the duties of the Lead-TPR forPVP 2004, with Chris Alexander as the Co-TPR. Chris Alexander has agreed toassume the duties of the Lead-TPR for the2005 PVP Conference, with MansoorSanwarwalla as the Co-TPR. The Lead-TPR for PVP 2004, S. Hensel, can bereached at 803-952-3993, or by [email protected]. The Co-TPR forPVP 2004, C. Alexander, can be reached(281-955-2900, [email protected].)

seismic engineering as it relates to thedesign and operation of pressure vessels, piping systems and other structuralsystems and components. Encouragingparticipation in the annual ASMEPressure Vessels and Piping conferencehas proven to be an effective way toachieve the SETC’s chartered goal. Thecommittee organizes sessions coveringemerging research and applications in abroad range of topics including seismicdesign, modeling and analysis; seismicresponse qualification; damping andenergy dissipation; seismic isolation andvibration control; seismic testing andverification; high level response of pipingand vessels; seismic codes, standardsand criteria; seismic damping examinationand strength reinforcement; fluid andsolid interaction; and structural reliabilityand risk assessment.

Nine paper sessions, one panelsession, and two additional papersessions cosponsored with the Fluid-Structures Interaction (FSI) technicalcommittee were presented by the SETC atthe 2003 PVP Conference in Cleveland,Ohio. A total of 36 papers were publishedin the bound volume “Seismic Engineer-ing 2003” (PVP-466). Authors from NorthAmerica, Japan, China, and Europecontributed these fine papers. Manythanks are due to J. C. Chen for represent-ing the SETC as Technical ProgramRepresentative (TPR) and coordinatingthe committee’s sessions for the 2003 PVPConference.

In keeping with PVP Division bylaws, the SETC leadership was changed duringthe regularly scheduled committeemeeting held during the PVP Conferencein Cleveland. New SETC officers are:Chair, Mike Nitzel; Vice Chair, SatoshiFujita; and Secretary, Guy Roussel. Theoutgoing committee officers wereapplauded for their service during themeeting and, of particular note, during thePVP Conference awards luncheonoutgoing committee Chair, Kohei Suzuki, received special recognition for hisdedicated service to both the PVPDivision and the SETC.

Gerry Slagis, the SETC liaison to theJournal of Pressure Vessel Technology(JPVT) has been working on a specialissue of the JPVT devoted to seismictopics. This volume is planned for early2004.

Vernon Matzen is the SETC TPR for the

2004 PVP Conference. The SETC expectsto sponsor 26 sessions with topics suchas seismic issues in Europe, seismicstructural response, seismic baseisolation, linear and nonlinear dynamicresponse, seismic design of buried piping, seismic damping, seismic testing, newseismic structural components, andseismic evaluation of systems, structures, and components. A tutorial session onthe design by analysis of nuclear pipingpresented by Gerry Slagis will also besponsored by the SETC.

Seismic engineering is a crosscuttingdiscipline that interacts with many othertechnical specialties. Since seismic issuesare globally important, our membership isa truly international group that welcomesnew members. I encourage all who maybe interested in seismic issues and desiremore information to contact meat 208-526-1008 or via email [email protected].
