“I remember reading Kevin Kwan’sbook ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ ” Shum says.“I mean, the title really stands out andthere’s a curiosity that spikes. So readingthat, it was just an incredible story beyondthis world that he’s created. It drew youin because for me even, I’d never been toSingapore before I shot the film.“He really painted this picture that madeyou want to visit,” he continues, “madeyou want to eat the food that he was de-scribing and also made you want to meetthese characters, which the casting on isperfection, I think. Meeting the other ac-tors that are playing these characters,(they) just lifted off from the pages ... .And this year, as one of the nominationsfor best ensemble for a film, being a partof this cast is truly magnificent.”Though his participation has not yetbeen confirmed, Shum figures to reunitewith the cast for the film’s sequel, thescript for which is currently being written.But that is still months away. WINTER STORM SEASONJanuary is a good time to review Bayonne’s winter policies.In the event of snow, property owners and their agents are ob-ligated to shovel the snow. Create a path on the sidewalks, sothat pedestrians can walk. Shoveled snow should be placed onlawns and other places where people are not walking or driving.Please do not throw snow into the street. If ice forms on thesidewalk, you are required to remove it. Use salt or ice melt todo so. If ice removal is impractical, you must put sand on theice to protect pedestrians.If you are not at able to take care of shoveling, salting, or sand-ing your walk, please hire someone to do the job or makearrangements with other people to deal with the ice and snow onyour property. Non-resident owners have an obligation to handlethe ice and snow. They should designate Bayonne caretakers ifthey are not able to carry out their responsibilities in person. When it snows, Public Works vehicles will salt and plow thestreets. Please stay out of the way of these and other emergencyvehicles. The Board of Education and the Housing Authoritywill also take part in plowing and salting on their properties.Do not drive unless absolutely necessary during winter storms.
If you must drive, please do so with care and caution, because
winter storms increase the chances for acci-dents. If your vehicle gets stuck in the snowor ice in traffic, do not abandon your vehicle.Stay with your vehicle and call the PoliceDepartment for assistance at 201-858-6900. That’s a lot of ideas to pack in, especiallywhen you have two protagonists who jump off thescreen.”
Still, with Breslin and Hamill atits center, Alter also deems theproject “a master class in writing,We were able to include a lot ofshort excerpts of their writing,which sometimes can be difficultto do in a film ... but the way thiswas edited, you actually can hearthe words and learn somethingabout how to write.” WhileHamill is heard reading his ownprose, Breslin’s voice is re-cre-ated by actor Michael Rispoli
(“The Sopranos”).After Breslin’s stepdaughter told him several
years ago of Breslin’s then-failing health, Alterteamed with documentarians Block and Mc-Carthy to record interviews with Breslin andHamill “without really knowing what it might leadto. Then we started talking to celebrities who werehappy to give us interviews, because they thoughtthese guys were important and needed to be re-membered. And we found all this archival mate-rial, because they were on TV a lot, so this justkept getting better and better.”
