• 1 in 10 adult New Yorkers has

diabetes.

• 1 in 3 adults has prediabetes.

• Nearly 90% of adults living with

prediabetes don’t know they have it.

• Many adults will go 5-10 years

before being diagnosed

• Type 2 diabetes is on the rise in

children

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DIABETES?

• Type 1 Diabetes (formerly Juvenile Diabetes)

– Body does not make any insulin

• Type 2 Diabetes (formerly Adult Onset Diabetes)

– Disease in which the body either does not

make enough insulin or does not use

insulin properly

• Gestational

– The body does not use insulin properly

during pregnancy

• Pre-Diabetes

– Blood sugars are high but not high enough

to have diabetes

• 126 mg/dL or higher– A1C
