• A Good PM Program Should Be Constantly Evolving

▬Specification Changes▬Technology Changes▬Reactive to Problem Areas

Page 6: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• Effect of Spec / Tech Changes▬New components that require preventive

maintenance▬New components that eliminate the need for

preventive maintenance▬PM maintenance required by new systems &

technology▬Preventive / predictive maintenance information

provided by new technology

Page 7: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• Reacting to Problem Areas▬What part or component failure patterns are you

seeing that can be detected during the PM inspection?

▬Review road failures. Many are PM preventable▬Monitor unscheduled maintenance. What is

preventable?

Page 8: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• Reacting to Problem Areas▬Look at top 50 parts used other than PM

parts• Are these parts being inspected at PM time?• Should they be?• Could a specification change eliminate this

failure?• Is there a better choice for a replacement part?• Is there a better maintenance practice to

reduce these failures?

Page 9: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• Technician Involvement & Input▬Are there defects that they find that are NOT on

the inspection checklist?• Should they be added?

▬Are there items on the inspection list that are never or very rarely found defective?

• If not FHWA required, should they be removed?

Page 10: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• PM’s & 2011 Emissions

• The new technology will require Preventive Maintenance & Inspection

• Additional Maintenance & Inspections can be:▬Manufacturer Specific▬Application Specific▬Specification Specific

Page 11: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

• PM’s & 2011 Emissions

• Other Items to consider▬Air Driers▬Cabin Air Filters▬Diesel & Battery APU’s▬Coolant filters▬End of warranty period PM

• All Require Teamwork & Communication with Truck OEM’s & Component Manufacturers!

Page 17: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• PM Ergonomics▬Develop & list inspection items▬Group items to achieve good “PM flow”

• Pre PM inspection & walk around• In cab inspection & road test• Under hood inspection• Under chassis inspection• Special equipment• Bodies & lift gates• Post PM inspection & road test if required

Page 18: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• PM Ergonomics▬No one inspection form fits all

• Differ by vehicle type & application• Differ by vehicle and component manufacturer• Differ by operating environment and

geographic location▬TMC has a great form to work with▬Other Nationalease members are a great

resource!!

Page 19: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• PM Ergonomics• Shop Ergonomics

– Dedicated PM areas– Access to PM tools, equipment, & parts– Oil sampling equipment & procedures– Used oil evacuation & disposal– Used filter handling– Clean filtered fuel for suction type filters– Under vehicle access, lifting equipment

Page 20: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• PM Training & Certification

• Develop a PM Narrative▬Explain each inspection point and procedure in

detail▬ Include instructions on proper completion of

inspection forms▬ Include procedures for reporting needed follow up

repairs▬ This is a great training tool also

Page 21: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• PM Training & Certification

▬Technician Training & Certification• All Technicians performing PM inspections

must meet the certification as outlined in FMCSR Part 396.19

• In house certification is allowed• ASE PMI Certification is recommended• Must be Air Brake Inspector qualified as

outlined in FMCSR Part 396.25

Page 22: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011

Preventive Maintenance 2011

• PM Documentation▬Each vehicle must have documentation of

current FHWA Inspection within the past 12 months in compliance with FMCSA Part 396.17 (c) • Copy of last inspection report• Compliant PM sticker or decal

Page 23: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 2011
