27 FEBRUARY – 1 MARCHHOSTED BY BRITANNIA secondary
On behalf of the City of Vancouver, I would like to welcome all players, coaches, officials and families to the 2014 British Columbia Provincial Grade 9 Girls Basketball Championships. Parents, coaches and volunteers have long known what scientists and educators can now prove: that participation in youth sport is one of the best possible ways to prepare our children for the future. Vancouver's strong foundation of youth and amateur sport was built in our city by schools like yours. Congratulations to Britannia Secondary School for once again being selected to host this elite sporting event for teams that have qualified from all over the province. Enjoy the experience, play hard, display good sportsmanship and make your schools proud of you. Don’t forget to thank your coaches and parents for the support that they have given to you. Best of luck to all teams!
Yours truly,
mayor's message

Four years ago, Basketball BC was asked to accept the leadership of and responsibilities for the Grade 9 Girls Provincial Championships by the tournament’s founder Doug Binns. Our interest in accepting this challenge was to ensure the continuation of this event and the opportunities it presents for young female athletes. It is our hope that by offering a Provincial Championship at this age level; that school districts and leagues might be encouraged to continue, or begin to, offer teams at the grade nine level as part of their athletic programming. It is our further hope that the opportunity to participate in the great game of basketball will help foster and support the athletic and personal development of female athletes across BC.
We would like to thank Mitra Tshan, Mike Evans, Britannia Secondary School and the Richmond Oval who have worked diligently to ensure the great success of the Provincial Championships in 2014. They will undoubtedly offer the same tremendous energy and dedication to this year’s championships.
Finally, to the players taking part in this year’s Championships, your participation is a testament to your hard work, discipline and commitment. You have received a tremendous level of support from your coaches, parents and schools. I am sure that these attributes and the support you have received assist you during this Championship weekend and I wish all of you the best of luck.
Sincerely,
ross tomlinsontechnical director & manager for sport performance

My name is Geoff Taylor and I am the principal at Britannia Secondary School. We are both pleased and excited to be the official host of the 2014 Provincial Grade 9 Girls Basketball Championships. Britannia has a long and proud tradition of excellence in athletics and plans to be the best host ever in the history of this tournament. 106 years old, Britannia is the oldest secondary school in Vancouver. Our archives tell us that in 1915/1916 Britannia shared the Provincial Girls Basketball Championship with Victoria High School, my high school. (No, I was not attending Vic High at that time.)
A picture of Britannia’s 1919 Vancouver champions shows the five players on the team—remember there was a jump ball at centre after every basket! The girls look great in their bloomers!
Britannia is the only secondary school to have three provincial high school athletes of the year: Diane Murray (Volleyball 1967), Wayne Chow (Wrestling 1980) and Amber Hall (Basketball 1994). Diane played volleyball for Canada while still in high school! Amber won this award in grade 11 and then didn’t want to be nominated in grade 12 so that “another student could win it.”
Well known as a school for refugees and immigrants, Britannia’s proximity to the port meant we were often the first stop in the settlement process. We have always been a “world school” with multiculturalism and tolerance being the norms, and our school population usually reflects areas of the world where there is repression and conflict. Teams from Britannia are known for their never give-up tenacity which probably reflects an upbringing based on overcoming adversity. Our school was originally a senior “academic” high school for students arriving from Templeton Junior High, and this academic tradition remains strong, as Britannia’s outstanding International Baccalaureate Program usually competes for the best IB scores in the world.
Thank you for coming to the tournament, we wish you the best of luck.
britannia welcomes you!
