State general education standards

Standards are mandatory for anyone. Standards require the key objectives and tasks of general education programs, the minimum content. Student learning assessment principles and procedures Mandatory national tests.

ExaminationsStudents have to pass state diagnostic tests in3rd grade (Mathematics, Native language), 6th grade (Mathematics, Native language, Science) Tests are evaluated by teachers of the relevant subjectsStudents have to pass state exams in9th grade (Mathematics, Native language, English, History, Latvian).Exams are evaluated by the examination commission of the educational establishment Students have to pass minimum 4 state exams in11th/12th grade (Latvian, English, Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry/ History of Latvian and World History/Biology/ Informatics/ Geography.Exams are evaluated by reviewers (teachers and lecturers of higher educational establishments).

School subject OlympiadsPopular among students in Latvia.

One of the goals of Olympiads is to stimulate enthusiasm for different school subjects.There are Olympiads on different school subjects. The first stage is school Olympiads, The second – district ones, The third – state Olympiads. The best students of Latvia participate in state or International subject Olympiads.

Assessment of educational achievements

1st grade knowledge and skills in all subjects are assessed in a descriptive way. 2nd grade Latvian language, minority language and mathematics 10 point scale, other descriptive way.3rd grade Latvian language, minority language, English and mathematics 10 point scale, other descriptive way.Beginning from 4th grade pupils’ achievements in all subject areas are assessed in 10-point scale (1 – 10).


Recommended
