OUR HERITAGE

Dating back to 1924, a group of Westboro businessmen decided that Ottawa needed a different kind of company to offer funeral services to the National Capital Region. Led by John E. Cole, the group acquired a peaceful and scenic piece of property to establish a cemetery on Baseline Road, what was then the far outskirts of the Ottawa area. Pinecrest Cemetery, as it came to be named, was designed and opened for interments by 1926. Originally 20 acres, the site was later expanded by another 30 acres in 1956, as more people became interested in the area.

From the very beginning, we wanted to offer choice and quality. In 1962, the first Crematorium between Toronto and Montreal was added, as well as an Urn Garden and outdoor Niche Wall for cremated remains. Less than 10 years later, a second Crematorium and an indoor Columbarium Room were built to provide for increased cremation needs in the Ottawa area. A new administration building and a Chapel were built and dedicated in 1968, and in 1978, Eastern Ontario's first Garden Crypt Mausoleum was completed for those families preferring above-ground burial. Additions were completed in 1984 and 1990 offering both indoor and outdoor crypts. Always with a view to the future, the Coles went on to establish Highland Park Cemetery at Carp in 1978.

Laurie Cole

PRESIDENT AND FUNERAL DIRECTOR

The President and owner of Cole Funeral Services, Laurie is a proud fourth-generation direct descendant of John Cole, the founder of the family-owned Pinecrest Remembrance Services, which was established in 1924. Since graduating from the Humber College Funeral Service Education Program in 1997, Laurie has distinguished herself and her company in serving on the Board of Directors of the Cremation Association of North America. Recently, Laurie also has been busy with the opening of NeXT Restaurant and Banquet Facility in Stittsville.

Laurie is an involved and caring member of the Ottawa community. She has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Ottawa Kanata Sunrise since 2003, an organization that raises money for local and international charities to help people less fortunate than ourselves. Having grown up on a farm outside of Carleton Place, Laurie has always had a love of animals – and has even earned a college diploma as a veterinary technologist. Laurie enjoys spending time with her two children, working with her team, and helping the families that come to them in their time of need.

Melanie MacEwenMANAGING FUNERAL DIRECTOR

Melanie was born and raised in Ottawa. She graduated from St. Pius X High School and went on to become a licensed Funeral Director in 1995. A part of the Ottawa funeral services community throughout her career, she joined Cole Funeral Services in 2008. Melanie resides in Barrhaven with her husband Greg and her children William & Mallory.

Mark SteeleFUNERAL DIRECTOR

A graduate of the Humber College Funeral Service Education Program in 1987, Mark has been with Cole Funeral Services since 1999. He has served on the Board of Bereaved Families of Ottawa, has chaired the Health Promotion of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, West Ottawa Chapter, and was formerly a volunteer firefighter. A resident of North Gower, Mark is married to Debbie, a school teacher, who joins him in keeping up with his three active daughters, Melissa, Stephanie and Samantha. In his spare time, he referees minor football in the Ottawa area and is also an avid football and hockey fan.

Cynthia Giles-NicholsFUNERAL DIRECTOR

Cynthia was born and raised west of Almonte where she continues to live. She spends most of her time with her two adult daughters and her partner Steve. She attended Mount Royal University in Calgary and Humber College in Toronto. In 2013 she received her funeral director license. She is committed to serving families with compassion and professionalism.

FUNERAL DIRECTOR

A native and resident of Carleton Place, Emma joined our team in May 2014 and graduated from the Funeral Services Education program at Humber College. In her free time she enjoys making memories with friends and family as well as her beloved Chihuahua, Pipa, whom she adores. She prides herself on delivering kind, caring and compassionate support to each and every family she serves.

Robin FaderFUNERAL DIRECTOR

Originally from Nova Scotia, Robin has called Ottawa home since 1994. A graduate of both NSCC & Humber Colleges Funeral Service programs, she became a licensed Funeral Director in 2006. Robin joined Cole Funeral Services in 2015. She resides in Kemptville with her daughter Georgia.

JoAnne NygardFUNERAL DIRECTOR

Born and raised in Northwestern Ontario, JoAnne came to Cole Funeral Services in January 2019 with 25 years of funeral service experience, licensed as a Funeral Director in the Province of Ontario in 1995. JoAnne is the proud mother of two grown children. Spending time with family and friends, travelling and reading are her main interests.

Richard HewittFUNERAL DIRECTOR

Richard joined Cole Funeral Services in October2012. He has been licensed since 1981. He was born and raised in Perth and has lived and worked in Ottawa since 1980. Richard enjoys hunting, golfing and reading. Richard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team.

Devin HendersonFUNERAL DIRECTOR

Devin Henderson began working in the funeral industry at the age of 16, working with his parents at their family owned funeral home in Vankleek Hill. Devin attended Humber College and graduated from the Funeral Service Program in 2009. Devin still resides in Vankleek Hill where he also works as a Volunteer Firefighter for Champlain Township.

Melissa Wagner FUNERAL DIRECTOR

Melissa was born and raised in Dunrobin. She graduated from West Carleton High School and went on to Humber College to become a licensed funeral director in 2009. She brings professionalism and compassion to the families we serve. A mother of one daughter, Melissa enjoys spending time with family and friends.

ADVANCED PRE-PLANNING FUNERAL DIRECTOR

A graduate of the Humber College Funeral Service Education Program, class of 2001, Michelle was born and raised on a farm in Delhi, Ontario. In 2003, Michelle moved to the Ottawa area, where she resides with her daughters, Avery and Alana. In her spare time, she is an avid sports enthusiast, participating in softball, figure skating and teaching boxing and kick-boxing.

Kevin has been with Cole Funeral Services since 2008, but he has been part of the Cole Family since 1984, as he worked at our sister company, Pinecrest Remembrance Services for 17 years. Kevin lives with his wife, Juana, in Almonte, where he loves to play the guitar.

Geoff Walker

ASSOCIATE

Geoff began his funeral service career in Australia as a funeral director prior to moving to Toronto, where he continued to provide dedicated service to families as a Funeral Director Assistant for the past 25 years. He joined the Cole Funeral Services team in January 2019. Geoff has a love for Australian Rules Football. He started a league in Toronto that continues today throughout Ontario. His other passions are golf and traveling.

David Guardado

ASSOCIATE

David has been raised in Ottawa and joined the Cole Family in 2015. He takes great pride in helping families through the funeral process. While also working at our sister company, Pinecrest Remembrance Services, he is able to provide a complete follow through with the families we proudly serve at Cole Funeral Services, as well as families from the greater Ottawa area.

Completion and filing of all documents necessary to carry out the services and supplies requested, including, but not limited to, death registration, burial permit, coroner’s certificate for cremation, documentation necessary to ship the body out of the country and provision of 12 Proofs of Death Certificates issued by Cole Funeral Services. Our Proof of Death are normally accepted for most estate settlement purposes. In some circumstances a provincial Death Certificate will be necessary and is available from the Office of the Registrar General.

Shelter$285.00

Arrange shelter for the deceased, disinfection of equipment, staff protection in accordance with FBCSA requirements. Facilities used to prepare, embalm and shelter the body. (Up to two days). Removal of pacemaker or implant will be carried out by a licensed professional.

Licensed Funeral Director available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, initial contact, arrangement conference, coordination of details at the place of death, consultation, information, and responsibility for transfer details, arrangements for final disposition (not including fees for final disposition), recording government vital statistics, Licensing fees, secretarial duties, accounting and legal expenses, support staff, employee costs under government regulations, professional services required for the maintenance of a licensed Funeral Establishment.

Administration and clerical assistance — but not limited to — preparing all disbursement cheques, attend to the necessary details in connection with the arrangements for cremation or burial. Arrange for the attendance of coroner if required. Assist in developing media notices, providing clergy record.

Transportation$505.00

Transfer of the deceased from the place of death (within 50 km of our facility) to our facility using an unmarked van. An additional charge of $2.00/km will apply when the transfer is outside of 50 km of our facility one way.

Embalming is the process of replacing blood and bodily fluids with chemical preservatives. It is a process of sanitation, restoration and temporary preservation. Embalming is not legally required, but may be recommended to preserve the body between the time of death and the visitation or disposition of the deceased. Our professional funeral directors will make a recommendation based on the condition of the body and expected service needs. Ceremonial Preparation of Remains

Family involvement in bathing, dressing and placement of the remains into the casket. Five family members permitted. Max 1 hour

Necessary Disbursements will be added to the final

account at cost

Disbursements are items arranged for and possibly paid for on your behalf by us. You are expected to pay for these items at the time the account is due.

Coroner’s Fee: This is a fee charged by the coroner for issuing a certificate that allows cremation to take place. The fee is set by the Chief Coroner for Ontario.

Clergy Honorarium: This is an amount paid to the clergy for their services. In some cases the amount is set by the clergy, in others it is an amount to be determined by you.

Newspaper: These charges are for death notices placed in newspapers of your choice.

Municipal Death Registration Fee: This is a fee charged by the local municipality to register the death. The fee is set by the municipality and may vary.

Refundable Deposit for Cremated Remains: When human remains are to be cremated, a refundable deposit will be required. If the cremated remains are not claimed within one year of the cremation, the deposit may be used to inter the cremated remains in common ground. If the cremated remains are claimed before they are interred, the deposit will be returned.

Catering: Food provided for the purpose of a reception. Cost vary, depending on catering selections.

Organist/Musician Fee: This is an amount paid to the person performing these duties. The amount is set by the organist/musician.

Cemetery Fees: These fees are set by the cemetery of your choice.


FINANCING

At the time the arrangements are finalized a deposit of 50% must be applied to the funeral account.

The purchaser agrees to pay the amount owing within 30 days, after which interest will be calculated and charged in accordance with the terms of payment set out in this contract.

Payment Terms: Interest will be charged on any overdue amount at the rate of 2% per month (equivalent to 24% per annum) until the date of payment is made in full.

FUNDING

For your convenience, we offer two funding options when prepaying services or supplies. When prepaying, you pay for the services and supplies today and the money will be used to pay for the services and supplies when they are delivered at the time of death.

Trust: You may pay the money directly to us and we will place it in trust, where it will accrue interest until the contract is fulfilled (when the services and supplies are delivered) or the contract is cancelled.

Insurance: You may purchase an insurance contract where the proceeds of the insurance contract will be used to pay for the services or supplies at the time they are delivered or the contract is cancelled.

Additional information about our payment, financing and funding options are available upon request.

Pricing Guidelines

Pricing is based on consumption per glass or bottle. Glassware included. Minimum of one certified Smart Serve attendant is required for all events with alcohol service. A 15% gratuity based on the total invoice will be added. Invoice will follow after the event has taken place.
