PRIDEI John 2:15-17

What is Pride? Defined:

1. What does the Bible say about “pride..

“Pride, arrogance, haughtiness” ….Thayer says: Pride is the

characteristic of one who, with a swollen estimate of his own powers or merits, looks down on others and even treats them with insolence and contempt:”

You know any people like that? Do you like to be around folks like that? Are you filled with pride as described in

the Bible? What is the source of Pride? How does God look upon the sin? What examples in the Bible do we have

of people who were guilty of this sin? Do you think that some people will not

obey the gospel—because of being too proud!

What is the source of Pride?

. The World Ideas that are man-made!

I John 2:15-17

The Bible has nothing good to say about pride. It will cause you to suffer the same fate as the devil (I Tim. 3:6)

God speaks about those who are full of Pride!

I Sam. 2:3 Don’t talk so proudly! 3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not

arrogances come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

Prov. 8:13 God says he hates pride and perverse mouths!

13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Prov. 13:10 Pride produces strife!

10 Only by pride cometh contention (strife): but with the well advised is wisdom.

Prov. 15:25 What will the Lord do to the house of the proud?

 The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.

Prov.16:5 All who are proud are an abomination to the Lord!

5 Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

Prov. 21:4 Did you know that a haughty look, and a proud look are sin? 4 An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

Psalm 101:5 God will not endure the person who is haughty and has a proud heart.

5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.

Jesus our Lord teaches that “Pride” defilesa person!

Matt. 7:21-23

James says that God resists the proud! James 4:6

Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

God does not approve of pride…

and you can’t go to heaven if you are a prideful person!

What are some biblical examples of this sinof Pride? Ahithophel 2 Sam. 17:23

He was a counselor for David first, but when Absalom, David’s son,rebelled against his father, Ahithophel joined Absalom’s side. 1. He first advised Absalom to go into David’s harem. He did.

2. Then Ahithophel told Absalom to go after his father while David was weak so he could destroy him. A son told to kill his own Father! Absalom would not do that!.

3.What happened toAhithophel? 2 Sam. 17:23  And when Ahithophel saw that his

counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

Naaman.. A man that had leprosy! 2 KINGS 5:11FF

11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.

12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

He was told by the prophet of God what to do.. But he was enraged…He thought that was senseless .He turned away in a rage!!

He reconsidered: he emptied himself of pride and went and did what he was told. He was cleansed!!

Haman ..Esther 7:10

He was a very proud man! He had plotted and tried to destroy Mordecai and the Jews.. He was furious with Mordecai because Mordecai would not bow down to him..

His pride got him ending up being hung by the gallows he made to Hang Mordecai on!

Nebuchadnezzar…

Daniel 4:30-37

“Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?!

Daniel 4:30-37  The king spake, and said, Is not this great

Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?

31 While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.

32 And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.

33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.

34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:

Daniel:4 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as

nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.

37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

Herod Acts 12:20-23 The people kept shouting: “The voice of a god

and not of a man!” He was so lifted up with pride…he did not give God the Glory..and he was eaten by worms and died!

20 And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country.

21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

Jesus gives us an outstanding example ofa man full of pride!

Luke 18:9-14 The Pharisee “ I” The tax collector Lk. 18:13

“God, be merciful to me,

…the sinner!” God be merciful to Guy,

…the sinner!

Luke 18:9-14

9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: The Pharisee

10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

The Publican 13 And the publican, standing afar

off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Pride is destructive. Pride causes huge sin.

How can we stay away from the sin of Pride?

25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Jesus teaches us : In order to overcome the sin of Pride, be humble! And Peter says:

I Pet.5:6 Humble yourselves …Something we must do!

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Paul teaches us about this Sin of Pride! Rom. 12:3 Don’t think of yourself more

highly than you ought To think… All of us in God’s kingdom have a

place. Be willing to serve! Elders, Preachers, Deacons, Teachers.

Every person in God’s church has his place to function to Please God. To lead singing, to serve as a preacher, elder..etc. Even Elders are warned about pride “I Tim.3:6 “not a novice,Lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation As the devil”!

A warning ! I Tim. 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and

consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the

doctrine which is according to godliness;4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

Warning to the Rich

Matt. 19:16

Don’t let your wealth be a means of causing you to fall Away from God. Use your riches for the service of God….Share with others!

Young Ruler: Where are our riches? Not on earth, but in Heaven. Matt.6:19-21

In Conclusion: What the Bible says on any subject is

right! Never wrong! And, certainly about Pride..God has

spoken. Let us listen To what He says and seek to obey Him. Did not Jesus do this? Heb. 5:8-9 Therefore, let us heed the words of

Paul in Phil. 2:1 “Let this mind be in you which was also

in Christ Jesus!”

Remember: Proverbs 16:18

Pride goeth before destruction, and

an haughty spirit before a fall.

Isa.57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty

One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
