EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR B) 5th August, 2018 We support the endeavours of the Royal Commission to bring healing to the victims of abuse. Church's website: www.facingthetruth.org.au Reflection: There is a food theme running through today's readings. The first reading relates the story of the feeding of the hungry Israelites in the desert with quails and manna. The Gospel, which comes shortly after John's telling of the feeding of the five thousand, has those same people coming seeking further nourishment. There is also a thread which suggests a lack of faith and trust. The Israelites in the desert grumbled, fearing they would die of hunger. And those so recently and miraculously fed by just a few loaves and fish come looking for Jesus in a way which suggests they are seeking once again to fill their bellies. Jesus, however, deflects their request for worldly food, and instead invites them to trust in Him to feed more than just their bodies. It is an invitation to faith which he also extends to us, to believe He is the bread which will nourish and sustain our souls. ALL WELCOME "The Cafarella families would like to thank all the organisers, the entertainer, the speakers and the WHOLE team of helpers and parishioners who presented such a memorable afternoon for Fr Clem on the occasion of his 60 th Anniversary. It was a lovely tribute to him and we appreciate a lot of effort and time has been put into organising the event. We loved the way Fr Clems become known to you all in his 7 years in the Parish especially by way of the HALLELUJAH tribute and CRUISIN' DOWN THE RIVER song which certainly encapsulated his personality and interests. Thank you also for the warm welcome extended to our family. It was very memorable for us all and we commend his ministering and dedication to the Church and the many people whose lives he has touched over the 60 years, not the least his 7 years of "retirement" at St Catherine's." Fr Clems 60 th Celebration, it could be said was a resounding success. It was wonderful to see so many of his fellow priests, Parishioners, O.L.S.H. Sisters, and a large representation of his family. The great mix from all three Communities and a buzz of conversation ensued. Two extremely clever songs written in honour of Father were well received. Our sincerest thanks to all the fantastic volunteers who worked so hard before, during and after the event. This is what binds us together. Well done, one and all. I have it on good authority, that despite initial reluctance, Fr Clem really did greatly enjoy this occasion. Congratulations Fr. Thank you to all those generous parishioners who have contributed to the annual St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Your donations are essential for our conferences to support the needy families and singles in this community. We also thank those parishioners who often buy extra groceries and leave them at the Piety Stall throughout the year.

The motto ‘Praedicamus Christum Crucifixum’ is a

quotation from the Apostle Paul’s first epistle to the

Corinthians (1Cor1.23), and can be translated as

“We proclaim a crucified Christ.’

The inverted Latin Cross symbolises the Bishop’s

nominal patron, the Apostle Peter and the stars reflect

the Southern Cross, which shines out over the Great

South land of the Holy Spirit. The lion and the unicorn

respectively symbolise the mind and the heart of love.

THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL – John 6: 24-35

First Anniversary occurring at this time:

When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they found him on the other side, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ Jesus answered: ‘I tell you most solemnly, you are not looking for me because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat. Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life, the kind of food the Son of Man is offering you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.’ Then they said to him, ‘What must we do if we are to do the works that God wants?’ Jesus gave them this answer, ‘This is working for God: you must believe in the one he has sent.’ So they said, ‘What sign will you give to show us that we should believe in you? What work will you do? Our fathers had manna to eat in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ Jesus answered: ‘I tell you most solemnly, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven, it is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread; for the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ ‘Sir,’ they said ‘give us that bread always.’ Jesus answered: ‘I am the bread of life.

He who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst.’
