Krzysztof Jablonski (01738 636589) For the Greater Glory of God Priests for Scotland A LIFE WORTH LIVING I t’s the middle of win- ter; it’s bitterly cold; it’s so tempting to hide away and just go through the motions. However, Lent begins on Wednes- day. Lent is a great anti- dote for the temptation to go through the motions and do the bare minimum in our work, school, mar- riage, parenting, ministry, etc. The Church gives us Lent to break through the drudgery of life (see Jb 7:1). There can be no go- ing through the motions at the foot of the cross. When we place ourselves in the glory of God’s presence in heaven, there is also no minimalism and no go- ing through the motions. God’s glory is one of the greatest motivating factors in this life. We Christians do all “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,” for the greater glory of God. When we are concerned for the glory of God, we do not take a day off. When we relax, get skep- tical, or express bitterness or unforgiveness, or com- mit sins, we do not give God glory in the sight of others (e.g. Nm 20:12). We might interact with someone for the first and only time today, and our actions and attitudes might influence them to decide for or against the Lord. The great baseball player, Joe DiMaggio, was once asked why he played so hard, even in meaningless games. He replied: “There might be a boy in the stands who may only see me play this one time. He deserves to see my best, so I always give my best.” How much more must we, who serve Almighty God, do our very best at all times, for the glory of God is at stake! Help families like theLangs from Cambodia stand up for their rightsandprotectwhat’stheirs.ThisLent,we’refocus-
ing our attention on thecountryofCambodiaandthethousandsoffamiliesthat, with your support,arebeinghelpedtostandup for their rights andwork their way out ofpoverty.The livelihoods of
many Cambodians are under threat from illegalfishing in their waters.Dynamiteandelectrocu-tion have been used bycriminalgangstokillandcapturefish,leadingtoadrasticreductioninstockin some areas. Workingwith our local partner,Development and Part-nershipinAction(DPA),we’rehelpingvulnerablecommunities in StungTreng province to standup for their rights andprotect their waters andforestsfromthethreatofillegal fishing, loggingandcorporateland-grabs.For the poorest, we’realsoprovidingseedsandfarming tools so theycangrowmorefood,andhelpingtoprovidebetteraccesstocleanwaterforvillages and schools, to
pend on fishing andfarmingtosurvive.Theywere badly affected byillegal fishing by crimi-nal gangs, resulting in a50%drop infish stocks.As a result, they foundit much harder to catchenough fish to feed thefamily. With help fromSCIAF and DPA theLangs became members of a Community Fish-ing Association, whichworks with police andthe local authorities toorganinseregularfishingpatrols toprevent illegalfishing.They told us, “Weget
more fish now. Before,peopleused todynamitethe fish. I saw for my-self the people makingdynamite explosions inthe river. I saw the fishdie and float to the top.WhenIsawitIwasreal-lyangryasIfelthelplessbecause Iwasn’t able tostopthem.”“Now we can use the
moneytopayforschoolfees, uniforms and clothes for the family.WewanttosaythankyoutothepeopleofScotlandwho have provided thissupportforus.”
