Cher Oliviu,

The idea of organizing The International Conference on Onomastics: Name and Naming. “Multiethnic Connections in Anthroponymy” occurred back in2008, when the undersigned author of this short presentation submitted a funding application for an exploratory research project, in the CNCSIScompetition (program PN II, IDEI). The objectives of the winning grant – Multiethnic Connections in the Anthroponymy of Maramureş, a CentralEuropean Area (code 251, contract number 838/2009) – included the organization of an international scientific event that would explore the issuesof name and naming in anthroponymy, toponymy, and in fields related to onomastics.

We believe that the conference which took place in September 19-21, 2011, in Baia Mare, proved itself a remarkable endeavour in the field ofRomanian onomastics, in particular, and in that of international onomastics, in general. The names gathered within this volume are eloquent enoughto support our statement.

Most of the participants represented highly esteemed universities or research institutes of the Romanian Academy: Marius Alexianu – Iași, AnitaAndreica – Baia Mare, Lazăr Avram – Ploiești, Minodora Barbul – Baia Mare, Rodica Biriș – Arad, Răzvan Bran – Bucharest, Alina Bugheșiu – BaiaMare (+ Timișoara), Daniela Butnaru – Iași, Gheorghe Calcan – Ploiești, Adrian Chircu – Cluj-Napoca, Gheorghe Chivu – Bucharest, NicoletaCîmpian – Baia Mare, Dana Covaci – Cluj-Napoca, Mihai Crudu – Bucharest (+ Suceava), Carmen Dărăbuș – Baia Mare (+ Novi Sad, Serbia),Andreea Dumitrescu – Baia Mare, Daiana Felecan – Baia Mare, Nicolae Felecan – Baia Mare, Oliviu Felecan – Baia Mare, Doina Filimon Doroftei –Bucharest, Gheorghe Glodeanu – Baia Mare, Octavian Gordon – Bucharest, Mihaela Grigorean – Negrești-Oaș, Sigrid Haldenwang – Sibiu, MonicaAdriana Ionescu – Bucharest, Izabella Krizsanovszki – Baia Mare, Margareta Manu Magda – Bucharest, Iulia Mărgărit – Bucharest, Adelina Mihali –Baia Mare (+ Timișoara), Mihaela Munteanu Siserman – Baia Mare, Maria-Cătălina Muraru – Bucharest, Teodor Oancă – Craiova, Adrian Oțoiu –Baia Mare, Marcela Oțoiu – Baia Mare, Claudia Gabriela Pisoschi – Craiova, Silvia Pitiriciu – Craiova, Raluca Pop-Chendea – Cluj-Napoca, Ana-MariaPrisăcaru – Iași, Ileana-Maria Ratcu – Bucharest, Georgeta Rus – Baia Mare, Mădălina Strechie – Craiova, Dana-Luminița Teleoacă – Bucharest, AidaTodi – Constanța, Dragoș Vlad Topală – Craiova, Rodica-Cristina Țurcanu – Baia Mare, Theodor Ulieriu-Rostas – Bucharest (+ Paris, France),Ioana Vintilă-Rădulescu – Bucharest, Camelia Zăbavă – Craiova.

There were also specialists from ten other countries, adding up to over a third of the final number of participants: Davide Astori – Italy, EmiliCasanova – Spain, Jérémie Delorme – Belgium, Inga Druță – the Republic of Moldova, Anatol Eremia – the Republic of Moldova, Anna Fornalczyk,Aleksandra Biela-Wołońciej – Poland, Luca Gatti – Italy, Alfonso Germani – Italy, Ivana Janjić – Serbia, Erika Kegyes – Hungary, Antonio Mallozzi –Italy, Bertie Neethling – South Africa, Thierry Ponchon – France, Virginia Popović – Serbia, Michel Rateau – France, Viorica Răileanu – the Republicof Moldova, Igor Skouratov, Kevin Bacquet – Russia, Laura Spăriosu – Serbia, Bernd Spillner – Germany, Boris Stojkovski – Serbia, Elena Ungureanu– the Republic of Moldova, Rodika Ursulesku-Miličić – Serbia, Willy Van Langendonck – Belgium, Vladimir Zagaevschi – the Republic of Moldova.

The papers delivered on the occasion of the conference were divided into three large sections (anthroponomastics, toponomastics and names insociety), so that the all the fields of interests explored by the researchers could be covered. Throughout this volume, we have kept, to the extent towhich it was possible, the same distribution of the materials, with the note that the studies were organized in subchapters, according to the contentthey conveyed: forenames, historical anthroponymy, surnames, unconventional anthroponyms (nicknames, bynames, appellatives, hypocoristics, user names), literary onomastics, toponyms, hydronyms, oikonyms, hodonyms, the theory of names, trade names, other names (zoonyms etc.).Within each chapter, the studies (34 in Romanian, 17 in French, 8 in English, 7 in German, and 4 in Italian) were arranged alphabetically, accordingto the authors’ surnames.
