What’s on your mind?Teaching and the needs of children are always changing but at Oxford we change with you… It’s our aim to evolve our resources in order that they stay fresh and relevant for the teachers and pupils of today. When we asked you what was on your mind, here’s what you told us…

“Raising our boys’ achievement means improved standards for our school.”

It is well-known that boys are less enthusiastic about reading than girls but given access to the right kind of content, design and structure we believe that they can do just as well as the girls. Project X, for example, has been specially developed to motivate even the most reluctant of boys and raise achievement.

Motivate our boys

“Children have changed and so have resources.”There’s no doubt that times have changed. Today’s children love highly-visual, interactive resources, along with characters and storylines that they can relate to. And that’s just what we give them! Taking the best of what we know works and combining it with the best modern technology can offer, plus some of today’s most popular characters and authors, we are in a perfect position to take children into the future.

Engage the Digital Age

on“Getting our children reading in the early years

is critical.”Phonics is one of the most effective ways to teach children to read, but resources have to be relevant for today’s child. We provide teachers with a range of easy-to-use phonics resources that capture children’s imaginations from the start and make them want to read more! Take a look at the exciting new phonics resources in Oxford Reading Tree, Project X and Read Write Inc. and see what works best in your classroom.

“Our children are full of stories but how best to get them down on paper?”All children have a tale to tell but when it comes to writing, many find it tricky to convert what’s in their head onto paper. Teaching children how to tell a story is often the best way to start. With all our resources you can give them the skills to create a story, unlock their imaginations, and watch their writing take shape.

Put it in writing...

The benefits of raising boys’ achievements

It is a well known fact that boys’ reading and writing test scores lag significantly behind girls’ from the Early Years Foundation Stage profile up to Key Stage 2 SATS. By addressing boys within your school development plan and engaging your boys at an early age, your whole school can benefit.

3 The single most effective way to raise English SATs scores

3 Reducing the need for costly catch-up programmes

3 Reducing the likelihood of poor behaviour or bullying

3 Increasing airtime for girls

3 Satisfying a key objective for OFSTED inspections

Gender difference in reading achievements:lEngland — boys are 19%

behind girls

lScotland — boys are 22% behind girls

Facts...“A very high proportion of children with very poor literacy skills are boys.” The Long Term Cost of Literacy Difficulties, KPMG Foundation, 2006

“Boys are twice as likely to have dyslexia.” Dr Julia Carroll, University of Warwick Study, 2005

“Boys are four times more likely to be identified as having a behavioural, emotional or social difficulty.” Gender and Education, DCSF, 2008

“There is a direct link between pupil (especially male) attainment in English at 7 and the likelihood of them bullying or being bullied by age 10.”Institute of Education Report, 2008

Gary Wilson, one of the leading authorities on raising boys’ achievement, is working together with Oxford University Press on their Getting the Best out of Boys campaign — to help raise boys’ achievement. Gary has written several books and publications on this area — including Breaking Through Barriers to Boys’ UnderAchievement.

What about the girls? The Project X resources and teaching techniques work wonderfully well with girls too. Schools that currently use Project X are reporting back just how much the girls love the characters and stories. The more we can get boys back on task, the more we can ensure they don’t disrupt and defocus lessons — which is great for girls.

Introducing “micro travel”

In Years 5/P6 to 6/P7 the characters (now older) take on challenging missions as Team X, micro-agents equipped with incredible micro-machines. They encounter the sinister Collector — whose aim is to shrink and steal valuable objects for his snow-globe collection. These junior novels use richer language to extend the children’s comprehension and reading stamina.

The Collector

The action-packed core stories motivate C21st kids to read (especially boys!)

Then other thematically-linked books gently draw them into other genres and styles of writing.

Four everyday friends discover four amazing watches that allow them to shrink down to micro-size.

Early books focus on simple situations based in this new giant world. Linked to Letters and Sounds for clear phonic progression.

In Years 2/P3 to 4/P5, the books grow in sophistication. The children discover the secret behind the watches — and the evil Dr X’s plot to shrink the world.

A boy in Year 2 was not interested in joining in any of the lessons and appeared permanently bored. When he saw the CD-Rom it instantly grabbed his attention; he became involved in what was happening on the screen and wanted to tell anyone who would listen to him about the plot and the stories. Now this boy wants to read the stories and is participating in class. His teacher is amazed at the transformation. In a nutshell, his face lit up, his attention was gained, Project X had the WOW factor for him! Mrs Hael, Literacy Coordinator, Guiseley Infants, Leeds

Ruth Miskin is one of the UK’s leading authorities on teaching children to read. She has had many years experience as a teacher, headteacher, teacher-trainer and consultant in synthetic phonics, working with primary and secondary schools throughout the UK and with children from all backgrounds.Over the last ten years, all her time has been devoted todeveloping Read Write Inc. Her belief that every child can, and must, learn to read is at the heart of this programme.

‘‘I know they love it, they actually love the programme. It doesn’t just help with Literacy because you can go away and you take this knowledge and apply it. You see it working in history and even maths. It’s giving them a whole approach, it addresses problems they have throughout the whole curriculum; it isn’t just literacy, it’s everything they do.’’Year 5 teacher, St Georges Primary School, Kidderminster

Success in reading and writing for all your upper juniorsRead Write Inc. Comprehension Plus teaches 9–11 year old pupils how to read texts with a deep level of comprehension and turns them into really fluent writers.

l Fiction and Non-fiction texts are linked by ‘Big Questions’ which relate the text to the children’s own experience

l Step-by-step writing activities give all children the chance to succeed

l Inspiring anthologies contain complete short stories, poems and Non-fiction texts by well-known children’s authors such as Michael Morpurgo, Jeremy Strong and Roger McGough

l Integral easy to use software makes teaching dynamic and interactive

Teaching Cycle for Read Write Inc. Comprehension Plus

1 The texts are studied at three levels, showing how an author builds up layers of meaning. Once children are familiar with a text, lively activities help them explore it from different perspectives.

2 A daily ‘Big Question’ is raised to develop children’s skills of argument and discussion.

3 Writing is developed out of the reading, as children are taken through the clear steps: read a story, build a story and then write a story or a non-fiction text.

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start

Case Study of Read Write Inc. Fresh Startat Matthew Humberstone CE School Written by Julia Hepburn, Head of Learning SupportPupils have found the programme fun, stimulating and rewarding, giving them a feeling of confidence never previously achieved. Members of staff have also enjoyed delivering and taking part in the programme. In the first 6 month period the average reading age of Year 7 pupils improved by 14 months, and the spelling by 11.5 months. One pupil improved her reading score by 26 months. We will expand the programme to benefit more pupils from September 2009. Knowing of the dramatic success of this year’s students will encourage others.
