Samuel had been playing the piano for two years. He loved music
but no matter how hard he tried, he could not play well.
Six months before sitting for the grade one piano examination,
Samuel practised day and night. However, he kept getting the tempo
mixed up. When he saw ‘allegro’, he slowed down and when he saw
‘adagio’, he played quickly. His teacher was exasperated with him.
She was certain that he would fail his examination.
Samuel was determined not to disappoint his teacher and his
parents. He also wanted to fulfil his dream. He had to pass the grade
one examination. Only then would he be more confident about his
playing skills. He longed to become a concert pianist. Samuel stared
at the three pieces that he had to play. He told himself that he had to
get it right before going to bed.

That day, Samuel practised late into the night. By morning, he
was feeling a little under the weather. He was overcome with fatigue
and his fingers ached but he had finally mastered the three pieces. He
could now play them perfectly. Gobbling down his breakfast, Samuel
rushed off for his examination.
Samuel was not as alert during the examination as he was
extremely tired. Although he played the three pieces very well, he
could hardly concentrate when it was time for him to play an unseen
piece. It was a short one but again, there were the terms that Samuel
was always so confused about. He left the studio feeling disappointed
with his performance. He hoped that the examiner would let him pass
the examination.
