Subject-Based Banding

Key Messages:

• Allows us to better cater our curriculum for pupils to ensure they stay engaged and are encouraged to go as far as they can

• Allows pupils to take subjects at different levels, depending on their proficiency and aptitude

Page 16: PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019 Parents/2019 PT… · PTM (Parent Teacher Meeting) PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019. Agenda •Mission and Vision ... •English Play appreciation •Science Practical

Subject-Based Banding

Key Messages:

• Subjects at the Foundation level put focus on mastery of core content and skills at a lower level, compared to subjects at the Standard level.

• Pupils who offer a subject at Foundation level, would have reduced chances of pursuing the Express course at Secondary School.

• Reason: he/she would require substantial bridging (different content/demand)

Page 17: PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019 Parents/2019 PT… · PTM (Parent Teacher Meeting) PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019. Agenda •Mission and Vision ... •English Play appreciation •Science Practical

Some terms used in SBB

• Standard Subject (S)

A subject that is pitched at the level of the previous EM2 level

• Foundation Subject (F)

A subject that is pitched at the level of the previous EM3 level

• Higher Mother Tongue (HMT)

For pupils who manage to do very well in EMS and MT

Page 18: PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019 Parents/2019 PT… · PTM (Parent Teacher Meeting) PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019. Agenda •Mission and Vision ... •English Play appreciation •Science Practical

Higher Mother Tongue (HMT)

HMT is for pupils who demonstrate interest in learning the subject and have the capability to manage Mother Tongue Language at a higher level. They should be performing well in the other 4 subjects.

These pupils will be taking 5 subjects in PSLE.

Posting advantage to SAP school will be taken into account

SAP schools are Anglican High, Catholic High, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’, Chung Cheng High (Main), Dunman High, Maris Stella High, Nanyang Girls’ High, River Valley High and The Chinese High and Nan ChiauHigh

How does Subject-based Banding work?

At P4• School recommends a subject combination

based on P4 examination results. • Parents select preferred combination.• Pupil takes subject combination chosen

by parents at P5 the following year.

At P5• School assesses the pupil’s performance • School decides on the pupil’s subject

combination for pupil at P6

Page 20: PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019 Parents/2019 PT… · PTM (Parent Teacher Meeting) PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019. Agenda •Mission and Vision ... •English Play appreciation •Science Practical

the same subject

combination

Subject based Banding in CPS

At the end of P4, the school will recommend a suitable subject combination for your child based on his/her academic performance.

Parents will be invited to exercise the option

WHY CHANGE?

• Reduce fine differentiation of students at a young age based on exam scores.

• Recognise a student’s level of achievement in each subject, regardless of how his peers have done.

WHAT THE NEW PSLESCORING SYSTEM AIMS TO DO

Page 23: PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019 Parents/2019 PT… · PTM (Parent Teacher Meeting) PRIMARY 4 25 Jan 2019. Agenda •Mission and Vision ... •English Play appreciation •Science Practical

NEW SYSTEM

• This offers a good balance.

• It reduces fine differentiation between students while still giving parents and educators a gauge of a student’s progress at the end of primary school.

• Students can then be matched to suitable academic programmes in secondary schools.

NEW SYSTEM

• Foundation-level subjects are designed to support a small number of students who may not be able to cope with Standard-level subjects.

• This enables them to focus on building up strong fundamentals so that they are better prepared for secondary school.

• This way, the student will also build confidence to pursue learning at a level suitable for them.

FOUNDATION-LEVEL SUBJECTS WILL ALSO BE SCORED ON ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS

NEW SYSTEM

• Students will continue to be placed in the appropriate Secondary School courses –Express, Normal (Academic), Normal (Technical) or option bands.

STUDENTS WILL BE STREAMED BY THEIR PSLE SCORE

IN SUMMARY

WHAT REMAINS WHAT CHANGES

• The T-score Aggregate will be replaced

by the PSLE Score, to reduce the fine

differentiation of our students at a young age based on exam scores.

• Students will be assessed based on their own

achievement, instead of comparing them to their peers.

• Same 4 subjects are

tested, and scores are

awarded to guide students’ choices for

the next stage of their

education journey

• Curriculum is

continually updated.

This is not related to the PSLE scoring

and S1 posting

changes.

Schedule/Structure for the child Lessons, sports teams and other activities should be scheduled around what works best for each child in moderation.

Ensure the right amount of sleepIn addition to improving physical and emotional health, sleep reduces student inattention, and aids student learning and memory skills. Parents can help by encouraging children to shut off screens at least an hour before bedtime and by limiting access to screens within their child’s bedroom.

Model self-careGetting enough sleep and eating nutritious foods The best way to teach children these self-care strategies is for parents to follow them too!

Most importantly, speak to the FTs and work together to help the child

Tips for reducing stress

What FTs will be sharing in class?

• Classroom expectations

• How parents can help at home for the

different subjects

• Communication with parents
