As much as we love seeing you early in the mornings, please make sure that you adjust your clocks during the night from Saturday to Sunday. Summertime officially ends then and the locks go back an hour.

Dear Parents,

The trees are finally losing their leaves and the days are getting shorter. As we head into winter, there are one or two important reminders we should all take note of. It’s a good time to get bike lights checked, ready for the dark mornings and afternoons. Please also remember to send your child to school well prepared for changeable weather, although this is possible 12 months of the year in The Netherlands. Many thanks to everyone for their cooperation with our drop off only situation each morning. The traffic situation is much safer in school than it was before and hopefully, the road situation outside is not as congested as it was on the traffic-free Fridays. Of course, our own jurisdiction ends at the school gates, so we cannot do too much to improve the traffic flow in the surrounding area. If it is any consolation, almost all large international schools face similar (or worse) situations in the mornings and afternoons. Our secondary school students have been extremely helpful in guiding the younger children into the primary playground but it would be great to have some parent help with this too. On Tuesday, one of our mums from primary helped out which made a big difference. However, I have as yet had no other volunteers so I appeal to you again, if you can help one day a week from 8:00 – 8:30am, I would be most grateful. Even if you can only help for the occasional day, this would also be welcome.

As you know, in The Netherlands there exists the system of CT (Compensation Time) days, where teachers, due to the hours that they work, are entitled to additional personal leave days. To try to minimise the impact of this, we choose to have two days that are compulsory CT days for teachers – that is, ALL teachers must take two of their personal leave days on the same day. These days then become school closure days. We are way over the minimum number of required learning hours so we can manage the situation in this way. This year’s compulsory CT days are coming up soon, on 14th and 15th November. This was mentioned in the previous newsletter but I thought it wise to remind you all. The Primary school is closed on these two days, but school remains open for secondary students .

I am delighted to announce that, after over a year of battling the red tape, our School Nurse starts on Tuesday. We have appointed Carolin Fiege, a mother of two children at ISH and a highly experienced nurse. Carolin is actually an Advanced Practice Nurse, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Masters in Nursing. She has 15 years of nursing experience in a Tertiary Care Hospital Critical Care Setting and 3 years of research related experience within the hospital and community setting. She is also a member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, Canada. We are fortunate to have her and delighted to welcome her to our team. Her position is unique in that, the less busy she is, the happier I am!

Soon you will receive an invitation to the first of our Parent Teacher Conferences. The dates are set for Tuesday 8th and Thursday 10th November. However, before that, we have the ever popular Halloween Party. We do need more candy donations please. I look forward to seeing you there.

Kind regards,

Graeme Scott

Primary NewsYear 3 an Interview with a PalaeontologistYear 3 have now finished their great IPC topic ‘Dinosaurs.’ All four classes have now been to the HCO to use their video-conference room to interview a palaeontologist live from The Royal Tyrell Museum in Canada. “We got to ask lots of questions and learned a lot.” Some of us asked about the recent discoveries of feathers from dinosaur times and we found out that some dinosaurs did actually have feathers. Year 3 will now be starting their next topic, ‘Visual Representation – Pictures, Paintings and Photographs.

Primary NewsThe Green and Red StatueEveryone that enters the school more or less stumbles across our new statue. This piece of art was revealed by the alderman Ingrid van Engelshoven, the stadsdeeldirecteur, the sculptor with the children who made it and the school on a sunny Thursday afternoon.

The name of the sculpture is: “Nieuw Waldeck 2551 ZC.” 2010-11 created by: David Bade (Curacao 1970) together with jeugd van Nieuw Waldeck …. Sharona van der Hoeven, Ichrak Chiban, Carmen Massa, Eugenie Bergen, Lientje Bergen, Birgül Dogan, Gülizar Dogan en Feriel Mastouri.

The reasons why we have this sculpture are because it fits in with our philosophy of working together with the local community Loosduinen, it is made out of recycled items that you can find everywhere and it also symbolises sustainability, tying in with our green project and the greening of the ISH.We are working together closely with the Loosduinse community; they are helping us to realise our green goals, not only with their financial contributions to our green project, but also manpower and materials are at our disposal. Which is another reason why we placed it on our ‘land’!

Before it was placed on the school grounds it was placed in the middle of Waldeck on a square. Just barely a day later it was already destroyed. The municipality removed the sculpture and even before repairing the statue they asked us to be ‘a safe haven’ for their creation!

All the green pieces are the ones that have been repaired, this is the reason for two colours. Originally it was just red.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion and can think whatever he/she likes. It is a piece of contemporary art and multi interpretable… I encourage you to have a closer look and find your own ‘item’ !The sculptor is willing to work together with school and do some workshops…

What we would like to do in the near future, but we need to seek the permission from Delftland first, is to place this piece of art in the water; in our pond. We would place it on a concrete plate and according to the wishes of the sculptor David, have the statue hover just above the surface! Something for the future .

ISH is awarded with a silver certificateAs a member of the Eco-Schools organisation, the ISH has committed itself to be a school which has education on Sustainability prominent in our community school brief.

With the realization of GreenSpace, the introduction of a recycling scheme, energy-saving measures and healthier cafeteria menu choices, the reduction of traffic on school campus and of paper waste we have achieved the Eco-Schools Silver Certificate status.

The aim for us is to reach the final stage of the Eco-Schools accreditation process, and obtain the Gold Certificate, the Green Flag, in 2012.

As a school community we can be proud of the many students, guided by a few enthusiastic staff, who have worked hard on Greening the ISH.Work in progress...Rick van Vliet
