Reading: • There is still an expectation that children will read daily and have a signed signature in their diary. This is a great opportunity to read some good books – us adults certainly will be! Complete the tasks below during the week: • Choose a book of your choice that you have not previously read. Examine the front cover and blurb and create predictions and ask questions about the text before you read. • After you have read, explain to a member of your family what the book was about and write a short review of the text and include who you would recommend to read it.

Science (Sound):

Go into the quietest place in your house or garden and close your eyes. What can you hear? Write a list. Is there anything unusual like we had on the sound walk through school?

Find a metal coat hanger if you can. What sound does it make when you tap it? Does the sound change when you hit it against wood? Metal? Write down a description of the sound and how it changes.

Now, tie 2 pieces of string to the coat hanger (about as long as your arm) like thisPut the 2 ends of the string into your ears and plug them in with your fingers. Now tap the coat hanger against something. How has the sound changed? Does it sound different when you tap it against different materials? Talk about what you think this is happening to the sound and discuss why you think this is.

History: Think about and write down the answers to the following questions:

What do you do for entertainment? What are your favourite foods? What types of transports do you use? What is it like where you live?

Now think about what life would be like if you were a Roman soldier. Using your amazing research skills, answer the same questions as if you were a soldier:

• What did they do for entertainment? The amphitheatre was the centre of public entertainment for those living all across the Roman Empire. Spectators would attend to witness fights between man and beast. Like civilians, Roman soldiers would have enjoyed time in the baths. Roam soldiers would have also played games with dice, similar to our traditional games.

• What did they eat?Roman legions ate as well as any Roman citizen. They were frequently supplied with rations of bread, vegetables and meats to keep up their strength. However, this may have varied depending on where the legionnaires were stationed. Their staple foods included; bread, butter (freshly churned), ham, fish, shellfish, beans, olives, chicken, eggs and fruits, such as; dates and figs.

• What modes of transport did they use?The vast majorities of Roman soldiers, would travel about on foot, while the more elite generals and Equites would usually have ridden on horseback. Sometime the cavalry would be expected to march up to 30 miles per day if it was needed.

• What was it like where they lived? • Can you add some amazing facts about Roman soldiers?

Grammar: • Use the URL link to find antonyms of given words. Antonyms have the opposite meaning.

https://resources.hwb.wales.gov.uk/VTC/2011-12/english/reading-games/antonym-splat/index.html

• Use the URL link to match the correct prefix and suffix to the root words. Remember, a prefix goes before the word and a suffix is added on at the end of the root word.
