EYEWITNESSES Today, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew’s Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until “the Son of Man has been raised from the dead” (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased,” and he assures us that the message is “al together rel iable”
TESTIGOS Hoy, la fiesta de la Transfiguración del Señor, es día de testimonios de testigo ocular. El primero, una visión que el profeta Daniel reporta, era muy conocido por Jesús y sus apóstoles. Es una poderosa y memorable visión del cielo. Tiene llamaradas de fuego, ruedas encendidas, el sabio anciano y el Hijo del Hombre. Es claro que Daniel vio algo. Pero, ¿fue un sueño? ¿Fue algo real? ¿O fue solamente un mito astuto? ¡Pedro no quiere que su visión sea confundida de igual manera! Nos cuenta el Evangelio de san Marcos lo que él y sus amigos Santiago y Juan vieron cuando subieron un día a la montaña con Jesús. Jesús les ordenó a los tres testigos que no dijeran nada hasta que “el Hijo del Hombre resucitara de entre los muertos” (Marcos 9:9). Por si los lectores del Evangelio dan por descontada la historia o simplemente la descartan como un mito piadoso, Pedro escribe su propia versión de la Transfiguración de Jesús en su segunda carta a la Iglesia. Escribe con autoridad, como testigo ocular. Reporta este mensaje de Dios referente a Jesús: “Este es mi Hijo muy querido, al que miro con cariño”, y nos asegura que el mensaje es digno de “creer (se) firmemente”.
La Transfiguración del Señor. La celebración de hoy sólo cae en domingo cada seis años más a menos. Aunque escuchamos el Evangelio de la Transfiguración en el Segundo domingo de Cuaresma de este año, el contenido de hoy es diferente. En las palabras que resuenan hoy sobre Jesús podemos escuchar el eco de las palabras que se pronunciaron el día de nuestro Bautismo, cuando empezamos a ser contados entre los amados de Dios. Oremos hoy para que un día heredemos la promesa de la resurrección y la vida en el Reino de los cielos.
Transfiguration of the Lord. Today’s celebration only occurs on a Sunday once every six years or so. While we heard the Transfiguration Gospel earlier this year on the Second Sunday of Lent, today the context is different. In the words that resound over Jesus today, we can hear the echo of the words that sounded on the day of our Baptism, when we were counted among the beloved of God. Let us pray today that we too will one day inherit the promise of resurrection and life in the kingdom of heaven.

GOD’S MERCY Although the disciples’ experience on the mountain was
frightening, our merciful Lord does not want fear to
overshadow the miracle they witnessed. Jesus touched
them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” God’s words
from the cloud overhead were similarly encouraging:
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;
listen to him.” God lovingly reassures us, confirming
Jesus’ identity as the Son of Man and inviting us to pay
attention to the One who comes to save us.
Saint Peter, an eyewitness to the event, declares that his
testimony is “altogether reliable.” We can depend on his
word. Saint Peter hopes his words act like a “lamp
shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the
morning star rises in your hearts.” Thanks be to God, we
can rely on the life-changing experiences of others to
help transform our own lives. We may not ever have
intimidating mountaintop revelations like Peter, James,
and John, so we listen to them as witnesses of God’s
majesty. All of our readings today remind us that God
gives us the Word to believe and live, and sends us the
words of Daniel, Peter, and Matthew to encourage us.
LA MISERICORDIA DE DIOS Aunque la experiencia de los discípulos en la montaña fue amedrentadora, nuestro Señor misericordioso no quiere que el miedo ensombrezca el milagro del que ellos fueron testigos. Jesús los tocó, diciéndoles: "levántense, no tengan miedo". Las palabras de Dios que provenían de la nube fueron igual de alentadoras: "Este es mi Hijo amado en quien me complazco, escúchenlo". Dios amorosamente nos tranquiliza, confirmando la identidad de Jesús como el Hijo del Hombre e invitándonos a poner atención a aquel que viene a salvarnos. San Pedro, un testigo de este evento declara que su testimonio es "totalmente confiable". Podemos depender de su palabra. San Pedro espera que sus palabras sean como una "lámpara brillante en un lugar oscuro, hasta que el alba del día y la estrella de la mañana empiece a levantarse en nuestros corazones". Gracias a Dios, podemos confiar en las experiencias transformadoras de vida de las demás personas que nos ayudan a transformar nuestra propia vida. Quizá no tengamos una experiencia tan extrema en lo alto de una montaña como la que tuvieron Pedro, Santiago y Juan; por lo que los escuchamos a ellos como testigos de la majestad de Dios. Todas las lecturas de hoy nos recuerdan que Dios nos da la Palabra para creer y vivir y nos envía las palabras de Daniel, Pedro y Mateo para animarnos.

EL OJO DEL VIGILANTE El Evangelio de san Mateo revela que el rostro de
Jesús "brillaba como el sol" durante su transfiguración.
El evangelista está usando una figura de discurso,
desde luego, pero podemos imaginar lo qué fue observar la
Transfiguración pudo haber sido para Pedro, Santiago
y Juan. La brillante del rostro de Jesús se compara con
la del sol. El planeta Tierra está a una distancia del sol
de noventa y tres millones de millas, aun así, si miramos al
sol directamente sufrimos quemaduras en nuestras

THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER Saint Matthew’s Gospel reveals that Jesus’ face
“shone like the sun” during his transfiguration.
The evangelist is using a figure of speech, of
course, but we can imagine what beholding the
Transfiguration might have been like for Peter,
James, and John. The brightness of Jesus’ face is
compared to the sun. Earth is about ninety-three
million miles distant from the sun, yet if we look
directly at it, we suffer retinal burns, permanent
eye damage, or severe vision loss. The disciples
were so close to the Lord during his transfiguration
that he could touch them. What is it like to behold
the brightness of Jesus? The disciples were terrified.
Perhaps looking at Jesus in his glory feels as
dangerous as staring at a solar eclipse. Sure
enough, the disciples hid their eyes, falling flat on
their faces.

The Transf igurat ion of the Lord Today’s feast of the Transfiguration presents the full force of God’s power. In the rare moments when humans are permitted to encounter God’s intense fullness, the human reaction is the same: fear. The prophet Daniel is so frightened by his visions that he falls flat on his face in terror. Today’s Gospel reports that Peter, James, and John were “very much afraid” when they saw Jesus transfigured on the mountain. They too fell prostrate in fear. These mighty revelations of God’s brilliant majesty have a paralyzing effect on those who witness them. God does not prefer to terrify us, however. God chooses only rare moments to reveal the divine glory, and then sends witnesses to the rest of us so we can believe without fear. Saint Peter’s letter advises us to be attentive to God’s witnesses. Their testimony is true. Their words renew our hearts and transform our lives.
