Spanish I introduces the language and culture of Hispanic peoples. This course emphasizes basic
grammar, syntax, and the spoken accent while building vocabulary associated with daily
activities. Students begin developing skills in writing, speaking and reading the language.
Students are expected to reach a basic level of proficiency in comprehending the written and
spoken word.

and depth of knowledge. More complex vocabulary, grammar and syntax will be taught.

Spanish III content will build upon prior knowledge and develop the students’ abilities to under-

This course integrates literature, composition, and grammar. Students study the elements of the
short story, poetry, essays, drama and novel. Reading comprehension, composition skills, and
grammar usage are reinforced through the analysis of various styles of writing and through the
writing of essays.

The purpose of this course is to reinforce and expand knowledge in basic grammar, punctuation,
sentence construction, and paragraph structure to insure that writing and composition skills will
meet entry level requirements in subsequent high school courses, post-secondary courses, and in
the workplace, as well as in the social setting. The literature component of this course includes
reading works of Shakespeare, Ayn Rand, John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens, John Knowles and
others. Students participate in class discussions, independently explore various genres, and create
presentations on assigned topics.
ENGLISH III AMERICAN LITERATURE 2 semesters

This course considers the history of American ideas and ideals as found in the classics of our
literary heritage from the original Native Americans, Europeans, the explorers and the first
colonists, through the early 20th
century. The poem, the essay, the short story, the novel and
drama are presented as literary forms that reflect the trends of their stylistic period. The student
is expected to read the original works and arrive at a personal understanding through lecture,
class discussion, and by writing essays, compositions and a literary research paper.
ENGLISH IV BRITISH LITERATURE 2 semesters

The literature and the history of the British culture are studied beginning with the Anglo-Saxon
period. The historical and literary atmosphere of each time period provides the setting into which
each author and work is placed. These works are integrated with advanced composition skills
including essays, critiques, comparisons, and a formal research paper. Vocabulary and grammar
usage are reviewed. Critical and analytical skills receive the greatest emphasis.
CREATIVE WRITING 1 semester

Creative writing classes offer students the opportunity to develop and improve their technique
and individual style in poetry, short story, drama, essays, and other forms of prose. The emphasis
of the class is on writing, although exemplary representations and authors may be studied to
provide a fuller appreciation of the form and craft. The course may cover several expressive
forms or concentrate exclusively on one particular form (such as poetry of playwriting.)

This course has been designed with the thought of exercising and expanding the skills of writing,
speaking, and listening. The goal is to reinforce the student’s confidence in his/her ability to
communicate. Listening skills will be tested by analyzing peer and guest speakers. The students
will experience giving a variety of speeches including: impromptu, persuasive, expository, and
extemporaneous. There is an emphasis on creating effective visual aids through the use of
various electronic media useful in the business world. Students will expand their skills in oral
interpretation. Students must be able to achieve passing grades on quarterly and final
examinations.
LITERATURE IN THEATER 1 semester

Students will explore the link between theater and literature. An overview of the timeline of
theater, discussion of how theater had changed the course of literature, and reading and
discussion about theatrical literature will be presented. Students will investigate the elements that
are used to turn literature into theater productions. Students will also learn the actor’s basic skills
and will develop performance skills using voice, interpretation and movement techniques.

The various genres will be explored using film versions of the great works of respected authors
with focus upon comparative study of the films and genre. The elements of plot, theme, and
conflict will be discussed while observing the techniques that go into the creation of a film
classic – acting, cinema-tography, musical scores, choreography, and directing, among others.

cultures use myths to explain natural or social phenomenon. Students will explore the major
themes, stories, characters, and archetypes present in the mythologies of several different

communication and thought essential to the academic and working word. The general goals of
Composition I are to have students gain more confidence in their writing abilities sand improve

COMPOSITION II/PS 1 semester

This course is intended to build upon the skills students develop in Composition I. As such, the
course assumes that students have a basic control of paragraphing, mechanics, grammar, and
punctuation. The primary focus of the course shifts from the personal writing of Composition I to
analytical, persuasive, and research writing. The course emphasizes critical thinking and clear,
coherent development of thought. Using their research skills and the ability to organize the
results of information gathering, students will be expected to analyze and present the results of
their research in clear, organized, persuasive, and interesting writing projects. This is an online

MATHEMATICS

geometry, and transformational geometry.

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of biology. Topics include chemical

AP Chemistry builds the students’ understanding of the nature and reactivity of matter. After
studying the structure of atoms, molecules, and ions, students move on to solve quantitative
chemical problems and explore how molecular structure relates to chemical and physical
properties. Students will examine the molecular composition of common substances and learn to
predictably transform them through chemical reactions. The equivalent of an introductory
college-level chemistry course, AP Chemistry prepares students for the AP Chemistry exam and
for further study in science, health sciences, or engineering. Students will take the AP Chemistry

GREAT WARS IN U.S. HISTORY 1 semester

Students will study, through documentary films, wars in which the United States has been
involved. These include the American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, World War I, World
War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. Students will discuss the causes of these wars, both from

mercantilism and imperialism affected the wars in the United States.

students to discuss accurate health information and search for new facts while developing
attitudes and skills for making personal decisions that directly influence their health. Students are

lifelong process of enjoying a healthy life-style and the interrelated areas of mental, social, and
physical well-being.

The physical education program offers a variety of physical activities with an emphasis on basic
skills, developing a life style of physical fitness, and activities with carry-over value. The
curriculum varies from quarter to quarter based upon seasons, use of community facilities,

sportsmanship, and etiquette as well as skills in each activity. Activities include: fitness stations,
hockey, volleyball, flicker ball, lacrosse, weight training, tennis, archery, golf, hiking, biking,

RECREATIONAL SPORTS 1-4 semesters

Recreation sports provide students with knowledge, experience and an opportunity to develop
skills in more than one recreational sport or outdoor pursuit. The curriculum varies from quarter
to quarter based upon seasons, use of community facilities, interests and needs. Students are
expected to learn rules and regulations, background, sportsmanship, and etiquette as well as
skills in each activity. Activities include: ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee golf, bowling, handball,
tennis, golf, hiking, biking, badminton, water safety, canoeing and ice-skating, weather

universal stations while emphasizing safety and proper body positioning; they may include other

Health literacy is “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and
understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions”
(Nielsen-Bohlman, 2004). With an emphasis on personal health, this course will challenge
students to consider their mental health, their nutritional health and their physical health. Topical
health issues underlie all course content. Students develop communication skills that allow them
to demonstrate healthy choices with respect for self, family and others. This course is designed to
help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to make appropriate health decisions
throughout their lifespan.
RELIGION
RELIGION I Scripture/Christology_ ___ 2 semesters

The first semester invites students to apply Scripture to their lives, interpret and understand the
Bible as the inspired word of God. They will explore the origins, genres, and relationship of the
Old and New Testaments, all leading to an in depth study of the Gospels and a closer relationship
with Christ and the Church. During second semester, students will be provided with the tools to
articulate and answer their call to discipleship. Beginning with the perspective that adolescents
already have faith, they consider the mystery of Jesus Christ and his life as the ultimate
revelation of the Holy Trinity. Students will explore Jesus’ life, example, and promise to always
be with us. Students will reflect on seeking and finding true happiness in God. The students will
also follow the Confirmation curriculum set forth by the parish. In addition to the course texts,
additional learning opportunities will be provided in the areas of Scripture, doctrine, spirituality,
liturgy, morality, social justice and history. Service hours are a required component of the class.
RELIGION II The Paschal Mystery/The Church 2 semesters

The first semester offers an in-depth study of the life of Christ and his Paschal Mystery.
Students consider the mystery that life comes from death, redemption from suffering. They will
review core concepts covered in earlier courses through the lens of personal prayer, worship, and
Catholic spirituality. Students will look at how the Paschal Mystery informs the virtues, impacts
moral decision making, and is the source of our Church’s liturgy. The second semester invites
students to examine the nature and mission of the Church founded by Christ and guided by the
Holy Spirit. Students are engaged in the images of the Church, documents of Church councils,
and the Scriptural foundation of Church teachings. The understanding of the spread of
Christianity as well as important events and movements within the Church are promoted.
Students are prompted to consider their own vocations and how God calls them to be living
witnesses of the Catholic faith. In addition to the course texts, additional learning opportunities
will be provided in the areas of Scripture, doctrine, spirituality, liturgy, morality, social justice

The first semester focus on the essential message of Christ’s moral teaching, the importance of
love of God and neighbor. The course explores nine essential steps for living a Christian moral
life in the Catholic tradition. The second semester reveals the sacraments as the definitive way
that Jesus remains present to the Church and the world today. The course explores concrete
ways for students to understand the sacraments, participate in their rites, and benefit from their
graces. The course is organized around four dimensions of the sacrament: memorial, celebration,
communion, and transformation. In addition to the course texts, additional learning

Responding to the Call of Jesus Christ (Vocations)/Living as a Disciple of Jesus Christ in
Society (Social Justice)
The purpose of this course is to help students to understand the vocations of life; how Christ calls
us to live. In this course, students should learn how all vocations are similar and how they differ.
The course should be structured around married life, single life, priestly life, and consecrated
life. Students should learn what it means to live life for the benefit of others and the value in
considering a vocation in service to the Christian community. The purpose of this course is to
introduce students to the Church’s social teaching. In this course, students are to learn how
Christ’s concern for others, especially the poor and needy, is present today in the Church’s social
teaching and mission.

forms and to create individual works of art. There courses may also provide a discussion and

This course is designed for students with a serious interest in Art. The course emphasizes an in-
depth exploration of a particular medium of interest. In addition to refining artistic skills, new

coordinated sketches, goal setting and timeline development, and additional assignments
determined by the instructor with student input.

Chorus provides the opportunity to sing a variety of choral literature styles and is designed to
develop vocal techniques, the ability to read music and to sing parts. These skills will prepare

will also participate in the Iowa State High School Solo and Ensemble Contest and will perform
in selected Honor Choirs.
HIGH SCHOOL BAND 2 semesters

Students will have individual and/or group lessons, as needed, to continue to develop the skills
for playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments necessary to sustain a high school
instrumental program. Large group practice will enable students to perform several concerts a
year (Christmas concert, spring concert, etc.). Selected students will also take part in the Iowa
State High School Solo and Ensemble contest, and will perform in selected Honor Bands.
CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION
Through an agreement with Eastern Iowa Community College District (Clinton, Muscatine and
Scott Community Colleges), career and technical education programs of study are available. The
purpose of the EICCD Career and Technical Education programs is to prepare any student to
enter and succeed in a career.
The EICCD Career and Technical Education Program goals are:
o To raise academic achievement in math, science and communication skills;
o To prepare students for certificates or associates degrees through community and
technical colleges;
o To address employer needs for workers with advanced skills.
The programs available to Prince of Peace Catholic School students are: Administrative and

Focus is placed on developing HTML and CSS scripting skills as well as incorporating XML-
