FOREIGN LANGUAGE

SPANISH I 2 semesters

Spanish I introduces the language and culture of Hispanic peoples. This course emphasizes basic

grammar, syntax, and the spoken accent while building vocabulary associated with daily

activities. Students begin developing skills in writing, speaking and reading the language.

Students are expected to reach a basic level of proficiency in comprehending the written and

spoken word.

SPANISH II 2 semesters

Spanish II expands upon the basic knowledge learned in Spanish I while increasing those skills

and depth of knowledge. More complex vocabulary, grammar and syntax will be taught.

Students will be expected to increase their proficiency by demonstrating their comprehension of

more difficult reading and writing and through verbal responses.

SPANISH III 2 semesters

Spanish III content will build upon prior knowledge and develop the students’ abilities to under-

stand Spanish speakers and express themselves with accuracy and fluency in informal and formal

situations. Vocabulary will continue to expand in order for students to understand literature, film,

and various forms of media.

LANGUAGE ARTS

ENGLISH I 2 semesters

This course integrates literature, composition, and grammar. Students study the elements of the

short story, poetry, essays, drama and novel. Reading comprehension, composition skills, and

grammar usage are reinforced through the analysis of various styles of writing and through the

writing of essays.

ENGLISH II WORLD LITERATURE 2 semesters

The purpose of this course is to reinforce and expand knowledge in basic grammar, punctuation,

sentence construction, and paragraph structure to insure that writing and composition skills will

meet entry level requirements in subsequent high school courses, post-secondary courses, and in

the workplace, as well as in the social setting. The literature component of this course includes

reading works of Shakespeare, Ayn Rand, John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens, John Knowles and

others. Students participate in class discussions, independently explore various genres, and create

presentations on assigned topics.

ENGLISH III AMERICAN LITERATURE 2 semesters

This course considers the history of American ideas and ideals as found in the classics of our

literary heritage from the original Native Americans, Europeans, the explorers and the first

colonists, through the early 20th

century. The poem, the essay, the short story, the novel and

drama are presented as literary forms that reflect the trends of their stylistic period. The student

is expected to read the original works and arrive at a personal understanding through lecture,

class discussion, and by writing essays, compositions and a literary research paper.

ENGLISH IV BRITISH LITERATURE 2 semesters

The literature and the history of the British culture are studied beginning with the Anglo-Saxon

period. The historical and literary atmosphere of each time period provides the setting into which

each author and work is placed. These works are integrated with advanced composition skills

including essays, critiques, comparisons, and a formal research paper. Vocabulary and grammar

usage are reviewed. Critical and analytical skills receive the greatest emphasis.

CREATIVE WRITING 1 semester

Creative writing classes offer students the opportunity to develop and improve their technique

and individual style in poetry, short story, drama, essays, and other forms of prose. The emphasis

of the class is on writing, although exemplary representations and authors may be studied to

provide a fuller appreciation of the form and craft. The course may cover several expressive

forms or concentrate exclusively on one particular form (such as poetry of playwriting.)

SPEECH 1 semester

This course has been designed with the thought of exercising and expanding the skills of writing,

speaking, and listening. The goal is to reinforce the student’s confidence in his/her ability to

communicate. Listening skills will be tested by analyzing peer and guest speakers. The students

will experience giving a variety of speeches including: impromptu, persuasive, expository, and

extemporaneous. There is an emphasis on creating effective visual aids through the use of

various electronic media useful in the business world. Students will expand their skills in oral

interpretation. Students must be able to achieve passing grades on quarterly and final

LITERATURE IN THEATER 1 semester

Students will explore the link between theater and literature. An overview of the timeline of

theater, discussion of how theater had changed the course of literature, and reading and

discussion about theatrical literature will be presented. Students will investigate the elements that

are used to turn literature into theater productions. Students will also learn the actor’s basic skills

and will develop performance skills using voice, interpretation and movement techniques.

LITERATURE IN FILM 1 semester

The various genres will be explored using film versions of the great works of respected authors

with focus upon comparative study of the films and genre. The elements of plot, theme, and

conflict will be discussed while observing the techniques that go into the creation of a film

classic – acting, cinema-tography, musical scores, choreography, and directing, among others.

MYTHOLOGY 1 semester

Mythology courses introduce students to the origins and meanings of myths, including how

cultures use myths to explain natural or social phenomenon. Students will explore the major

themes, stories, characters, and archetypes present in the mythologies of several different

cultures.

COMPOSITION I/PS 1 semester

A writing and reading course designed to prepare the student for the types of written

communication and thought essential to the academic and working word. The general goals of

Composition I are to have students gain more confidence in their writing abilities sand improve

their proficiency in critical reading, exposition and persuasion. This is an online course offered

COMPOSITION II/PS 1 semester

This course is intended to build upon the skills students develop in Composition I. As such, the

course assumes that students have a basic control of paragraphing, mechanics, grammar, and

punctuation. The primary focus of the course shifts from the personal writing of Composition I to

analytical, persuasive, and research writing. The course emphasizes critical thinking and clear,

coherent development of thought. Using their research skills and the ability to organize the

This course includes the study of properties and operations of the real number system; evaluating

rational algebraic expressions; solving and graphing first degree equations and inequalities;

solving simple quadratic equations.

GEOMETRY 2 semesters

Throughout this course, students will learn about shapes, points, lines, and planes and gain an

understanding of how geometry affects the world around us. They will travel a mathematical

highway illuminated by spatial relationships, reasoning, connections, and problem solving. They

Geometry includes the topics of properties of plane and solid figures; deductive methods of

reasoning and the use of logic. Geometry as an axiomatic system includes the study of

postulates, theorems, and formal proofs; rules of congruence, similarity, parallelism, and

perpendicularity; and rules of angle measurement in triangles, including trigonometry, coordinate

geometry, and transformational geometry.

Algebra II is a comprehensive course that builds upon the algebraic concepts covered in Algebra

advanced polynomial functions. Students are introduced to rational, radical, exponential and

Students in this course get an intuitive understanding of the concepts of calculus and experience

take the AP Calculus examination in May.

AP STATISTICS 2 semesters

AP Statistics gives students hands-on experience collecting, analyzing, graphing, and

interpreting real-world data. They learn to effectively design and analyze research studies by

COLLEGE ALGEBRA PS 1 semester

PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS-OTHER 2 semesters

This course is a companion course to AP Statistics. AP Statistics students are provided an

opportunity to work collaboratively to solve problems in data exploration, sampling, and

experimentation, anticipating patterns and statistical inference. This year long course is designed

to strengthen the students understanding of the conceptual themes and to prepare for the AP

Statistics exam.

SCIENCE

BIOLOGY 2 semesters

Biology is a laboratory class investigating the living world around us. Students will develop

skills in discovering and evaluating new scientific knowledge at the levels of cellular chemistry,

whole-organism physiology, and environmental ecology. Laboratory experiments will emphasize

scientific logic, discovery and respect for life. Biology will prepare students to thrive in college-

entrance exams and to make good decisions about personal health and improving the world

environment.

CHEMISTRY 2 semesters

Chemistry is a laboratory class investigating properties of matter and chemical reactions.

Students will develop skills in planning precise investigations, in mathematical analysis of data,

Topics covered in this two-semester course include linear motion, two-dimensional motion, laws

of motion, force, momentum and collisions, work and energy, rotational motion, gravitational

Emphasis is placed on appreciating physics as a human endeavor to understand the concepts,

theories, and laws governing the interaction of matter, energy, and forces as well as encouraging

application of physics to common life experiences.

AP Environmental Science courses are designed by the College Board to provide students with

the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the

interrelationships of the natural world, identify and analyze environmental problems (both

natural and human made), evaluate the relative risks associated with the problems, and examine

alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them. Topics covered include science as a

process, ecological processes and energy conversions, earth as an interconnected system, the

impact of humans on natural systems, cultural and societal contexts of environmental problems,

and the development of practices that will ensure sustainable systems.

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of biology. Topics include chemical

applications in biology, cellular biology, bioenergetics, cell division and genetics.

AP CHEMISTRY 2 semesters

AP Chemistry builds the students’ understanding of the nature and reactivity of matter. After

studying the structure of atoms, molecules, and ions, students move on to solve quantitative

chemical problems and explore how molecular structure relates to chemical and physical

properties. Students will examine the molecular composition of common substances and learn to

predictably transform them through chemical reactions. The equivalent of an introductory

college-level chemistry course, AP Chemistry prepares students for the AP Chemistry exam and

for further study in science, health sciences, or engineering. Students will take the AP Chemistry

examination in May.

SOCIAL STUDIES

INTRO TO SOCIAL SCIENCES 1 semester

Sciences, including Geography, Psychology, and Sociology. Students will study the relationship

political institutions and explores how our government works. The class will include

constitutional principles, the concepts of rights and responsibilities, the role of political parties

and interest groups, and the importance of civic participation in the democratic process.

Emphasis will be placed on the three branches of our government, how each works and what

checks and balances have been established.

ECONOMICS 1 semester

together constitute the government of the United States. Students examine the structure, function,

Economic decisions affect us every day of our lives. Understanding economics means thinking

GLOBAL STUDIES 1 semester

Globe Studies examines a broad range of cultural, religious, economic, political, and social

issues confronting the globalized world today. Students will analyze global issues, the

GREAT WARS IN U.S. HISTORY 1 semester

Students will study, through documentary films, wars in which the United States has been

involved. These include the American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, World War I, World

War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. Students will discuss the causes of these wars, both from

an immediate U.S. involvement and from a world view that studies how outside forces such as

mercantilism and imperialism affected the wars in the United States.

INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY/PS 1 semester

The basic premise of sociology is that life is not lived individually, but in groups, through the

symbols, the language, the roles we play, the culture the group has developed and the meanings

the group has to offer. This course will introduce a framework of thinking that involves social

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

HEALTH /CPR 2 semesters

A comprehensive study of the components of wellness, this course presents the opportunity for

students to discuss accurate health information and search for new facts while developing

attitudes and skills for making personal decisions that directly influence their health. Students are

encouraged to practice those choices and responsible behavior patterns that are part of the

lifelong process of enjoying a healthy life-style and the interrelated areas of mental, social, and

physical well-being.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 1-4 semesters

The physical education program offers a variety of physical activities with an emphasis on basic

skills, developing a life style of physical fitness, and activities with carry-over value. The

curriculum varies from quarter to quarter based upon seasons, use of community facilities,

conditioning, fitness testing, water safety, and canoeing, weather permitting. The course includes

paper work and testing as well as performance.

RECREATIONAL SPORTS 1-4 semesters

Recreation sports provide students with knowledge, experience and an opportunity to develop

skills in more than one recreational sport or outdoor pursuit. The curriculum varies from quarter

to quarter based upon seasons, use of community facilities, interests and needs. Students are

expected to learn rules and regulations, background, sportsmanship, and etiquette as well as

skills in each activity. Activities include: ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee golf, bowling, handball,

tennis, golf, hiking, biking, badminton, water safety, canoeing and ice-skating, weather

permitting. The course includes paper work and testing as well as performance.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXEMPTION 1-2 semesters

Iowa Code 281-IAC 12.5(5)(f) allows for a 12th

grade student to be excused from PE if the

student is enrolled in an academic course not otherwise available and is involved in a varsity

sport for that semester. Students in grades nine through eleven may be excused from PE in order

to enroll in academic courses not otherwise available to the student, is involved in a varsity sport

for that semester and with administrator approval.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION – INDEPENDENT STUDY 1 semester

Course in Physical Education – Independent Study, often conducted with instructors as mentors,

enable students to explore topics of interest related to physical education. Independent Study

courses may serve as an opportunity for students to expand their expertise in a particular sport or

WEIGHT TRAINING/ CONDITIONING 2 semesters

Weight training courses help students develop knowledge and skills with free weights and

universal stations while emphasizing safety and proper body positioning; they may include other

components such as anatomy and conditioning.

Health literacy is “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and

understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions”

(Nielsen-Bohlman, 2004). With an emphasis on personal health, this course will challenge

students to consider their mental health, their nutritional health and their physical health. Topical

health issues underlie all course content. Students develop communication skills that allow them

to demonstrate healthy choices with respect for self, family and others. This course is designed to

help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to make appropriate health decisions

throughout their lifespan.

RELIGION

RELIGION I Scripture/Christology_ ___ 2 semesters

The first semester invites students to apply Scripture to their lives, interpret and understand the

Bible as the inspired word of God. They will explore the origins, genres, and relationship of the

Old and New Testaments, all leading to an in depth study of the Gospels and a closer relationship

with Christ and the Church. During second semester, students will be provided with the tools to

articulate and answer their call to discipleship. Beginning with the perspective that adolescents

already have faith, they consider the mystery of Jesus Christ and his life as the ultimate

revelation of the Holy Trinity. Students will explore Jesus’ life, example, and promise to always

be with us. Students will reflect on seeking and finding true happiness in God. The students will

also follow the Confirmation curriculum set forth by the parish. In addition to the course texts,

The first semester offers an in-depth study of the life of Christ and his Paschal Mystery.

Students consider the mystery that life comes from death, redemption from suffering. They will

review core concepts covered in earlier courses through the lens of personal prayer, worship, and

Catholic spirituality. Students will look at how the Paschal Mystery informs the virtues, impacts

moral decision making, and is the source of our Church’s liturgy. The second semester invites

students to examine the nature and mission of the Church founded by Christ and guided by the

Holy Spirit. Students are engaged in the images of the Church, documents of Church councils,

Christianity as well as important events and movements within the Church are promoted.
