  • Mission StatementPrince of Peace Lutheran Church is a family of Christians

Growing in faith and reaching out in love

Welcome to God's House which is the spiritual home of all who worship today, wherever you may be. Partof Prince of Peace Church's mission statement says that we are "a family of Christians." Because God has madeus family, we are together, even though we are physically separated, to receive the Lord's strength, comfortand peace. Christ, our brother, is with us, and his presence will change us. As new people, we leave this timeof worship to live our daily lives in the world as ambassadors for Christ. Go, but remember to come home. Seeyou next Sunday

The Glass Cross on the Altar is unique. There are only 3 of these handmade crosses in the world. The other twoare in congregations with whom we share our ministry. One is on the altar of Kopano Lutheran Church inMogwase, South Africa and the other is at the Evangelische Stadtpfarrkirche Hermannstadt in Sibiu, Romania. These Lutheran churches are ministry partners with us with whom we have shared visits, resources and mutualsupport. Each Sunday as we gather in worship under this common cross, we are reminded of our faith in ourSavior, Jesus the Christ, whose Spirit unites peoples of different countries, races, cultures and histories underHis benevolent love.

    WORDS OF WELCOME

    SCRIPTURE Isaiah 53:4-9

CALL TO WORSHIPP Jesus, we have come to Calvary with you today. We seek to know the agony you suffered there.

C Have mercy upon us, for we caused your suffering.

P Teach us to endure, as you endured, the scorn of unbelievers and the torments of our enemies.

C Make us bold and effective witnesses to you.

P Save us from despair when we are circled round about.

C Protect us from our enemies, especially the devil, the world, and our own sinful flesh.

P Help keep our faith in you strong forever.

C When we falter, rescue us.

P When we forget your promises, refresh our memories.

C When we face death, be with us and give us courage and hope.

    P Help us this day to relive your death;

C And to understand why you went to the cross for us.

SOLO Jesus, I Will Ponder Now JESU KREUZ, LEIDEN UND PEIN

What Shall I Do, Then, With Jesus Who Is Called Christ?

    INTRODUCTION

FIRST MEDITATION — What shall I (Judas) do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ? Scripture Reading: Matthew 26:14-16Meditation (followed by prayer) Hymn: ELW 599 — Lord Jesus, Think on Me

Lord Jesus, think on me, and purge away my sin;from selfish passions set me free and make me pure within.

Lord Jesus, think on me, by anxious thoughts oppressed;let me your loving servant be and taste your promised rest.

Lord Jesus, think on me, nor let me go astray;through darkness and perplexity point out your chosen way.

Lord Jesus, think on me, that, when the flood is past,I may the eternal brightness see and share your joy at last.

Text: Synesius of Cyrene, 375-430; tr. Allen W. Chatfield, 1808-1896, alt.

    The first candle is extinguished.

  • SECOND MEDITATION — What shall we (the Sanhedrin) do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ? Scripture Reading: Matthew 26:63b-68Meditation (followed by prayer)Hymn: ELW 337 — Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed (st. 1-2)

Alas! And did my Savior bleed, and did my sov'reign die?Would he devote that sacred head for sinners such as I?

Was it for sins that I had done he groaned upon the tree?Amazing pity, grace unknown, and love beyond degree!

    Text: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748, alt.

    The second candle is extinguished.

THIRD MEDITATION — What shall I (Peter) do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?Scripture Reading: Matthew 26:69-75Meditation (followed by prayer)Hymn: ELW 349 — Ah, Holy Jesus (st. 1-2)

Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offendedthat we to judge thee have in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted.

Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon thee?Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone thee. 'Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee; I crucified thee.

Text: Johann Heermann, 1585-1647; tr. Robert Bridges, 1844-1930, alt.

    The third candle is extinguished.

FOURTH MEDITATION — What shall I (King Herod) do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?Scripture Reading: Luke 23:7-8 Meditation (followed by prayer)Hymn: ELW 592 — Just As I Am, without One Plea

Just as I am, without one plea, but that thy blood was shed for me,and that thou bidd'st me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come,

Just as I am; thy love unknown has broken ev'ry barrier down;now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

    Text: Charlotte Elliott, 1789-1871

    The fourth candle is extinguished.

  • FIFTH MEDITATION — What shall I (Pontius Pilate) do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?Scripture Reading: Matthew 27:24 Meditation (followed by prayer)Hymn: ELW 609 — Chief of Sinners Though I Be (1-2, 5)

Chief of sinners though I be, Jesus shed his blood for me,died that I might live on high, lives that I might never die.As the branch is to the vine, I am his, and he is mine.

Oh, the height of Jesus' love! Higher than the heav'ns above, deeper than the depths of sea, lasting as eternity.Love that found me—wondrous thought—found me when I sought him not.

O my Savior, help afford by your Spirit and your word! When my wayward heart would stray, keep me in the narrow way;grace in time of need supply while I live and when I die.

    Text: William McComb, 1793-1870

    The fifth candle is extinguished.

SIXTH MEDITATION — What shall I (Penitent Thief) do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?Scripture Reading: Luke 23:32, 39-43Meditation (followed by prayer)Hymn: ELW 623 — Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me (st. 1-3)

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,let me hide myself in thee;let the water and the blood, from thy riven side which flowed,be of sin the double cure; cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r.

Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law's demands;could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, all for sin could not atone; thou must save, and thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring; simply to thy cross I cling.Naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace;foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die.

    Text: Augustus M. Toplady, 1740-1778

    The sixth candle is extinguished.

SEVENTH MEDITATION — What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?Scripture Reading: Isaiah 53:4-6Meditation (followed by prayer)

The seventh candle - the Christ Candle - is left burning to symbolize Christ’s soon-coming resurrection.

  • LORD’S PRAYERP Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray.

C Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

    now and forever. Amen

PROCESSION OF THE CROSS As we join in singing “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” a large cross is carried in procession through thechurch and placed before the altar. (Although you cannot physically come forward to the cross in this time ofpandemic, we invite you to bow or kneel where you are, raising your hand in a virtual touch.)

HYMN: ELW 803 — When I Survey the Wondrous CrossWhen I survey the wondrous cross on which the prince of glory died,my richest gain I count but loss and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast save in the death of Christ, my God;all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.

See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down.Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small;love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

    Text: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748
