Mission Statement

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is a family of Christians

Growing in faith and reaching out in love

Welcome to God's House which is the spiritual home of all who worship today, wherever you may be. Partof Prince of Peace Church's mission statement says that we are "a family of Christians." Because God hasmade us family, we are together, even though we are physically separated, to receive the Lord's strength, comfort and peace. Christ, our brother, is with us, and his presence will change us. As new people, we leavethis time of worship to live our daily lives in the world as ambassadors for Christ. Go, but remember to comehome. See you next Sunday!

The Glass Cross on the Altar is unique. There are only 3 of these handmade crosses in the world. Theother two are in congregations with whom we share our ministry. One is on the altar of Kopano LutheranChurch in Mogwase, South Africa and the other is at the Evangelische Stadtpfarrkirche Hermannstadt inSibiu, Romania. These Lutheran churches are ministry partners with us with whom we have shared visits, resources and mutual support. Each Sunday as we gather in worship under this common cross, we arereminded of our faith in our Savior, Jesus the Christ, whose Spirit unites peoples of different countries, races, cultures and histories under His benevolent love.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray.

C Teach us, good Lord God, to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, tofight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask forreward, except that of knowing that we do your will, through Jesus Christ, our Savior andLord. Amen

FIRST READING Jeremiah 20:7-13

Jeremiah accuses God of forcing him into a ministry that brings him only contempt and persecution. YetJeremiah is confident that God will be a strong protector against his enemies and commits his life into God’shands.

O Lord, you have enticed me, and I was enticed;7

you have overpowered me, and you have prevailed.I have become a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me. For whenever I speak, I must8

cry out, I must shout, “Violence and destruction!”For the word of the Lord has become for me areproach and derision all day long. If I say, “I will9

not mention him, or speak any more in his name,”then within me there is something like a burning fireshut up in my bones; I am weary with holding it in,and I cannot. For I hear many whispering: “Terror10

is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!”All my close friends are watching for me to stumble.

“Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevailagainst him, and take our revenge on him.” But11

the Lord is with me like a dread warrior; thereforemy persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed.Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten. O12

Lord of hosts, you test the righteous, you see theheart and the mind; let me see your retributionupon them, for to you I have committed my cause.

Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has13

delivered the life of the needy from the hands ofevildoers.

R Word of God, word of life.

C Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING Romans 6:1b-11In baptism we were incorporated into the reality of Christ’s death and resurrection. We have been made newin Christ through his death and resurrection to live freed from sin.

Should we continue in sin in order that grace may1b

abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin2

go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us3

who have been baptized into Christ Jesus werebaptized into his death? Therefore we have been4

buried with him by baptism into death, so that, justas Christ was raised from the dead by the glory ofthe Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death5

like his, we will certainly be united with him in aresurrection like his. We know that our old self was6

crucified with him so that the body of sin might bedestroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved tosin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if7 8

we have died with Christ, we believe that we willalso live with him. We know that Christ, being9

raised from the dead, will never die again; death nolonger has dominion over him. The death he died,10

he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, helives to God. So you also must consider yourselves11

dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

R Word of God, word of life.

C Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL READING Matthew 10:24-39

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.

C Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus warns his disciples that their ministry in his name will meet with opposition. However, he assures themthat they need not fear for the truth will come to light. Life is found in Christ.

[Jesus said to the twelve:] “A disciple is not above24

the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is25

enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, andthe slave like the master. If they have called themaster of the house Beelzebul, how much more willthey malign those of his household! “So have no26

fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will notbe uncovered, and nothing secret that will notbecome known. What I say to you in the dark, tell27

in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaimfrom the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the28

body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him whocan destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two29

sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them willfall to the ground apart from your Father. And30

even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do31

not be afraid; you are of more value than many

sparrows. “Everyone therefore who acknowledges32

me before others, I also will acknowledge before myFather in heaven; but whoever denies me before33

others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to34

the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but asword. For I have come to set a man against his35

father, and a daughter against her mother, and adaughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and36

one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.Whoever loves father or mother more than me is37

not worthy of me; and whoever loves son ordaughter more than me is not worthy of me; and38

whoever does not take up the cross and follow me isnot worthy of me. Those who find their life will39

lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake willfind it.”

P The Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON WHO’S READING WHO? Pastor Roger McQuistion HYMN OF THE DAY Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus ELW 802

Let us ever walk with Jesus, follow his example pure, through a world that would deceive usand to sin our spirits lure.Onward in his footsteps treading, trav'lers here, our home above, full of faith and hope and love, let us do our Savior's bidding.Faithful Lord, with me abide;I shall follow where you guide.

Let us suffer here with Jesus, and with patience bear our cross.Joy will follow all our sadness;where he is there is no loss.Though today we sow no laughter,we shall reap celestial joy:all discomforts that annoyshall give way to mirth hereafter.Jesus, here I share your woe;help me there your joy to know.

Let us gladly die with Jesus.Since by death he conquered death,he will free us from destruction, give to us immortal breath.Let us mortify all passionthat would lead us into sin;and the grave that shuts us inshall but prove the gate of heaven.Jesus, here with you I die, there to live with you on high.

Let us also live with Jesus. He has risen from the deadthat to life we may awaken.Jesus, you are now our head,we are your own living members;where you live, there we shall bein your presence constantly, living there with you forever.Jesus, let me faithful be;life eternal grant to me.

RENUNCIATIONS AND APOSTLES’ CREEDP Let us renew our Baptismal Promises first by renouncing the Devil and all the forces that work against

God, and then by reciting the Apostle’s Creed.

C I renounce all evil, every force that moves against God’s will.I renounce the powers of this world, the structures of inequality, and the agents ofoppression that undermine God’s purposes.I renounce my own participation with these powers, my own actions and inactions that drawme from God.

P With the whole church, let us confess our faith.

C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen
