This Challenge Pack has been divided in to 4 sections: Craft, Food, Games and Other. In order to help you provide a balanced and varied programme for your young adventurers we recommend that the following number of activities are completed by each age group:

Why?Prince Philip was an enthusiastic patron of the Cartoon Museum in London for over 20 years until his death in 2021. Use our Comic Strip and Comic Book templates to help you; search ‘Comic’ on our website.
Make a boat or a model ship to float/race. Prince Philip joined the Royal Navy in 1939 and completed active service for 13 years until 1952.
Prince Philip was trilingual speaking French, German and English. Create your own useful phrase book in a language other than your own.
Build or pioneer a raft.
Why?In 1943 during The Invasion of Sicily the Duke of Edinburgh (then First Lieutenant Philip) hatched a plan to distract German bombers with a raft so that his ship the HMS Wallace could speed away to safety.
Create a round robin letter or write and decorate/illustrate a letter to a friend/family member. Prince Philip exchanged letters at the beginning of his courtship with Queen Elizabeth when she was 13 and he 18.

Prince Philip was known to whip up simple suppers for The Queen and himself once the servants have been dismissed for the night. These recipes included scrambled eggs and smoked haddock, Scotch woodcock and omelette, with bacon. Have a go at making one of them yourself.
The Duke of Edinburgh reportedly enjoyed a spicy dish and Salmon Coulibiac was among his favourites; have a go at making this dish of Russian origin that is also often made with simpler, vegetarian fillings.

Why?Prince Philip retired from flying in August 1997 after 44 years as a pilot, flying for 5,986 hours in 59 types of aircraft.

The Duke of Edinburgh Awards were founded in 1956. Try one or more sports that are new to you, maybe you could develop one as part of the physical element of your award?
Develop a game of your own based on the requirements and levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
Prince Philip took up playing polo whilst stationed in Malta from 1949. He went on to become one of the best polo players in Britain. Have a go at playing polo, if you don’t have any horses why not try hobby horses instead?
When arthritis and age forced him to quit polo he took up carriage driving, a sport which he helped to develop. Discover what carriage driving is and watch the sport.
Prince Philip devised the Mounted Games for children to compete who could not afford an expensive pony. The games are made up of many different games, split in to team, pairs and individual games. Use the Mounted Games as inspiration for your own sports competition, on the ground or on horse back!
