I was stuck in the water all slimy and green,

I was under a fairy spell that was so very mean.

I was a prince who was turned into a frog,

All day I would sit by the river on a log.

That mischievous fairy said I would come to no harm, I just needed to break her

wicked charm.

A girl to love me just as I appear, One who is kind, beautiful and

fair.

The seasons past-winter, spring, summer and fall.

Along came Princess Lillian with her golden ball.

The ball rolled away down to the river bank,

And into the water it dropped and sank.

The Princess Lillian wept for her

ball of gold, The water was murky and very

cold.

I dived down deep to retrieve her toy,

She was so happy she jumped for joy.

I would give her the ball if she made a deal,

For a place to sleep and a hot meal.

I made her promise that I could

eat off her dish, And to sleep on her pillow was

my greatest wish.

She agreed to let me stay for three nights,

She made me promise to stay out of sight.

She picked me up and I dripped mud on her gown of blue,

All the way to the castle she said, “EWWW!”

She kept her promise and we became friends,

But that is not how this story ends.

As she slept I gave her a goodbye kiss,

Her friendship I would dearly miss.

She awoke with a start and knocked me out of the bed, I fell to the floor right on my

green head.

She scooped me up-my dear Princess Lillian,

And gave me a kiss-not caring that I was an amphibian.

The wicked fairy spell was at last broke,

No longer would I hop and croak.

From that day forward and ever since,

I have been her devoted friend and Prince!

-Read the fairytale to the children.

-Read the fairytale again to the children. This time ask them to help you provide the second rhyme word in each couplet.

-Read the poem again-this time the children provide the second rhyme in each couplet by themselves.

-Teach the tier two words: mischievous, murky, retrieve, and amphibian. -Discuss the difference between fantasy and reality/fiction and non-fiction. Read a

non-fiction book about frogs. -Read the traditional The Frog Prince.

- Ask the children to describe the parts of the story that are pretend. -Discuss the characters in the story. Who is the voice in the poem?

-Ask the children to describe the setting of the poem. -Give the children the complimenting activities to do at a poetry/rhyme center.
