Happy autumn! The school year has started off quite well, as students arrived back excited and ready to learn. Thank you for sending your children to school well rested and on time. Students from Pre-Kindergarten through the fifth grade have been actively learning using the Common Core standards and PGCPS curriculum.
I realize there are many questions in regards to the Common Core Standards. Please be on the look out for flyers announcing our parent information sessions.
It was wonderful to see so many families at our Back to School Night. Communication is key - please contact us should you have any concerns, questions, or comments. Our purpose is to help each child become the very best he/she can be. It has been shown that strong parental involvement and interest in education are crucial factors in students' success in school. We encourage you to be well-informed with up to date information about your child's class and our school.
October marks a celebration of "National School Lunch"! We would like to take this opportunity to invite you enjoy lunch with your child on Tuesday, October 15th. Please view your child's daily schedule for lunch times.
A few reminders: • We know many students have cell phones. Please remind your child
(ren) that all phones must be turned off and stay in backpacks while in school. Should their phone be taken out during the school day it will be used for instructional r urposes.
• Our Character Day Parade will take place, October 31 at 10:00am. Please make sure students bring their book and costumes to school. Students will change into their costumes prior to the parade.

Children will be learning to describe and classify objects by their attributes and will focus on one-to-one correspondence. Ask your child to help you match the socks in the laundry basket. Begin with pairs of socks of different colors and sizes. (Don't expect your preschooler to sort a pile of white athletic socks.) Spread the socks out on a large surface. Studies have shown that reading with your child for 20 minutes reaps great success. As your child reads to you, have them point to each word. Our kindergarten students just finished unit one which included: colors, geometrical shapes and positions). We just started our second unit del curriculum "Common Core." Our kindergarten students will develop strategies to effectively count by ones and by tens all the way to 100. Our main objective of this unit is to answer the question: How can we show how many there are?
Our kindergarten students will learn to: • count up to 100 by ones and by tens • understand the relationship between the numbers and the amount that they represent • count and give the value of each object counted • understand that the last digit/number represents the amount that he/she has counted • understand that each subsequence number increases in value by one more number.

Ciencias: Programa STEM En el kindergarten y primer grado el programa se esta llevando a cabo por la Sra. Guzman y por el Sr.Flaquer, en este, tras una introduccion, en la que se reviso el concepto de vivo/no vivo con la idea de que el alumnado afianzara los conceptos propios del curso anterior y adquiriera confianza con el desarrollo de las clases en esparlol; se procedio a iniciar la unidad relativa a los cambios en la naturaleza titulada "Cambiar es bueno" en la que se presta especial atencion a los ciclos de vida animal, en especial al de la mariposa y la rana. Comenzamos con el ciclo de vida de la mariposa en el que se le explico al alumnado como a partir de una oruga, tras esta formar una crisalida luego se formaba una mariposa capaz de poner huevos a partir de los que saldrian orugas cerrandose asi su ciclo de vida. Para el desarrollo de esta unidad se utilizaron varias tecnicas en las que se implicaba directamente al alumno, estas partian de la explicacion del profesor para luego desarrollar actividades de manera individual y colectiva y siempre bajo el desarrollo del lenguaje
Se destacan entre estas actividades dos proyectos fundamentales, uno consistia en la representaci6n del ciclo de vida de la mariposa desde una perspectiva artistica en la que el alumnado utilizo diferentes materiales (platos, diferentes tipos de pasta alimenticia y hojas) para recrear el mencionado ciclo de vida; el otro consistia en criar orugas reales que tras formar sus correspondientes crisalidas derivaron en maravillosas mariposas que el alumnado libero en
el patio del colegio como colofon final del proyecto. Actualmente nos encontramos desarrollando diferentes actividades relativas al ciclo de vida de la rana, que tienen como objetivo principal la implicacion del alumnado para asi facilitar su aprendizaje.
Science STEM Program In our Kindergarten and First Grade classes lead by Sra. Guzman and Sr. Flaquer, concluded our unit about living and non living things. Our students had the opportunity to classify different types of living and non living things and to practice all concepts in Spanish. They were able to connect these concepts with the next unit entitled -Change is Good, which is related to nature. This unit will have a special focus in the life cycle of the butterfly and the frog. We started with the life cycle of the butterfly in which they learn first hand how a caterpillar changed to a chrysalis and finally to a butterfly. guidance to student discussions and first hand observations of live butterflies in the classroom, were put in place in order for the students to understand this process. They acquired a great deal of understanding of how a tiny egg laid by a butterfly changed to a caterpillar, then to a chrysalis, to finally to a butterfly, all in Spanish!
Our students had the opportunity to manipulate materials such as plates, different types of pastas and leaves in order to represent their understanding of the lessons and recreate the life cycle of the butterfly. To finalize this lesson, the students freed the butterflies they took care of and saw developing in the classroom. They gathered in the school playground to free and say goodbye to the beautiful mariposas!
Presently, our students are learning and creating activities related to the life cycle of a -rana- frog. Students will be engaged deeply in the process in order to facilitate their understanding-and develop their Spanish language.
Segundo Grado/Second Grade STEM "Las Partes de la Planta"
In the last few weeks, our second graders in theSTEM/Spanish Dual Language begun studying the main parts of a plant. Students are experimenting first hand how a plants grow; they planted a seed which they will monitor and observe their growth and will record their observation in their own journals. Each student planted different seeds in different conditions (different types of dirt, and wet cotton) this way they will compare the growth and the needs of the plant (they will make connection with prior skills learned in the Living and non-living unit). This experimentation will activate their scientific curiosity, help them state hypothesis and state observations and conclusions.
En la ültima semana los alumnos de STEM/Spanish Dual Language de segundo grado comenzaron con el estudio de la anatomia de las plantas y para ello desarrollaron un proyecto que se extendera hasta el final de la unidad; el proyecto consiste en que el alumno siembre su propia semilla. Cada alumno sembro distintas semillas en distintos sustratos (sembraron sobre distintos tipos de tierra asi como sobre algodon hignedo) de esta manera podran establecer comparaciones atendiendo a las necesidades de una planta en su crecimiento (necesidades de la planta como ser vivo; esto nos servird tambien para repasar conceptos aprendidos en la leccion de introduccion a este curso) y sobre todo para desarrollar una mentalidad cientifica y critica (Hipotesis) que partird desde la observacion del crecimiento de su planta en distintas condiciones (Observacion), el seguimiento de sus plantas en estas distintas condiciones (Experimentacion) y el desarrollo de conclusiones y aprendizajes al final de todo el proceso (Conclusion).

October 23-31 is National Red Ribbon Week.
During this week, as a family, CHES will draw awareness to drug prevention.
Students will be educated on the dangers of using and or abusing drugs.
o Each child will receive a silicon bracelet that will serve as a reminder to them to stay drug and bully free.
o Students will also take a pledge to abstain from drugs. The signed pledge will be displayed throughout CHES for all to see.
