7 April 2011 Principal: Mr Luke Reed Assistant Principal - Mission: Ms Janette King Assistant Principal - Curriculum: Mrs Janine Conolly Head of Boarding: Ms Veronica Loudon Business Manager: Mr Paul Withnall Office Manager: Mrs Sue Wegert Welcome to the Easter edition of the MSB Messenger as Term 1 concludes. I thank students and staff for their perse- verance and resilience during this longest of Terms. As the finishing touches are made to students’ mid-semester reports, I know we as staff draw a deal of satisfaction from our students’ progress in this first part of the year. Likewise, while most students and their families will be rightly pleased and reassured by the comments and observations of teachers and carers, a small number of students would do well to take close heed of what is said of their commitment in their studies and their (less than) positive con- tribution to our school community life. Irrespective of what is reflected in each student’s report, the new Term pre- sents all of us with an opportunity to recommit ourselves to engaging respectfully with one another in the grounds, classrooms and residences, to take seriously the learning and teaching responsibilities and opportunities that are before us, and to give of our best, each of us, in so doing. The Easter Feast which falls towards the end of the Autumn vacation is the genesis of our faith and the highpoint of our Christian calendar. In words used to describe the Eucharist, Easter is the ‘summit and source’ of our faith. Just last week I was listening to a speaker on the radio refer to ‘fear’ as the fundamental human emotion. Fear, according to the speaker, is the one emotion that we humans cannot ignore; it cannot be put aside, it must be attended to immedi- ately. Addressing fear and fearfulness is a central feature of the Gospels. The greeting to the young Mary by the an- gel Gabriel was “Don’t be afraid, you enjoy God’s favour”. When caught in a raging storm on the Sea of Galilee, the first words of Jesus who came to the aid of his friends was “It’s me; don’t be afraid”. And following his death, when the risen Jesus appeared to his disciples who were in hiding, fearful for their lives, his first words to them were “Peace be with you”. For believers, the antidote to fear and the basis of our fearlessness is faith in the abiding presence of God. Peace is a sure sign of God’s presence. Perhaps the power of this faith is no more poignant then when we refuse not to believe in those times in which anxiety and stress, worry and concern obscure our awareness of God’s nearness. I pray that all of us belonging to the MSB family will have a rich experience this Easter of the peace that only the risen Jesus can offer. Take care and God bless! Luke Reed MSB College Principal

Assistant Principal - Curriculum REPORTS All student’s Term 1 Progress Profiles will be mailed home this week. It has been a long term, and I am impressed with the level of focus some of the senior students are maintaining as they work hard to achieve their goals. Well done, and keep up the good work! QCS PRACTICE All eligible and interested yr 12 students have been working hard on their QCS preparation. We have been looking at the Multiple Choice papers, and strategies for achieving well. This culminated in a practice Multiple Choice test, where the students worked diligently to improve their skills and achieve well. English and Maths teachers will be revising appropriate sections of this paper in class. Next term we will begin by looking at the Short Response paper and appropriate strategies to employ, and the yr 12 English class will be looking at the QCS Writing task. PARENT / TEACHER INTERVIEWS I would also like to draw to your attention Parent/Teacher/Student conferencing to be held on the 5th May. Interviews are to be held from 4pm until 6pm including refreshments, and I will be available to discuss QTAC and career in-formation for interested year 12 students and Parents/Carers. I am looking forward to seeing you all there! ASSESSMENT CALENDAR The semester 1 assessment calendar will be included in this mail-out – please check carefully for assessment items that will be due during Term 2. Term 2 is a short term, so we will all need to be ‘on the ball’. Assistance from parents / carers with study scheduling for senior students is much appreciated as we work in partnership with our young people. AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM Included with this newsletter is the Cairns Diocese P-10 Australian Curriculum flyer. It provides some information on the curriculum organisation, and the timeline we will be using as we move towards Australian Curriculum content in our junior classes. Here at MSB, we will be teaching Australian Curriculum English, Maths and Science from the beginning of next year, although there may be some units taught in Semester 2 this year. History will follow in 2013. Please take some time to read this information. Many thanks,

Janine Conolly

ARTISTIC PURSUITS On Wednesday 2nd March the Year 11 & Year 12 Visual Arts students travelled to Cairns for an inspirational & motivational trip to a number of Art Galleries. It was a won-derful day that encompassed six different exhibitions and it was a delight to witness the interest and enthusiasm of the students as they experienced a variety of displays during the day. Our first stop was the Tanks complex in the Botanical gardens to view a paint-ing exhibition and a sensory installation which was a totally new experience for most of our students. We then proceeded to the Kickarts gallery to watch an art video presentation and a painting exhibition by artists from Mornington island. Our final destination was the Cairns Regional Gallery where we went on a guided tour of the "Birds of a Feather" exhibition which was inspired by the Chinese bird markets and the "Ramok" Awards which featured the absolute best Australian & NZ artists who use creative glass as an art form. All these exhibitions proved to be extremely interesting and it was a pleasure to accom-pany such an enthusiastic group through this artistic journey. Mrs Josie Lowerson Head of Arts & Technology

AMENDMENT TO LAST NEWSLETTER

My apologies for the incomplete story I submitted last time the recent Touch Football Peninsula Trials saw Thogan Blanket, Pamai Dau, Maryanne Mosby, Annie Gela and Dennis Messa competing. Dennis was selected for the Peninsula Team to compete at the State Touch Football Tournament that is being held on the Gold Coast on 27-29 May, have a great time and play well Den-nis.

Under 19 Peninsula Netball Trials Kyisha Clarmont and Elaine Tamwoy travelled to Innisfail on Friday 11 March as part of the Tableland District Under19 netball team. Facilities were outstanding as the teams played in the new Innisfail State College indoor netball complex. The team came 4th in the inter district competition and Kyisha and Elaine both lifted to a stronger level during the day demonstrating excellent fitness, hand -eye coordination and throwing and catching skill. Elaine made some amazing intercepts and shut down her WA opponents. Kyisha played solidly in the cen-tre court showing unflappable poise against some determined opposition. It was a challenge on court for our players to build the combinations that lead to winning netball but off-court these wonderful representatives of our College forged new friendships with teammates, showing true sportsmanship and team spirit.

U15 Volleyball Peninsula Trials Six of our very best U15 Volleyball players represented the College in the Tablelands Regional Volleyball Teams and attended the Peninsula trials, in Cairns on Friday 18 March 2011. The players were Layla Fauid, Maryanne Mosby, Adele Mene, Jo-Beth Nona, David Ross and Dennis Messa. Every one of these students showed dedication and athleticism in an extremely tough arena.

The Boys team had to play with only five members, however they played incredibly well and fin-ished in fourth place overall. The girls joined forces with the Tropical Cairns North team and played exceptionally well. Three of the four games saw the team win, with outstanding skill and teamwork. Even though the girls did not know each other, the banded together and were magnificent to watch. The fourth game saw some tough competition (against TI). The two teams were basically going point for point, with some really long rallies. Unfortunately, by the smallest of margins, saw our team slotted into second place overall for the day. However Layla and Maryanne were picked as full team members of the Peninsula U15 Volleyball Team and will travel to the Caloundra (Sunshine Coast) in May to attend the U15 State Volleyball Championships and Adele was chosen as a

‘Shadow’ Team member. Well done, congratulations and all the best to these players.

The Cowboys Challenge (Rugby League) Competition has been run over the past few weeks. This is an inter-school competi-tion run by the tablelands Regional Sporting Body. Our boys, Zac Munckton, Dennis Messa, Jack Daniel, Terry Waia, and Trevor Able, have enjoyed every minute of their time on the field. With our College being small we were unable to field a team of our own but the boys slotted into a team with Herberton State School and ended up in third place overall. We are all very proud of their achievements.

U19 Peninsula Basketball trials, 1 April 2011......More on this story later.........

A great motto for sport is ‘Play

hard or go home’ keep up the good work and keep your ears on for more sporting trials, ad-vertised through morning no-tices.

Our students are still competing, very well, in the many local sports -Touch Football Compe-tition, Swimming Club, Basketball, Netball and also in Local Rugby League clubs, with Frankie getting his pic-ture in the local paper.

Cross Country......was run on 5 April, sorry the newsletter closed for entries on the 1 April. Who won? Which House won this sport-ing carnival? You will have to wait for the next newsletter for the exciting news......

MATHS AND SCIENCES NEWS

Craig Terrens – Head of Faculty: Science, Maths, Health and Physical Edu-cation. Term 1 has been a busy and challenging one for our Faculty. Our new staff members have settled in very well and all classes have been engaged in focussed and innovative learning experiences. New pro-grams are being evolved to meet the needs of all our students so that by senior years they can fully partici-pate in the life - learning pathways the year 10 - 12 curriculum offers.

A vital part of planning this year is preparing for the introduction of the National Curriculum in 2012 for the subjects of Science and Maths. This involves comprehensive re – working of the current curriculum to match the National Goals for teaching and learning in Science and Maths. I am happy to discuss any aspects of the National Curriculum as it may apply to students at MSB, with members of the College Community any time at your convenience. Happenings at MSB in our faculty so far in 2011 include:

Use of the new Ecology Science Annex for junior science lessons related to ecology and plant propagation, using the greenhouse.

Setting up the organization for maths students to participate in the National Maths Competition. Many thanks to Mr Andrew Jamieson.

Involvement of students in the integration of science and maths in practical activities and experiments. This is a great combination of resources and enhances the learning experiences for those students involved. Thanks to Kerrianne Darling and Jane McKenzie for organizing this.

Trialling and introduction of the ‘Mathletics’ self paced computer Maths program in year 9 maths to encourage en-thusiasm, participation and success in maths skill building. Thanks to Kerrianne Darling for implementing this inno-vative program.

Senior Biology and Physics are studying body mechanisms (Homeostasis) and Ancient Weapon construction and operation respectively. These Extended Experimental Investigations (EEI’s) take around 4 – 6 weeks to complete and involve extensive teacher and student input. Senior Chemistry students are studying chemical structure as it applies to Gases and SCUBA diving. Thanks to the senior science teaching team Mr Jamieson and Ms Abell for their dedica-tion.

In Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), Ms Pam Dillon and Ms Brooke Radburn have dedicated much time to implement a more action based and participatory approach which is much appreciated by all.

There have been major events such as the swimming sports, organization of trials for Peninsula sports and College cross country preparation which Anne Quinn deserves many thanks for dedicating her time to, on top of driving stu-dent all around the Cairns / Tablelands districts, enabling students to participate.

There has been some inspirational sharing of expertise and ideas brought in by new teachers which I have found very useful in plotting the future of our Faculty, and I especially thank Mr Ben Herrald in this regard.

I thank all members of the faculty for their dedication to their students and the positive progress they have made. Generally, students have also settled into a Term of fruitful study. It is interesting that the topic for Term1 in science for many students was ‘Volcanoes, Tsunamis and Earthquakes’ – unfortunately a very relevant topic given events this year. Our thoughts remain with those affected by these catastrophic events. Enjoy our lucky country and the holiday break. Following are some photos of our Faculty’s activities. Yours Faithfully, Craig Terrens

Baggot St Excursion

In the morning we left on the bus and went to Mrs Schneider’s house. We had an Easter egg hunt in her garden and we ate Indian food cooked by Mr Ash, and then we went back in the bus to Atherton Pool. At the pool we had a swim and played some ball games in the pool and had a game of touch footy on the grass. Then we came back to school. We had a great day! Thank you to Mrs Schneider, Mr Ash, Mrs Van der Zant and Ms Dexine for driving the bus! The Students of Baggot St

What makes a tourist town? Are you getting good service? What happens to a town if tourists don’t come? These questions and more were explored by the Yr 11/12 Tourism and Hospitality students on their excursion

to Yungaburra, Lake Barrine and Malanda recently.

Legal Studies News It’s been a thought provoking term in Legal Studies. Year 12 students have undertaken a major assess-ment task, researching a topic of personal interest and the legislation that surrounds that area. Year 11 students have studied Law in Society, a unit that introduces basic legal and governmental concepts and processes. Highlights have been a visit to the Atherton Magistrates’ Court and opportunity to see the everyday workings of the court room and an excursion to hear Professor Chris Cunneen.

Waiting to enter the courtroom, Flora, Cameron, Hannah, Holly and Taylor. The gravity of courtroom proceedings can be a sobering experience for students

In Week 10 students travelled to Cairns to listen to Professor Chris Cunneen speak about rioting as a re-sponse to police/community relations, restorative and juvenile justice and rates of incarceration in Australia, rates that reflect a growing tendency to imprison and punish rather than address social and economic is-sues. His discussion of violence towards women was especially poignant.

Of course, a trip to Cairns involves a chance to share a meal together and discuss all things legal and political. Mr Terrens joined us for the feisty after-lecture debate.

Thanks to PCAP for assisting with travel costs for our country kids and well done Legal Studies students for a solid term of work. Mrs W

The team will represent our College on 10 June in the inter-school compe-tition in Malanda facing coastal and Tableland school teams.

Reader’s Cup is an initiative of the Children’s Book Council of Australia

We wish these students all the best in their campaign. It demands hours of reading, great recall and attention to detail, the skills of teamwork and commitment to the task.

Sniffing Your Life Away Sniffing aerosols can KILL you.

Sniffing aerosols can GIVE YOU BRAIN DAMAGE .

Sniffing aerosols can GIVE YOU LUNG PROBLEMS .

Sniffing aerosols can MAKE YOUR HEART BEAT SO FAST IT STOPS .

Are you doing this to your body? Is someone you know doing it to their body?

It is not just aerosols – paint, glue, petrol, nail polish, marker pens. They are all dangerous drugs.

These substances contain deadly chemicals and poisons. Tell your family and friends about the dangers of sniffing them. Report anybody who is sniffing – you are not dobbing you are being a good friend doing

them a favour. If someone has been sniffing keep them calm –activity and stress can cause heart problems

and they may die. Call for help if someone passes out. Let the police and ambulance know what they have been sniffing.
