Principal’s Message
Dear Parents/Caregivers, Term 3 has started smoothly with classes quickly settling into routines and structures, whilst being immersed in quality learning experiences. This week we tackle a new first, with our teachers modifying the Parent/Carer conferencing process. Thank you to all our families for their patience and understanding with regards to these changes. 2020 Parent/Carer Teacher Phone Conferences
Premiers Spelling Bee This year we will run a modified school-based version of the Premier’s Spelling Bee. The Spelling Bee will take place on Thursday 27th August. Teachers and students will begin working on the spelling lists in class this week.
9-10am Yr 5-6 10-11am Yr 3-6 Canberra Excursion Unfortunately due to COVID-19 the School has made the decision to cancel the Yr 6 major excursion to Canberra. The Stage 3 teachers understand just how disappointing this will be for our Yr 6 students and are currently working on an alternate educational experience. Please contact the office should your require a refund. Education Week Our school Education Week activates will commence in Week 4, so please make sure that you check in with our Deni South School Happenings page on Facebook. The teachers and students have been preparing some wonderful items and activities to share with our families in this virtual space. Celebrating 100 Days of Learning Friday 24th July our Kindergarten students participated in a carefully planned day of fun, celebrating 100 days of learning. Thank you to Mr Morris, Kara, Mrs Selleck, Mrs Henson and Miss Sutton for all their hard work in creating engaging activities to help mark and celebrate this special milestone.
Peer Support Our successful Peer Support program is now in its second week and the students have really enjoyed working together to develop, effective communication, problem solving and collaborative skills. National Tree Planting Day
To help celebrate National Tree Planting Day, last Friday, all students K-6 took up the opportunity to rejuvenate some of our school gardens and I think you will agree that the end results look amazing! Thank you to Mrs Honey and her father Ged Smith
for putting so much effort into the planning phase of this day. School Photos The date for School Photos has been brought forward to Tuesday 25th August. Envelopes will be sent home this week. Child Protection Education Term 3 Child Protection lessons and activities are an important component of K-6 education in all NSW schools. During Term 3 children in Kindergarten to Year 6 will participate in Child Protection lessons either as part of their PD/H/PE activities or specific Child Protection lessons. These lessons aim to assist children in developing skills in:
Recognising and responding to unsafe situations.
Strengthening attitudes and values related to equality, respect and responsibility.
Recognising appropriate and inappropriate behaviours.
Child Protection education incorporates teaching and learning in 3 broad themes:
Recognising abuse.
Power in relationships.
Protective strategies.
Lessons can deal with sensitive issues. All children must feel safe, comfortable and confident when dealing with Child Protection issues. If you have any questions or concerns about your child participating in Child Protection activities please contact your class teacher or the school, as soon as possible. Stay safe and remember to look after your health, including your wellbeing, over the coming weeks.

Fishing For Friends and Golfing with the Stars Last week, two school well being programs recommenced after a one term recess. On Tuesday afternoon, two students travelled to the Deniliquin Golf Club practice fairway and enjoyed hitting a bucket of golf balls using either a 7 iron or driver. Some good shots were hit and both students can look forward to using their golfing skills on the club fairways next week.
On Thursday afternoon, a small group of students ventured to the Werrapankata Dam to catch that elusive fish. Everyone had fun talking about their personal fishing stories, while casting lines in the beautiful winter sunshine.
There was excitement when Marg Rankin caught a fish, but unfortunately it was a European Carp. It was not returned to the dam, and a quick on the spot lesson took place, about why carp is a pest in our waterways. Group numbers are small at present, due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Safe COVID-19 practices are implemented during our well being excursions.
Thanks to Purtills for providing a 12 seater bus to transport students for fishing and Marg Rankin and Chelsea Jefferies for their assistance on the day.
Both programs will continue this week, with other students. Philip Hodgkinson School Chaplain
Bus News All school bus travellers must have a current 2020 bus pass to travel on school buses and this pass must be carried with you at all times as drivers will be checking.
