PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGES
Issue 16, 2017
Wednesday 25 October, 2017
WELCOME TO NEW STAFF
I would like to welcome two new staff to our Opaheke
School community, Miss Claire Hudson and Miss Sophie
Glen. I am sure their classes, Room 6 and Room 24 are
making them feel welcome.
My name is Claire Hudson and I have
been teaching for four years. I have
lived locally for my entire life and
attended nearby schools growing up. I
have come from Papakura Central
school where I taught in a Year 5 and
6 digital classroom. My hobbies
include netball, reading and going
fishing with my family. I am very
excited to be teaching at Opaheke
school after completing a practicum
here while I was training to become a
teacher.
Kia Ora everyone, my name is Sophie
Glen and I am the new Classroom
Teacher of Room 24. I’ve recently
moved to Opaheke School from
Reremoana School in Wattle Downs
where I taught for nearly four years.
This isn’t my first experience at
Opaheke School, I completed my final
Practicum back in 2013 and really
enjoyed my time here. I have grown
up in the Papakura and Drury area
and live locally, so I know the area
well. I have a passion for bringing
creativity to the classroom, whether it
be fun and different ways of learning,
or simply through creating a colourful and engaging
environment to learn in. Out of school I am a bit of a foodie; I
love to cook but mainly I love to try out new and exciting
places to eat. I’ve also recently caught the travel bug and have
just returned from Europe. I’m very pleased to be onboard at
Opaheke School and look forward to getting to know you all!
We farewelled Mrs Cynthia Watson who has gone on long term leave. We look forward to seeing Mrs Watson back in 2019. We welcome Mrs Kathleen Tolmie to the Junior Hub for this term.
FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR CARNIVAL
PREPARATIONS
School parents, Mrs Claire Hart and her Carnival
Committee have been busy making preparations for the
Carnival which will take place on Friday 10 November.
Classes are also beginning to make signs and know the
sort of exhibits and competitions that they may enter.
ATTITUDE
Last Thursday evening the Attitude
Programme held a parent meeting. This
engaging and quite entertaining evening was to
inform parents of what to expect in the world
their teenagers are growing up in - a world
which has
changed
over the
years since
they
themselves
were
teenagers.
Thirty Three people attended the event.
The Attitude Programme is a series of
assemblies and workshops presented to our
Year 7 and 8 students. The PTA have kindly
funded this programme, run for the first time
at our school.

Road Patrol Helpers
/ Lunch Room
Helpers / PTA
We need more
parents to step up and help our school
community. Next year we will need to replace
nearly half of the helpers on the PTA, Road
Patrol and Friday lunch room as our current
helpers leave because their children are moving
on to high school. We are always looking for
parents, caregivers or grandparents to help, you
won't get locked in to something - we all share
the load and the more people we get on board
the less we have to carry.
This year we have had a great bunch of parents
help out but we need more — can you spare 25
minutes in the morning or afternoons and help
our children cross safely at the Road Crossings.
We also have had a great bunch of helpers on the
PTA and Lunch room. We need your help please
don't just sit back and think someone else will do
it, WE NEED YOU! so put your hand up, come
help make the school your own and keep up the
work of the excellent PTA & School community
we have. Please leave your name at the school
office. Kind Regards Keith Buchan (PTA)

What’s been going on in Room Three
Year 8?
Our annual Book Week Parade went off with a splash of red and blue as Room 3 dressed up as Thing 1 from Doctor Seuss. Room 2 came along for the ride as Thing 2
Whilst studying our recent measurement unit we thought we would take advantage of the beautiful sunshine and we took our learning outdoors. Using the knowledge we had
learned in class, we used the measuring wheels and tape and measured the area and perimeter of the fields, courts and playground.
An important part of being a 21st Century Learner is to share our knowledge with other. Here are some of Room 2’s students sharing what they learned with ratios.

SPECIAL THANKS TO…..
THANKS PTA
Next time you
go into the hall
you will notice
one big change.
We now have 4
large heat
pumps. These
heat pumps will mean that we can heat
the hall in the winter months - no more
cold morning assemblies. It will also
mean that we can cool the hall during the
summer months - no more hot concerts
on grandparents day! Just remember
that we do need to keep the hall doors
and windows closed during the concerts
for the air conditioning to work properly.
Thanks to the PTA for organising and
funding these and the BOT for covering
the ongoing costs.
