Centennial Elementary

School

Dear Centennial Families,

We are off to a wonderful start to the school year! We have seen such growth in all students in the 1 ½ months we have been in school so far and plan to see much more growth in the coming months. In each class, our students receive rigorous instruction tied to Harrison Curriculum Maps and Common Core Standards. Your child/children may be using terms such as objectives and DOLs. Our objectives are what students need to know and be able to do while our DOLS, Demonstrations of Learning, are how the students show their teachers that they have mastered the concept. Ask your child what their objectives and DOLs were for the day and you will be astounded by what they learn each day.

We are excited about our implementation of the 3 Rs. Our schoolwide behavior system uses the 3 Rs and focuses on Centennial Panthers being Ready, Respectful, and Responsible. As part of our behavior system, we are using Panther Passes and offering incentives when students fill up a Panther Pass. It is wonderful to see our students owning their learning, get excited about the positive feedback they are receiving, and they are filling up multiple Panther Passes in a week. We have some very important events this month! We have Picture Day on October 2nd and want to ensure all students are here to get their pictures taken. In addition, our Million Man March and Walk to School Day are on October 10th. We want to invite all caregivers to come to our Million Father March. Another flyer will be sent home with more details. We look forward to seeing all families at conferences and will send more information home about this in a few weeks. We appreciate your support in reaching our mission of “Achievement NOW” – we believe our scholars are capable of the highest expectations. Please continue to focus on the three things each day that will help your child be successful: 1. Students arrive to school on time. 2. Students read each night. 3. Students do their homework each night. Thank you for your ongoing support! We are off to a great start and look forward to a wonderful year!

Kindergarten News Kindergarten is in full swing and boy are we working hard! We have been learning letters and sounds, sight words and beginning reading skills. Ask your child about the characters and settings in the books that you read at home. Also, we have been working on rhyming, having them practice this at home will help them better understand rhyming. We have also learned the important skill of predicting in a story and checking our guesses. Writing finds us writing letters and using correct letter formation as well as beginning writing skills. A good idea for at home is to give your student a notebook and ask them to draw and write about what they did during the day or about a story. It is okay if things are not spelled correctly as we are encouraging them to write the sounds they hear. Counting, number writing, greater than, less than and equal amounts continue to be our focus in math. As the weather is starting to turn colder, we ask that you please send an appropriate jacket with your child each day. The weather can change very quickly and we don’t want any sick kids. Please also make sure that any jackets, hats or gloves are labeled, with their name, so that if they are misplaced, they can be returned. If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to contact us. Thank you for your support! The Kindergarten Team Mrs. Washburn, Ms. Kimsey, Mrs. King, and Mrs. Fisk

First Grade News

We are off to a great start! It has been great working with your child. In reading and writing we are excited to be using a program called Wonders. In reading we are focusing on rhyming, letter sounds, identifying details in a text, and writing the sounds we hear. In writing we are creating a plan from a text and writing a topic sentence and detail sentences. In math we are continuing to practice addition and subtraction fluency through working with number sentences, number bonds, and word problems. We have practiced using multiple strategies including but not limited to 5 group cards, fingers, counting on and drawing a picture. Please keep an eye out for parent tip sheets that may help you understand the Eureka strategies and how you can help your child. In science we will continue learning about the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. In social studies we will continue to explore timelines and events.

Third Grade News

4th Grade News

4th grade is now almost done with our first quarter! A couple reminders: Your child’s lunch time is at 11:20. Specials is at 10:15 on Mondays and 8:45 the rest of the week. Class pictures will be happening October 2nd. Students were already sent home with a form to order pictures. There is no school on Monday, October 7th for a Teacher Workday. Student Conferences are coming up on the evening of October 16th. On October 17th and 18th, there will be no school for Parent/Teacher Conferences. Please look out for emails, and reminder papers will be sent home with your child as these dates get closer. In math, we have completed Unit 2. This unit allowed students to review place value concepts while building fluency with decomposing, or converting from largest to smaller units. They learned the relative sizes of measurements units. In Unit 3 students use place value understanding and visual representations to solve multiplications and division problems with multi-digit numbers. Students are beginning to investigate formulas for area and perimeter. (Continued on next page)

We love 3rd grade! Reading is floating right along. We are still working on Module 1 of our Wit and Wisdom curriculum which is all about the sea. Students recently started investigating why and how scientists explore sea creatures. The sea creatures we are currently exploring are sharks and will be moving on to giant squid all while looking into text features and illustrations. Students are able to ask and answer questions, discover main ideas and key details of the text. We will be continuing our sea exploration for another week or two and then we are off into space!

In math, we are getting into our second unit of Eureka. Throughout this unit we will be focusing on Elapsed Time, Measurement, and Rounding to the nearest 10 and nearest 100. Students will learn how to explain how much time has passed, while being able to real time on a number line and analog clock. We will focus on measurement units of mass and volume involving grams, kilograms, milliliters, and liters. Students will develop estimating skills by rounding numbers.

Writing with Mrs. Ginster has started and third grade is doing an amazing job! Together we have started created a notebook to keep all our notes in an organized place. We are starting with expository text – reading about a topic and writing to a prompt. We have gone through the entire writing process together already reading and writing about hurricanes. Students will read and write about a variety of topics – weather, animals, and Colorado history just to name a few! Mrs. Ginster is excited for this change and continues to look forward in teaching writing to all third grade this year! The best way you can support your third grader is to ensure they are working on their homework packet AND turning it in! This includes the reading log on the back of the cover. The third grade expectation is that third graders are reading 20 minutes a night – including the weekends.

4th Grade News (continued) This month in ELA students will be continuing with Module 1, but now we will be looking at the figurative great heart. They will explore the ideas of how different characters in poems show great heart by being generous, courageous, and or heroic. They will have the opportunity to look closely at the chapter book Love That Dog by Sharon Creech, which is written in the form of short poems. Students will also be introduced to a variety of different poets and poems that are referred to in Love That Dog. They will be able to identify what a poem is by the end of the module and what the six different elements of poetry are. We will continue to be writing informative paragraphs and then eventually move to an informative essay by the end of this module.

5th Grade News

In the month of October, fifth grade will be wrapping up module one. Throughout this module students built knowledge of American Westward Expansion. While learning about the Nez Perce culture students were expected to explain how cultural beliefs and values guide people. The next upcoming module teaches our students the masterful use of wordplay. Students will get an in depth understanding of homophones, homographs and idiomatic expressions. Understanding the importance of figurative language and the power of words will further student experience in reading, writing, and the brilliant world around them. 5th grade Math is moving along great! Fifth graders are working hard on unit 2 where they are learning about different strategies to multiply. Toward the end of the quarter we will start learning strategies to divide and apply those strategies to real-world problems. Students should be working on their multiplication fluency at home to help them here at school. If you would like to work with your student on arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division that would be a huge help throughout the year!

Special Education News This year is flying by as we begin October already! You can look forward to Picture Day on October 2nd! Parent/Teacher Conferences will be coming the third week of this month. Look for further details as they are solidified. The weather is changing as it does all the time in Colorado! The mornings are cool and the afternoons are warm. Please have your students dress accordingly each day. Always remember, routines are important! Please make sure that you are keeping those bedtime routines in place throughout the year. Ask your student what he/she learned today? You will be amazed at what they tell you.
