Principal

This reinforces what a wonderful staff we have here at Two Rocks Primary School from the Cleaners and Gardener through to the Education Assistants and Teachers as well as the fantastic administration staff who are all working to ensure that our won-derful students who are striving to achieve their best, have the best possible learning environment with top quality teachers. As I said previously, it takes the whole staff to make a successful great school.

Our Year 6 students went to Albany this week on camp, they were accompanied by their teachers Mrs Douce and Mrs Whittle as well as Mr Schweda and Mrs Pinches. They have all been a credit to the school and have all had a great time as the photos on the Face book page can attest.

The next two weeks are NAPLAN testing weeks when all of our students in Years 3 and 5 participate in the national testing program online utilising the iPads. Our other students in years 2, 4 and 6 will participate in the ‘in between years’ testing in order that we can track their progress.

Book fair commences on Friday 24th May through to Thursday 30th May. All of our students get the chance to purchase books, the profits of which, are utilised to pur-chase resources for the school.

Our Cross Country races will take place on Friday 24th May the successful competitors will be representing our school at Gingin DHS on Friday 7th June. This is once again organised by Mr Schweda.

We have John Fleming visiting the school on 30th and 31st May to coach and conference the staff and to provide us with feedback regarding our progress and planning. Friday 31st May is a pupil free day as is WA day on Monday 3rd June.

It has come to my attention that there has been an array of accusations on a Face Book page, I have checked with police and have ascertained that they are untrue and are in fact libellous. Nothing should be printed about anyone including myself without first verifying the truth of the statement as there are extreme legal penalties for anyone caught. I have been advised that any such continued conversations are libellous and I will consider taking legal action. I can confirm that the children are perfectly safe at school, they are in a secured and monitored environment and it is extremely mischievous for anyone to suggest otherwise. I would however like to thank the parents who contacted me to verify the information was incorrect.

Kindy - There is so much happening in Kindy! During Integrated Learning, our class has a new dramatic play area; a pet shop! The children are enjoying playing in the pet shop. They have been using money to buy pets, and have demonstrated how to look after pets. This is a wonderful opportunity for oral language development. The children have also been working in teams to sort the pets into the correct groups and count the pets. Plus they have made secret Mother’s Day Sugar Scrub, which smells so yummy.

In Literacy, the Kindy student’s have demonstrated perseverance when pegging alphabet pegs on the letters of their name and they are showing improvement in their pencil grip and letter formation when doing their Rainbow Writing. This week they have learnt the ‘e’ sound.

In Numeracy, the children applied positional language and were asking “How tall is your tower?” to build their towers in a team. Also,

they have had lots of opportunities to use play dough

to support fine motor skills. They had to put petals

onto the flowers and dots onto the ladybirds.

Pre-Primary

We have had a great start to Term 2! All the students and teachers are happy to be back and we have lots planned.

In Literacy we are continuing to learn how to use Literacy Planet which develops many needed skills.

In Numeracy we have been learning about patterns and always have a lot of fun in our Math's rotations!

Our HASS unit this Term is all about Family and in Chemical Sciences we will be learning about the different materials in our world! We have a great STEM project planned for later on this Term!

Year 1

During English, students are beginning to explore the structure and language features of Information Reports. Students will then begin to research animals before constructing their own report to share with their peers.

Recent Mathematics lessons have involved students developing their ability to order, count and add together quantities of Australian money.

The focus in Science for Term 2 will be Chemical Sciences and will see students investigate the properties of different food types and how they change when either heated or cooled.

What’s happening...cont’d

Year 2

In Literacy, we have been looking at the features of a narrative, what an effective narrative includes and have started to design our main character to write our own narrative.

In Maths, we have been learning about double digit addition and have been practising our self-talk with regrouping to assist us with our calculations.

In STEM, we have been looking at earthworms and their habitats. We have been covering biological sciences and have begun to incorporate the chemical sciences with sustainability. We are looking at the Three R’s - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and then linking this to reducing our rubbish in our classroom by using our Crunch and Sip scraps to feed our new classmates, the earthworms!

Year 3

The Year 3s have been talking about stranger danger in our classroom. We went through what the acronym S.M.A.R.T means and what we could do if we come across a stranger. We brainstormed as a group where some safe zones were and who we would be able to talk to if we ever got into trouble. Our teachers were very impressed with the maturity we have shown throughout this topic as well as the ideas we came up with. Year 4

The Year 4’s have been using and practicing a variety of strategies to solve complex subtraction problems. They are also enjoying completing their CLIC’s each week where students practice their Number skills.

In Literacy, students have been researching, planning and writing an information report on vehicles. They have learnt a lot about text structure and how to inform their audience in an engaging way. Year 5

In Literacy we have been creating 'Stellar Sentences' and learning how a variety of sentence types can make our writing more interesting. We have been expanding our vocabulary in VCOP through our word of the week, coming up with a variety of synonyms for new and known words. We have been continuing on with our novel studies both independently and as a whole class where we have been exploring the characters and themes associated with the text.

We have been expanding our multiplication strategies and exploring Mass using every day items. We are becoming faster in our warm-ups and have been continuing to work out what mental math strategy can best be applied to solve a problem. We are becoming very good at using CUBES to help us solve worded problems.

We are very lucky to have several guests in our room this term, students who are learning to be teachers. They have been very helpful and we are busy showing them what a wonderful cohort we are. We are also getting very excited for our camp in Week 7. Year 6

In English, we wrote a prediction on what we think camp will be like. We asked ourselves what we might enjoy and what might be challenging and what will be a new experience.

In Maths, we have been focussing on addition and subtraction of tenths and hundredths

We have been discussing the five keys to success, social skills, getting along, organisation, resilience, perseverance and confidence. All of these will be great tools to take with us to Albany.

Year 6 Camp Itinerary This week the Year 6's are down in Albany on camp. On Tuesday we are visiting the Albany Residency Museums, climbing on board a replica of The Amity and climbing Mt Clarence. On Wednesday we are visiting Whale World and the new National ANZAC Centre. On Thursday we are visiting the Pentland Alpaca Stud and Animal Farm. There is no doubt that after this adventurous week, we will be coming home exhausted with wonderful memories to cherish forever.
