UWA BRAIN BEE CHALLENGE - STATE FINALSCongratulations to the four year 10 students, Joel Thomas, Dylan Palmer, Keely Flanagan and Gerard Newman, who competed in the WA State fi nals of the 2016 Australia-New Zealand Brain Bee Challenge last term. Eighty-three students from 15 schools around the State competed in this brain-teasing team challenge and neuroscience quiz to test their knowledge of the brain and how it works. The students also toured UWA’s world-class neuroscience facilities and met some of the university’s leading scientifi c researchers.

Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) National Coordinator and neuroscientist, Professor Vaughan Macefi eld, said the competition gave students a feel for what a career in neuroscience might be like.

Mrs Maree said the Esperance students performed very well at UWA, achieving equal fourth placement with some other schools.

Many thanks to Mrs Maree for her role in preparing the students and to Mr Maree who provided the transport service.

TRY-A-TRADE DAYThe annual Try-A-Trade was on again for students at Esperance Senior High School recently. The purpose of the day was to raise student awareness of the building industry and the courses that are on offer for students to help start their career. Twenty-six year 9 students participated in three trades over three days, plumbing, bricklaying and carpentry, held at the Trade Training Centre and local TAFE.

The event was a combined effort of a variety of personnel involved in the traditional trades industry. The program was made possible by the Construction Training Fund that supports events like Try-A-Trade. South Regional TAFE supplied the lecturers, Kath Brown from Esperance, and Rod Connell and Ron Grey from Albany. The Master Builders Association (MBA), through its local members, supplied materials and their time.

The students learned skills in each of the trades by completing activities set up by the TAFE lecturers. They also had the opportunity to ask questions of the tradesmen about the building industry. At the end of the three days, the students were presented with a certifi cate of participation, and a barbecue was held to reward them for their excellent effort and behaviour.

We would like to thank local builders, Brett Partington and Rob Donaldson, for donating some of their workforce, including Cam Willsher and Kyle Lawrence. Thank you also to the teachers who helped out with organising the students, equipment and materials: Mr Myers and Mr Bezuidenhout.

BEAUTY THERAPY STUDENTS IN TRAINING

At the end of last term, some of the Girls Academy students treated a group of year 6 Nulsen Primary School students to a professional manicure. The younger students felt very pampered and the high school students enjoyed their ‘Life in the Day of a Beauty Therapist’. The event was held in the on-campus South Regional TAFE hair and beauty salon.

RESILIENCY FOCUSYouth Focus VisitThis week we have a fl yer attached that includes a list of support resources that was given to year 9 students by Youth Focus when their representative, Catherine Ashton, ran a workshop on the topic of mental health last term. The resources sheet may assist parents/carers and students in times of need.

Tips on EFFECTIVE STUDYTo help students cope with the pressures of exams, it is critical that effective revision strategies are developed and adopted. The attached article on The Science of Revision may help to improve students’ revision techniques. With exams on the horizon this semster for year 10, 11 and 12 students, these tips are a timely reminder to students on how to study effectively. Some won’t agree with the music tip!Other information on study skills can be accessed by visiting the following website: http://www.discoverbusiness.us/learning/ or by typing ‘study skills’ in the search box of the Esperance Senior High School webpage.

Teen Mental Health First AidThis semester, the Lead School Psychologist in the Goldfi elds region, Mr Brett Kipling, will continue to deliver the Teen Mental Health First Aid program to the year 10 Health classes. The students will receive their own Teen Mental Health First Aid booklet and we encourage parents/carers to view the information in the book and discuss this with their children.

A huge thank you to Mr Kipling for his contribution to the year 10 health program in this area.

WATER WISE INFRASTRUCTURE GRANT - School FarmCongratulations to the Esperance Senior High School Farm Training Centre for receiving a Water Wise Schools’ grant of $2000 from the Waste Authority Services.

The School Farm acknowledges that the Water Wise Schools Program is supported by the Western Australian Waste Authority through the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account.

Agricultural teacher at the School Farm, Mr Bruce Fitzpatrick, said the grant was a welcome addition to the farm’s waste wise program, and is being used by the students to set up a garden facility. Students have already used the grant to purchase a new shredder to be used for creating compost, a new brick presser to create paper fi re lighting bricks and plants, and reticulation for their garden.

CONSULTATION BY THE COMMISSIONER FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE Mr Colin Pettit, Commissioner for Children and Young People WA, is undertaking a survey seeking student feedback across the State about young people’s views on school and learning.

Esperance Senior High School has been chosen to be part of this research, with year 7 and year 10 students being asked to complete a survey on these topics.

Parents/carers and students need to give permission for this to occur, hence the information to parents sheets that years 7 and 10 students were given this week in form class. Forms need to be returned to the Junior Campus offi ce (year 7s) and the front offi ce (year 10s) by Wednesday, 3rd August. There is a limit to the number of students participating in the survey; therefore, as permission forms come back, the students will be allocated a place until all available places are fi lled.

The survey will be conducted on Thursday, 11th August in the Library from 9am - to 9:35am for year 7 students, and 9:35am to 10:10am for year 10 students.

The Commissioner will share fi ndings with all participants and the broader community at the conclusion of the project in late 2016/early 2017.

NATIONALLY CONSISTANT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITYOur school is part of a national project about students with disability and/or learning diffi culties.

We have been asked to provide data about the number and learning needs of children at our school. The name of the school and the name of the students will not be reported. Information about the different types of needs and the programs and resources the school uses to overcome barriers and support children with special educational needs will be collected.

We believe it is important to contribute to this because it will help Governments and the Education Department develop better policies that acknowledge the level of resources required in schools to meet the needs of all students in Western Australia.

If you would like to learn more about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data for School Students with Disability, you can visit this website: http://det.wa.edu.au/supportforschools”.

Year 7 Newsletter: July 2016 I can’t believe that one whole semester is done and dusted, and there is only one more to go before our year 7s will be the seasoned high school students in the Junior Campus! A big welcome to new students, parents and carers, and welcome back to those who have been with us since the start of the year. My name is Jodie Falconbridge, and as the Year 7 Coordinator, my primary role is pastoral care. I encourage parents and carers to contact me if they have any concerns or queries about their child at school, or if they would like to provide feedback or share any ideas.

Information and Announcements

Tournament of Minds Our Tournament of Minds teams are well under way in their preparation for the 2016 tournament. It certainly seems like they are having a ball, and I wish them all the best. As I have previously stated, our school has a proud and enviable record of participation and success. We have four teams participating again this year, including Language Literature, Social Science, Applied Technology and Maths Engineering. A heartfelt thank you to the staff and parents who make our participation possible. New Year 7 School Citizen Rewards As most parents and carers are aware, we like to reward students for their positive behaviours through the Mini Merit system at our school. The extrinsic rewards that students receive as a result of this system are only one aspect of this. The system is also about the intrinsic rewards students feel when they make good choices. This overt personal recognition of their own positive traits is encouraged through the recognition given to them by staff and peers. This then encourages the continuation of those choices and, at the same time, provides examples of positive behaviours for all students. Ultimately, this helps to create the positive and supportive culture we wish to maintain at Esperance Senior High School. To add to this encouragement, I am going to introduce a Year 7 Citizen Reward to our morning assemblies. The goal is for students to nominate their peers for being positive role models in their care for others. This idea came to me as a result of being the recipient of the kindness and generosity of the year 7 students. Like most teachers, I have had days where I’ve dropped an ocean of papers and students have helped me battle the wind and chase them down; and I have walked to and from classes with impossible armloads of books, and students have offered their help. With those same armloads, I have stared down shut doors, willing them to open of their own accord, and passing students have come to the rescue without even being asked. I also feel appreciative when students instigate conversations that show a selfless interest in others. Over and over I have been struck by the thoughtful, caring and generous nature of our students, and this is something we value and encourage at school. By allowing students to nominate their peers each fortnight, and by reading out the nominations and drawing a winner at assemblies, the same philosophy of the Mini Merit system will be at work. It will allow students to recognise their own strengths; it will encourage nomination recipients to continue their behaviours while also encouraging others to adopt them; and it will contribute to our positive school culture and our wider community. Year 7 Student Councillors Congratulations to Tagen Jones, Mary Newton, Marissa Dattani and Adam Maccan who were elected as our Year 7 Student Councillors for 2016. Each of these students is worthy of the position, and I know that they will be exceptional in their leadership roles and will be positive role models for the school. Congratulations also to all of the other students who were nominated. Each year our school leadership changes, so you may very well become Student Councillors in the future. I asked our new Councillors to write a short article about their experiences of high school for this newsletter. The parameters were broad, and so they have each contributed a fresh and interesting insight into the school. If anyone has a child starting high school next year, your child might find some of these words of wisdom and experience helpful.

2016 Student Councillors On All Things High School

First Semester of High School – by Marissa Datanni We’ve completed our first semester of high school, and although it’s been a big adjustment, it’s been lots of fun, too. While we were all adapting to lugging our heavy bags around and learning teachers’ names, it was also enjoyable having new classes and a variety of teachers; and while we were getting over the concept of having lunch at recess, new friendships also began to form. The taster classes were fantastic, but getting to them was a problem, indeed. Who knew the school was so gigantic! Then there was the timetable losing. We didn’t realise that timetables could fly or walk away, or that they enjoyed the washing machine and being torn up so much. In Term Two, Clubs began. We were looking forward to these so much that in Period 7 on a Tuesday, all anyone could talk about was Clubs. “What club are you doing?” was whispered to neighbours as we counted down the minutes to our first Clubs. The library’s new decorating was also a wonderful sight to behold. From the murals to the new seating and the computers - everything looked marvellous! The Truth about High School – by Tagen Jones Hi, my name is Tagen Jones, and I’m an Esperance Senior High School student. Some people may think that moving to high school is big and scary, but it isn’t. Newcomers will be very surprised at how caring and helpful all of the students and staff are. People may try and scare you by saying that there is a bully around every corner waiting to flush your head down the toilet, but Esperance Senior High School is very anti-bullying, so don’t be scared. In the first couple of weeks you may get lost, but don’t worry, if you do – just ask for help. The Perks of Being a High School Student – by Adam Maccan My time in high school has been very enjoyable because there are more things to do. Students have many different teachers, and we can also do taster classes like Woodwork, Agriculture and Media where we learn all about Stop Motion Pro. We also have longer Physical Education classes, which are great for people who enjoy that, and there is an equal focus on Maths, Science, English and Humanities and Social Sciences. There are Student Councillors for each year level, which gives every student the opportunity to join the team, and there is a junior and senior campus that separates the younger and older kids. There are also many other things we can get involved in, like Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards, the School Ball in Years 11 and 12, TOM and Country Week. Some of the things that I enjoy are different classes and more sporting facilities like hockey and soccer goals. In conclusion, there are many more opportunities in high school: more classes, more teachers, more facilities, more sporting fields and more fun. P.S When you first get to the school, you may think that you will get lost, but you won’t really.

Starting High School and the Role of Student Councillors – by Mary Newton Hi, my name is Mary Newton, and I am one of the four Year 7 Student Councillors for 2016. Being Student Councillor gives you the opportunity to make new friends and to get to know more of the people at school. I like being a Councillor because it helps me to build up my confidence and it brings me closer to new people. When students first come to high school, they might find it a bit nerve-racking if they let themselves think scary thoughts like the possibility of not so friendly students, timetables and having lots of teachers. Instead of focusing on these, new students need to focus on the positives and what actually happens like making many new friends, taster classes, nice teachers and socialising at lunch and recess. For me, starting high school was difficult at first because I had trouble finding some of my classes, but the way I fixed this problem was by asking older students (they are friendly too) and teachers where certain classes were. After a few weeks, you know the school and getting to classes is easy. If students have any problems or enquiries, they can talk to the Student Councillors who will help them through. Esperance Senior High School Councillors put others before themselves so we can have a friendly environment at school. Jodie Falconbridge Year 7 Coordinator

Welcome back to Term 3! It’s great to see the year 8s getting back into the swing of school life after the holidays. Year 9 Option Selections Students have now received their option selection sheets for choosing their subjects for year 9. In year 9, students will begin to choose subjects that they are interested in from the tasters that they have completed in years 7 and 8. It is important to choose carefully and ensure your form is received promptly, as popular subjects tend to fill up and students may miss out on their preferred options. Country Week I would like to congratulate the following year 8 students who competed in Country Week this year: Zac Fletcher for Hockey, Macey Tromp for Dance, Lilly Henning for soccer and Sacha Drew for Soccer. Country Week is generally for senior school students, so it is a huge achievement to make a Country Week team in year 8. I would like to congratulate each of these students on their excellent behaviour throughout the week.

Year 9 Health Education This term, year 9 students will be studying Nutrition and Lifestyle Diseases in Health Education. Students will learn to identify what makes a healthy diet, how to read food labels, and how to determine serving sizes. They will then look at the link between poor nutrition and some lifestyle diseases, such as diabetes type 2, obesity and some cancers. Lifestyle diseases are almost wholly preventable. Educating students to make good decisions regarding their nutrition and lifestyle behaviour choices now will, hopefully, see them avoid becoming a ‘statistic’ in the future. Girls Football Esperance Senior High School will be hosting the 2016 Girls Football carnival. All girls in year 9 are eligible to try out for the team. The carnival will be held later in term 3, so start training! Year 10 Option Selections for 2017 Students have now received their option selection sheets for choosing their subjects for year 10. In year 10, students will begin to choose subjects that they are interested in from options that they have completed in years 8 and 9. As well, they need to consider career interests and pathways in Upper School when making their selection. It is important to choose carefully and ensure your form is received promptly, as popular subjects tend to fill up and students may miss out on their preferred options. Final Word I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the Year 9’s who represented ESHS at Country Week this year. It is a big feather in your caps to represent the school at that level. As semester 2 begins, I would like to remind all year 9 students to continue to give their best effort in all their classes. You can do this by being on time, being prepared for class, asking for assistance if you don’t understand, and following instructions. If you have any queries, please come and see me in the Health and Physical Education office. Craig Snow Year 9 Coordinator
