Principal’s Newsletter 17th August 2018 Dear Parents and Carers, It’s hard to believe we’re half way through a very busy term. I would like to take this opportunity again to thank the CWA who visited the school last week. They are great supporters of the school and provide the awards for the Year 10 Formal. This year they will double their financial contribution which is amazing. They also presented the school with sizzle muffs and puzzle mats made by Sue and Lois. We have already tried them out. During Semester 1 the school participated in a Transport Review with the aim of having direct transport to the campuses. This would be much better option for every student and avoid all of the congestion issues we are having at the school but will involve a rerouting of all the bus routes and change in pick up and drop off times. There will also be more centralised pick up and drop off spots in line with the policy of the department. We are unsure when this might happen but we intend to give parents plenty of notice about the proposed changes and work together to ensure a smooth transition. We have spent the week having fun with science as part of Science Week. The theme is Game Changers and Change Makers so there’s been lots of opportunities to experiment and explore. Thank you to all those parents who completed the Parent Opinion Survey. Your feedback is important and assists us to move forward as a school so I urge you to complete the survey before 26th August if you haven’t done so already. The month of August is important as we take the opportunity to celebrate the amazing work and the contribution of our Education Support Staff to the school. They make a difference in classrooms, the administration, ICT, Allied Health and of course the amazing Café 11. Truly a great group of workers and so committed to our students. On Wednesday a group of students from BRC participated in the Metro All Abilities Netball Championships run at the State Netball Centre. They were undefeated champions but even better I received this email from Kirshy McAinch Principal Bendigo SDS: ‘Hi Marie I just wanted to pass on some positive feedback from my staff to yours. Last Thursday, we had a team of very keen netballers attend the All Abilities tournament at Royal Park for the first time. Our kids have never played in this type of tournament before, and for many of them, it was their first foray into netball altogether. The second team they came up against was from your school. My staff came back with tears in their eyes explaining to me the sportsmanship of your team. The kids on your team could see that our students were new to the game and began to go out of their way to support our team on the court. They ‘fumble’ the ball, giving our students the opportunity to take possession, ‘accidently’ threw it out of bounds so our students could throw the ball into play and ‘missed’ a few goals that enabled our defenders the chance to intercept. They also heartily applauded when our students scored their first goal for the tournament. The sportsmanship of your students enabled ours to gain some confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment in the game. Please thank your students and staff on our behalf for the amazing support they gave our students and their positive contribution to making the tournament a celebration of true inclusion for students of all abilities’ We are very proud of our students. I take this opportunity to thank the Finance sub-committee and the School Council for the excellent work they do for the school. It is greatly appreciated. I will be taking Long Service Leave from 23rd August until 10th September. Caitriona Toland will be in charge of the school in my absence. Have a great weekend. Marie Hayes, Principal Wellbeing Team It has been great to see so many students heading off to camp over the past fortnight. This is such a valuable experience for so many of our students. A very big thank you to staff who supported these camps. Respectful Relationships focus from now until the end of term is Topic 6 - Help Seeking. Examples of work in this area can be seen on student See Saw accounts. The SRC are busy planning Fathers Day Pie night which will be held at the main campus on Thursday 30th August from 6 - 7.30pm. We would love to see you there on the night. Caitriona Toland, AP Wellbeing

Specialist TeamThe past fortnight has been hectic for the Specialists. In Week 5 Specialist Teachers did Instructional rounds on Monday and Tuesday at main campus and BRC. In Week 4 MY camps were a great success, much of that due to Kacey’s organisation for both camp and students staying back at school. This week is Science week and Thursdays incursion in the Hall was organised by Michelle, Athena and Anthony Heffernan; thank you to all of them for their commitment and organisation. Just a reminder that Sportsday has been postponed until Friday 31st August.

On Wednesday 8th August some of the BRC Music Elective went to Suzanne Cory High School to be part of the audience for their dress rehearsal of ‘We Will Rock You’. The musical is made up of songs by the band ‘Queen’ and tells the story of a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same. Musical instruments and composers are forbidden and rock music is unknown. A group of Bohemians struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion and live music and are pleased when they stumble across Galileo and Scaramouche, who help them find Rock’s Holy Grail and defeat the Killer Queen. All students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Here’s what some of our students thought of the show:‘It was infinitely awesome! Because of those resistance members and the two villains, it was pretty cool.’ Alex‘It was awesome, I liked the way they planned it, they weren’t afraid, it was great!’ Hamish‘It freaked me out in the first part because it was a big stage and I wasn’t expecting that and by the end it was so good.’ Kaesarn‘It was good, I liked the end bit when all the people came out.’ Brandon‘They got the crowd involved and they had a steady beat which was amazing.’ Shannon

‘I liked everything and my favourite part was when they got the crowd to join in and I enjoyed the different performances of each song.’ Vanessa‘I liked it, I really like musicals.’ Diamond‘I liked how they involved the crowd, I loved all of it.’ Angelo‘It was amazing! The choreography, everything was just spot on. The students performing were amazing, they were better than me! I would definitely go back again’ Sabri

NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES WESTERN MELBOURNE AREA

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new, national approach providing individualised support and services for people with disability. The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

The NDIS commenced operation in some parts of the State on 1 July 2016 and will rollout progressively across the remainder of the State, Area by Area, until it is fully operational on 1 July 2019. Key information for Western Melbourne is as follows:

Area start date Local government areas Local Area Coordinator

1 October 2018 Hobsons Bay, Maribrynong, Melbourne, Moonee Valley, Wyndham

Brotherhood of St Laurence

Participants will transition to the NDIS based on where they live, not where they attend school.

Eligibility is focused on lifelong, functional impairment. NDIS eligibility information is available on the NDIS Access Checklist which is on the NDIS website.

There are two possible pathways for students with a disability to access the NDIS:

1. Students who are receiving specified disability programs or supports will have their details automatically provided to the NDIA. Your school will be able to advise you if your child is receiving one of these supports. These students may be contacted by the NDIA up to six months prior to their Area’s start date and invited to test their eligibility for the scheme.

2. Students who do not receive any of the specified programs or supports can directly contact either the NDIA or the NDIA Local Area Coordinator to test their eligibility. This can commence up to six months prior to their Area’s rollout date.

Further information Contact your NDIA Local Area Coordinator or the NDIA for information about the NDIS. Your school has also been provided with general information about the NDIS and what it means for students with disabilities.
