Principal’s Report Welcome back to another school year, and to our new families an extra special welcome. As I write the first report of the year, I am amazed that so much has already taken place. Our newest students, our Year Seven’s, are already well and truly into the business of learning and we have had the opportunity to meet their families at our annual Year Seven BBQ. Our swimming sports have been run and won, with a big congratulations to Gray House and all who competed on the day. Well done to our Age Group Champions and I wish you well at the next level of competition. Our Senior students have settled back into their work and thanks to our Headstart Program, a number of classes are already about to undergo their first School Assessed Coursework (SAC) for the year.
New Staff As with most years, 2019 sees us welcoming new staff onto the Numurkah Secondary College team and we have been very lucky to be able to secure such a capable and energetic group to our staff. Craig Burdon joins us as the Assistant Principal of the college. Craig brings with him a wealth of experience, skills and knowledge to the role with his previous job having been the Principal of Lake Cargelligo Central School in NSW. Therese Cossens will be in the Business Manager role for 2019, so please do not hesitate to contact the college for any of your school finance questions. Micah Collie and Chris Deitch join us in the English & Humanities departments. Micah had previously completed teaching experience at our college and we were very impressed with her skills, so when an opportunity arose to bring her onto the staff, we did not hesitate. Chris has come through the very prestigious Teach for Australia program pathway, of which Numurkah Secondary College has now developed a strong relationship with due to the high quality teachers that they are able to consistently deliver. Anna Price joins the Maths department, and as with Micah, a short stint from Anna in 2018 pointed to us doing what we could to extend her stay, which thankfully she has. Scott Dealy also joins us to teach Maths and Science. Scott is an alumni of the school and when he left us, as the college Dux, I hoped that following his teaching degree he would return to the college. It wasn’t a direct route, but after excelling at other schools, Scott has decided to return home. Belinda Dow also joins our team as an Education Support staff member. Belinda has had significant experience in supporting the learning of others and will work with a range of students across a range of levels within the college.

From the Assistant Principal’s Desk Week 2 has come to a close and the students have settled in very well to the 2019 school year. It has been an absolute pleasure to join the team at the college and commence a new era in my career as I work with the students of Numurkah Secondary College. Already, the outstanding reputation of the college and respectful nature of the students have shone through, with students taking time out of their lunch and recess time just to say hello and welcome me to the college. The staff of the college have already demonstrated their dedicated and hard-working natures as they endeavour to produce learning experiences to enhance the opportunities for students across the college, and provide the administration and pastoral support that makes this college great.
As I have visited classrooms, I have witnessed students engaged with their learning, enthusiastic about the experiences and opportunities afforded to them. While it is early in the year, this is a great foundation for 2019 and what is to come. With the support of parents and carers, I know that the students can sustain this enthusiasm for their learning and open many doors for their futures as they work hard to learn the best they can.
During Week 1, I had the privilege of being able to address the students in groups and discuss aspiration, dreams, goals and the need to have a plan for the future that includes back-up plans, preparations for “what-if” scenarios and plans for what comes after achieving the dream/goal. The students listened attentively, and from their body language, they “got it”. Numurkah Secondary College provided the opportunities for students to be able to achieve goals and have a contingency plan in academia. All students need to do is try their best at all times and doors will open in their futures.
As a reminder, students are required to wear full school uniform and a part of this is wearing OHS compliant plain black leather shoes with enclosed toes.
Year 12 students are well under way with their VCE and VCAL studies. Meeting attendance expectations and completing set work is vital to success in each pathway. There are a range of supports at the college for the students to ensure they stay on track to meet their goals and achieve their potential.
I look forward to working with the students and families in the days, months and years to come.
Craig Burdon, Assistant Principal
Engaged Parents Equals Engaged Learners We are very lucky to have such a supportive parent body at NSC. We know through research and through our own observations that students who have parents that are actively engaged in their child’s education do better across the board at school. You can remain engaged in your child’s education by asking what they have learnt each day and have further discussions around their responses. Attending all information sessions offered by the college, including parent-teacher interviews is a great way to keep up to speed. If you ever have any queries or concerns about any aspect of the school program or your child’s progress, don’t hesitate to contact the college. Together we are much better equipped to deal with most situations, so it is a far better option than hoping an issue will resolve on its own.
Sentral to Compass Sentral has been the learning management tool that the college has utilised to record and communicate a range of information in relation to individual students. Parents and students have been able to monitor Sentral to track data such as attendance and engagement in classes. The college has decided to transition to a new learning management system called Compass. The functionality of Compass will allow staff to better utilise a greater range of data on students and increase communication internally and with parents. Staff are currently learning about the new functionality of the program and we plan on releasing it to parents in the very near future. Unfortunately, access to Sentral has now become unavailable, so there will be a short time when this form of communication is limited. However, we encourage you to contact the school for any information that you require during this interim period.

NSC Swimming Carnival It was a sunny/humid day that made getting into the swimming pool for the annual school swimming carnival very enjoyable. Students that attended did themselves proud competing in events even if they were not keen too. House captains, in particular Zac McKeown and Teriecha Bowen did a wonderful job encouraging their house to compete in as many events as possible. This certainly paid off for the duo, their house, Gray taking the top prize of Champions on the day.
The house spirit award was taken out by Tweddle, for their amazing banners and support of each other.
The Teacher/Yr 12 race this year was taken out by the students. Not even with his Gray “war paint” on could new teacher to the school, Chris Deitch catch the Yr 12 students.

Literacy Hub News
For the month of February the Literacy Hub is covered in hearts and books covered in brown paper. The Blind Date with a Book display has students intrigued. Each book is covered in paper and displays only a line from the book, its genre and what reading level it is. It truly is a blind date and ensures students don’t judge a book by its cover. They are flying off the shelves!
We are also submitting 200 word stories (or less) with the beginning “there was love to be found in the library” to the Australia Library and Information Association. The story can be about anything! It would be great for students to get involved.
Literacy Hub lunchtime activities will resume with Manga drawing, basic Italian language and card games. Keep reading, its takes you places!

Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan.
But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.
Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.
For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that colour. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.
When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?
