Education Day Last Thursday we celebrated Education Week with a Breakfast BBQ followed by an Assembly showcasing special performances by our budding musicians, a display of projects in the Library and tree planting. It was great to see so many parents and carers visit to share the activities with us.
What time should I be at School? Many members of our staff begin their day at work quite early, preparing breakfast and classroom activities, but playground supervision begins at 8.30am each day. Students should arrive at or after 8.30am to ensure their safety. On the rare occasion that students arrive before 8.30am they should sit on the seats in the basketball area. Classes start with morning assembly at 8.55am each day except Friday when students move straight to class with assembly on Fridays at 11.30am. Please ensure your child arrives

after 8.30am to keep everyone safe! The progress of individual students is a priority for our teaching and learning programs. Many parents have spoken with class teachers at scheduled interviews earlier this year to assist in this process. Our Learning and Support Team also hold Case management Meetings with parents, carers and our school counsellor to support students in their learning. Thank you to all of those who have supported us by attending these meetings to develop plans for future action.

We had fun planting trees!
To celebrate National Tree Day families, teachers and students planted a selection of native trees in our playground. Toyota sent our school some special hats and tree guards to help us celebrate. We will help to look after them by weeding and watering the little trees. At the moment lots of classes are learning about where food comes from and have plants growing in their rooms. Some classes have sunflowers in cups, mustard seeds in egg cartons and bean seeds germinating in plastic bags taped to the window. We are also designing a vegetable garden in our playground.

Last week we featured an article about school readiness. The key areas of maturity and development are the areas of most importance for school readiness. These are the areas of social and emotional development. Here are some questions when assessing school readiness:
Can they make an independent decision and follow through on this?
Do they have ideas of their own?
Can they follow two or three instructions at the same time?
Can they move on to new activities easily?
Do they separate well from their carer/parent?
Do they show interest in other kids?
Do they interact appropriately with other children?
Can they recognize and express their feelings and needs?
Can they concentrate on a task?
How do they deal with frustration?
Reading tip When listening to your child read an easier book, try not to jump in too early and help. At times doing nothing can be more helpful than giving students words they don’t seem to know. Sometimes students need to read to the end of the sentence before they can fix up their reading, jumping in doesn’t allow your child the opportunity to work it out for themselves. It is far more valuable to give them time to work out their errors and fix up their own reading. Sometimes a prompt like
“Did that make sense, what would fit there, look at the first letter and try and work out what might make sense”, can prompt to a strategy to help them work it out. If you have to tell your child a word ask them - “Would …… make sense there. You try it and see if it makes sense and looks right.” Leave the heavy lifting to the child, but ensure reading is always fun! Mrs Makinson

On Wednesday 30th July 1-2M made cupcakes. We made cupcakes because we have been learning about procedures. Half of the class went with Mr Kenny to the staffroom and the other half stayed with Mrs Miller in the classroom. We all had a chance to mix, crack, stir, pour, measure and lick. We made 48 cupcakes and used the canteen oven to bake them all. After they had cooled we iced and decorated them, before eating them. They were DELICIOUS. This week we made some cupcake artwork using shaving foam.
