TENTATIVE PSLE DATES
• Oral Thu 15th Aug & Fri 16th Aug
• Listening Comprehension Fri 20th Sep
• Written Examination Thu 26th Sep to Wed 2nd Oct
WHAT IS PSLE?
PSLE – A Placement Examination• Need to reflect the relative achievement level of
students among their peers.
• Places students into different courses according to their academic ability.
• Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice.
TRUE OR FALSE?
T-score is out of 300.
English and Mother Tongue are more important than
Mathematics and Science.
I can calculate the T-score of my child
by adding all the marks of 4 subjects,
divide by 4 and multiply by 3.
WHAT IS PSLE AGGREGATE SCORE?
It is a sum of the T-score of the 4 subjects. It allows students to be ranked fairly.
RAW SCORES ARE NOT USED BECAUSE…
• Raw scores obtained in the exam only show how good the student is for that particular subject and exam, not how good the student is as compared to other students.
• Different subjects have different levels of difficulty
• Different subjects have different spread of marks from the average mark (i.e. different standard deviation)
MT
MT Ave
= 80
Her performance in
MT is very close to
that of other
students.
EL
EL Ave
= 60
Wendy scores 85% in both EL and MT.
85%She did
much
better in
EL as
compared
to other
students.
(Wendy’s score )
THEREFORE THERE IS A NEED FOR STANDARDISATION OF THE RAW SCORES
Transformed Score
or T-Score
CONVERTING RAW SCORE TO T-SCORET-Score MT
85% Average: 80%
EL
85%
Average:60%
50
T-score converts average marks of each subject to a common score of 50 points. It also converts other marks taking into consideration the extent to which they differ from the average.
HOW IS T-SCORE CALCULATEDFOR EACH SUBJECT?
where
X : student’s mark for the subject
Y : average mark (mean) scored by all students
Z : spread of marks around the average mark
(standard deviation)
Z
Y)(X1050T
EXAMPLE:
• Student’s mark (X) in exam = 80
• Average mark (Y) scored by all students = 68
• Spread of marks (Z) around the average mark = 14
57.5814
)6880(1050T
WHAT IS T-SCORE?
• It is not the mark a student obtains in the examination.
• It gives the relative position of a student’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other students in that subject.
• For example, a student who scored 70% in Science would not have performed as well if most other students scored higher than 70%.
HOW IS THE AGGREGATE SCORE CALCULATED?
• By adding the T-scores of the 4 subjects.
Every subject is equally important!
• Use of marks obtained in the examination can lead to a wrong ranking of students.
• To ensure that subjects are accorded equalweighting.
• Helps to place students in the Secondary Schools and the Secondary School Course more fairly.
T-SCORE IS USED INSTEAD OF THE RAW MARKS OBTAINED BECAUSE…
• Student’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0
• Average mark (Y) scored by all students = 68.0
• Spread of marks (Z) around the average mark (Y) = 14.0
Example:
T = 50 + 10 (50 - 68.0)
14.0= 37.14
Example:
Subject Total Mark T-Score
EL 200 105 34
CL 200 152 51
Maths 100 67 53
Science 100 58 47
Aggregate: 185
T-score is out of 300.

I can calculate the T-score of my child by

A new DSA-Sec Application Portal
• To encourage students to tap on the expanded DSA opportunities, the DSA-Sec application process will be simplified
• From the 2019 DSA-Sec, students will be able to apply for DSA through a centralised DSA-Sec Application Portal, using a common application form.
• The portal will simplify and streamline the DSA application process, making it convenient for all students.
NEW – DSA-SEC APPLICATION PORTAL
WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR 2019 DSA-SEC?
8 May - 4 June(4 weeks)
Apply for DSA-Sec through DSA-Sec Application Portal.

FEATURES OF THE DSA-SEC PORTAL
1. CENTRALISED ONLINE APPLICATIONSApplications will be centralised across all participating secondary schoolsThe form will be easy to fill – you only have to key in contact details and your school and talent choices
Optional: The portal will also allow you to indicate any non-school-based achievements and activities related to the talent areas you applied for.
You do not need to submit testimonials or hardcopy documents to the secondary school during application.
2. Application using SingpassParents can access the Portal via their SingPass login. Only one parent’s SingPass login is required.Parents who are unable to access their SingPass can approach the primary school for assistance.
3. No application feesNo fees charged for DSA-Sec application and selection. We encourage all students who are passionate about and committed to developing particular talents to apply, regardless of family backgrounds.
38
NEW – DSA-SEC APPLICATION PORTAL
4. MAKING CHOICES IN THE DSA-SEC PORTAL
Through the portal, you can easily identify schools that offer programmes for your child’s talent area.
You can indicate up to three choices. For each choice, you will need to choose a secondary school and a talent area from that school.
The order of the choices does not matter during application.
Of the three choices, up to two choices may be used to apply to the same school, for two different talent areas of that school. This is to cater to your child’s multiple interests, and allow your child to choose different schools which can develop his/her strengths and interests.
You and your child are encouraged to consider your choices carefully, and manage the time and effort participating in multiple trials and interviews.
39
FEATURES OF THE DSA-SEC PORTAL
Note. Students can apply separately to School of the Arts and Singapore Sports School, on top of the DSA-Sec choices made through the DSA-Sec Portal.

WHAT ARE SCHOOLS LOOKING FOR?
DSA-SEC SELECTION
• Schools have updated their selection practices, which are based ona common set of student-centric principles, with more emphasis onlooking for sound fundamentals and potential in particular talentareas.
• The DSA-Sec selection process remains objective and talent-specific.
41
WHAT ARE SCHOOLS LOOKING FOR? DSA-SEC SELECTION
Talent, passion, commitment
• Schools may look at achievements and participation (e.g. in Junior Sports Academy).
• Schools may also conduct tests, trials or selection camps to identify students with strengths, or sound fundamentals and potential, in particular areas.
Strong personal qualities
• Schools may look at CCA records and VIA participation.
• Schools may also conduct interviews.
Good academic fit
• Schools may look at primary school results to ensure students can benefit from the school’s pace of learning.
Students, be sincere, be genuine, and be yourself –if you are a good fit for the school, it will show.
• The selection process differs across schools, and across different DSA-Sec categories.• Generally, schools are looking for candidates with:
42
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE DSA-SEC OUTCOMES?
Confirmed Offer (CO) Your child has a place reserved in the school, as long as his/her PSLE results qualify him/her for a course the school offers (i.e. Express,
Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical)).
Wait List (WL) Your child will be given a place in the school if other students with Confirmed Offers do not take up those offers, and if his/her PSLE results
qualify him/her for a course the school offers. Allocation will be based on students’ rank on the school’s Wait List.
Unsuccessful Your child has not been given a place in the school. If your child still wishes to enter the schools he/she applied for, he/she can apply through
the S1 Posting process using his/her PSLE results.
43
SELECTION OUTCOME
HOW ARE DSA-SEC PLACES ALLOCATED?
44
SELECTION OUTCOME
EXAMPLE: CONFIRMED OFFER VS WAIT LIST
HANI IS GIVEN CONFIRMED OFFER BY COURAGE SECONDARY. HANI SELECTED COURAGESECONDARY AS HER 2ND CHOICE.
VICTOR IS OFFERED A WAIT LIST BY COURAGE SECONDARY. VICTOR SELECTED COURAGESECONDARY AS HIS 1ST CHOICE.
WHO WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR A PLACE IN COURAGE SECONDARY FIRST?
HANI WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR A DSA-SEC PLACE IN COURAGE SECONDARY BEFORE VICTOR,AS SHE HAS A CONFIRMED OFFER.
IF MY CHILD HAS A DSA-SEC CONFIRMED OFFER, DOES IT MEAN THAT HIS/HER PSLE RESULTS WILL NOT MATTER?
YOUR CHILD’S PSLE RESULTS WILL STILL BE USED TO DETERMINE THE SECONDARY SCHOOL COURSE HE/SHE IS ELIGIBLE FOR (I.E. EXPRESS, NORMAL (ACADEMIC), NORMAL (TECHNICAL))
EVEN IF HE/SHE HAS A CONFIRMED OFFER, HE/SHE MUST QUALIFY FOR A COURSE OFFERED BY THE SCHOOL TO BE ADMITTED TO THE DSA-SEC SCHOOL.
45
SELECTION OUTCOME
Example: Leo has a Confirmed Offer from Courage Secondary, which offers the Express Course only. However, Leo’s PSLE results qualify him for the Normal (Academic) course. Hence, Leo will notbe able to go to Courage Secondary through DSA-Sec. If he is not allocated a place in another DSA-Sec school whose CO/WL offer he had accepted at the School Preference stage, he will participate in the S1 Posting.
46
Where can I find more information on the 2019 DSA-Sec?• Check the MOE DSA-Sec website for important dates and timelines,

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A SEC SCHOOL
• Compatibility of child’s academic performance with schools
-Parents may want to opt for schools that take in students who have a similar academic ability to that of their child’s.
-Refer to previous year posting aggregate ranges of the school and cut-off points
• Shows which schools are popular
• Varies from year to year
• Ensure your 6 choices in your S1 option cover a spread of PSLE aggregate scores
• Affiliation
-Bukit Panjang Primary is NOT affiliated to Bukit PanjangGovernment High or other secondary schools. No priority for admission.
• Special programmes/schemes
-Some secondary schools offer special programmes/schemes, e.g. Music Elective Programme, Art Elective Programme. If your child is interested in any such programmes, include schools that offer these programmes in your application.
[ Refer to the “Secondary School Education” booklet for more information on these programmes/schemes]
• Special Assistance Plan (SAP) Schools
-SAP schools nurture students to be proficient in both English Language (EL) and Chinese Language (CL), and to have a good understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture. Students who have taken both EL and CL at the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) may opt for SAP schools during the S1 posting exercise, and they may be posted to these schools if they meet the school’s cut-off PSLE aggregate.
